  1. Thanks! Yes, a shame to cover them up, but tablet stands, phone stands...are popular requests that aren't likely to go away any time soon. I'm not looking to go into business, but side-item sales don't hurt either! For now, I'm just learning and having a great time...
  2. Given the collection of extreme talent located on this site, I have been hesitant to post any photos of the work I've done. I'm not selling anything (yet), but I have done a special request at cost. Many of the people (friends) that have asked for something, asked for tablet-stands...such is the case here. This is a tablet stand built for a friend of the family. It is made out of 1/2-inch Walnut and backed with 1/4-inch Padauk. The pattern is a modified version of one on Steve Good's site. I hope you enjoy!
  3. Welcome!
  4. Welcome to the group!
  5. I recently went to Harbor Freight and purchased an inexpensive on/off pedal. I didn't like the idea of having to keep my foot on the gas and I don't need another object on the floor to trip over. The way I have my workbench set up, I was able to fasten the pedal to one of the support beams so I can "bump" it with my knee. This kept it close, but out of my way.
  6. Welcome to the village Charles! I started scrolling with a Craftsman model. They are basically an "into" unit at low cost. I'm happy I started with it, but after working on some more detailed projects, and after reading MANY articles...I decided to upgrade to a Dewalt DW788 model. I felt that it had the things I wanted for the price I was willing to pay. Other than having some re-learning stumbles, I LOVE it. As far as blades go, I prefer the Flying Dutchman brand, but may soon try Pegasus blades. Happy scrolling!
  7. They look amazing! Great work. It would have taken me longer than 2 hours... As far as finish, I prefer natural wood...no paint for me. I prefer danish oil to bring out the grain and because application is pretty simple. For lighter color woods, it can discolor them a little so be sure to test! If you like the Red Mahogany stain, then by all means...use it! I'm sure they'll turn out stunning!
  8. Welcome to the group! Hope you don't have any issues with your new Dewalt! Mine is giving me a fit right now...
  9. All of these great posts are why I joined this community! Thank you all so much!
  10. Great information! Thanks!
  11. Thanks for info! I'll be sure to look into the book you referenced.
  12. I too use a progression of grits as needed. If the project I am working on is fairly smooth and blemish-free to begin with, I start with 220 then 320, and finally 400. Otherwise I start with a lower grit. As I'm sure you already know, the wood type is a big consideration too.
  13. I'd never heard this one before so I thought I'd ask. Recently I was told that if I use 320-400 grit sandpaper to finish my project prior to oiling or staining that the treatment would adhere to the wood as well. According to this individual, I'm supposed to apply my finish after using a lower grit paper, like 220. Does this make sense to anyone? I typically use multiple treatments of danish oil, so I'd think I'd want to have it fully sanded to a nice finish before application. Thoughts?
  14. Thanks Bill. I believe I saw the "vice" in a video of his once but had forgotten about it.
  15. Stunning piece of work! I like to use Danish Oil as well. I just bought the Watco Wipe-On Poly & haven't used it yet. Again, beautiful work!
  16. Welcome Mike! Glad to have you
  17. Thanks for sharing & prayers for Asher & family..
  18. Great advice from everyone & much appreciated. Thanks!
  19. I have a wooden vice but haven't tried it yet. I usually just use packing tape to hold the sections together...
  20. Perhaps I'm overly ambitious, but I recently started scrolling chess pieces. I've finished 4 pieces so far with mixed results (some flawed more than others). I'm cutting 1-1/2 inch Aspen for one side and Walnut for the other. I'm using FDSR #5 thinking that it will make some of the turns easier, but may bump up to a #7 to see what happens. Any suggestions other than time & patience? Thanks
  21. Thanks! I made a couple of bowls out of 1/2 inch poplar since I can get it easy from Lowes. I'll keep the patterns in mind if I need any.
  22. Everyone seems so eager to see everyone else's work...not sure I have the "guts" to share any of mine. I've mainly used Google to print off silhouettes or outlines to use as patterns. Some I've downloaded from Steve Good's site. All of my work have been gifts to family and friends, so I don't get complaints / critiques from those who get something for nothing...
  23. I've called...message service was "down". I've emailed...never received a response. The ONLY method I've found successful is to use Facebook Messenger. Within an hour, I received communication.
