  1. Wow, that's a BIG board that guy is trying to straighten out. Mine are just small, so maybe this will work on mine, too. It's green poplar that is doing the bowing. And I received a big piece of purple heart that was already bowed when it arrived. That kinda made me sad, I really wanted that one to be a good piece.
  2. I just got some nice woods from Heritage and I noticed that a few of the pieces are starting to bow. They are not really thick and they were flat when they arrived. There's been a lot of humidity and rain here and I guess that is what is affecting some of the boards. I've put them under other wood and heavy items to try to flatten them out, but I don't know if that will work or not. They're inside the house, not outside or in a shed or anything like that. Any ideas? I'm saving this wood until I'm sure I won't butcher it.

    Hello!

Thanks for the video tip. I'm still exploring. I did a Teddy that my husband was pretty impressed with, today. I'm making a second one, mirror image. I put all the things I have made on the table and there's a marked improvement already. Maybe there's hope for me after all! I'm still getting set up. Tomorrow we're going to put the scroll saw on an angle to make it more comfortable, right now I'm sawing standing up, I'd rather be sitting so I can saw longer. Also, the sanders are still in boxes, everything has been hand sanded so far. I believe it when you say you never stop learning. I just got some books with patterns today. This is getting more and more exciting! I'm lovin it!
  4. I'm glad this was asked and answered. I've been cutting out backing for a couple of projects from luan. Great advice!
  5. I'm trying not to spend a fortune on my scroll saw hobby until I get really good at it, so rather than buy a bunch of different stains I grabbed a pack of these at Amazon. There's 5 colors and only about 17.00. A smidgen goes a long way. Right now, I'm sawing pine and plywood until I trust myself to use the good wood I ordered from Heritage. So if anyone wants to save some money starting out and get some variety at the same time, this is a good way to do it. I did a Teddy, segmented and used the brown to stain the body, left the feet bottoms and ear insides natural pine, then used the blue on a scarf he's wearing. Sorry, still no pics because I have to figure out my tablet still and I'm more interested in learning to saw. LOL Here's a link in case anyone wants to try it. https://www.amazon.com/Wood-Dye-Aniline-Color-Stain/dp/B00BAKWTMQ/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=3S4OZ6TNBEP8Y&keywords=keda+wood+dye&qid=1579213718&s=hi&sprefix=keda+%2Ctools%2C165&sr=1-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFXNDRDWU9JQjZYViZlbmNyeXB0ZWRJZD1BMDQ3MTg0NzNWWlNHTjk1OU1JWVEmZW5jcnlwdGVkQWRJZD1BMDgwOTQ2MUxQUVU3SzZRMDdWSyZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

    Hello!

    Nice! Thank you!
  7. I just got back from Harbor Fr. with the mag/light. I put it on the table and I really like it. The cap is working ok on it, I'll leave it on for now. Thanks for all the help, everyone!
  8. When I bought the saw I got him a 3" compact cut off tool. When I bought the sanders he said, oh, it's good to have all these tools. lol
  9. BTW, this is the one hobby that my husband is all for, more power tools!
  10. I've got an led light and magnifying glasses on a headband, they work really well but the nose thing hurts. I'm going to Harbor Freight tomorrow and pick up their lamp/magnifier.
  11. Good, now that makes 2 of us. ha I just sawed my teddy's head square on one side.
  12. It looks good, I think that's the one I'm going to get.
  13. That seems awfully harsh. And I'm not sure if I believe that story or not. I used to own a trademark, principle, not service mark. The law is that if you do not defend it, you can lose it, if the USPTO finds out about it. So, there were a bunch of competitors who decided it would be profitable to use my mark. I sent them cease and desist letters myself. And they did. And I didn't sue anyone. My lawyer said to defend it would cost a minimum of 20K and the venue had to be where the person lived that infringed. Coca Cola got after a bunch of gel candlemakers for using their glasses at one point, but they just told them to stop and no one got sued by them. Usually people just want you to stop doing it. Suing some small time person like that is ridiculous, but if they win, they could ruin someone financially. Hope it's not true.
  14. I love the pumpkins! Welcome to you.

    Hello!

You all would laugh so hard if I showed you some of these things.

    Hello!

Thanks, Fran. I'm not afraid of it anymore. I took off the foot because it was getting in the way too much. It's a lot more fun now than the first day I got the saw.
  17. I think I am the only person alive who has no cell phone. I have tablets, but I need to figure out how to get a picture to post online with them.
  18. Yep, I ditched that thing already.
  19. Thanks! I am near a window, right beside one and it's really big. I didn't even think about starting a fire with it.
  20. So far I've made a segmented butterfly, a segmented whale, a leaf trivet and a basket. They're not that great. I sure hope I get better at this. Right now I'm working on an intarsia butterfly. I used shelf paper and adhesive, but some of the pattern pieces starting coming off while I was sawing. Needless to say, that didn't help matters any. I still don't have my sanders put together and working, so all I have made so far have been hand sanded. I've got a ton of learning curves all at once, so it feels like I have 10 thumbs.
  21. Howdy! I am looking for one of those lights with the magnifying glass with an arm on it, but I don't know where to get a good one. I've read reviews on some of them on Amazon and they're mixed. Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

    Hello!

LOL That cat is so funny! I found that on a free avatar site, but I do have a cute little Persian female. I love that breed, so docile and don't climb the curtains.

    Hello!

I'm still collecting things for my sawing adventures. Today I got some nifty little magnifying glasses with led lights that fit with an elastic headband. Surprisingly, they work pretty good! And tung oil, glue, spray adhesive, contact paper, more blades. I think I'm going to try and make a bowl or a basket next, gives good practice for cutting the same lines over and over.

    Hello!

Thanks everyone for the nice welcome posts and the reassurances about saw fears. lol I don't know anyone who uses a scroll saw, personally.

    Hello!

Thank you Gordster! I'm having a blast looking at everyone's work and all the patterns on this site. Some really beautiful work. I'm partial to intarsia, I love the way it looks.
