  1. Wow, that's perfect enough for me... I guess being 70 and just learning I'm trying to accomplish too much, too fast.. While I'm still kicking
  2. I use those project panels all the time. Only using the BB plywood for scroll sawing.
  3. Never tried a spiral blade before. I just cut some pine to make this people/animal thingy and the wood was a bear to cut through and it was the first time I tried a #7 10TPI 7R and it got the job done chopping through pine but it ended up still being smooth. Three weeks into this hobby and I guess I'm too critical of what I do.
  4. I've been mostly working with 1/4 Baltic birch plywood. I use good lighting and use a magnifer. Drilling entry holes, not using any blades past 3 or 4 and moving at a snail's pace. I understand it takes time but that's why my question was geared to the long time scrollers with many years of practice to answer if their current work, close up has flaws. I don't see close up shots of intricate work posted often.
  5. Being new to woodworking, especially with less than three weeks experience with scroll sawing my projects look okay if you don't examine too closely. I liked using my band saw to make things but even though it cut smooth it lacked the ability to make tight curves. Using the scroll saw makes the tight turns but my straight lines aren't straight and my curves are choppy. I end up spending a lot of time sanding things to fix the flaws. I'm sure over time (if I live that long) I will improve. Was in Hobby lobby last week and saw some small intricate cut items priced at less than two bucks that would have taken me forever to make. Not to mention a home laser is darn near perfect. To the seasoned scrollers: Do your projects pass the close up look test or am I expecting too much?
  6. I just placed an order for some Baltic birch panels from Ocooch Hardwoods just now and the prices were really good. We'll see how it goes! Thanks to everyone for the helpful replies!
  7. The prices at Ooch woods look crazy affordable. Sometimes it all comes down to who fills the order for quality control. I really hate to keep returning things. Is the quality always consistent?
  8. Haven't tried any others yet. They are all great until they aren't. If there's a 10% chance of getting a dud, I'm usually in that group, just the way it's always been... Maybe I'll get lucky on the next online order from one of the recommendations here.
  9. Took another shot at ordering some 1/4 Baltic birch plywood. It "looked" fine at first glance but after the pattern was applied and 40 some holes drilled it turned out to be a chip out mess. The thickness was NOT 1/4 and the outer veneers were paper thin. After trying every fancy blade I own it was not meant to be. Tear out was horrible on both sides. That crap is on it's way back. This part of my woodworking experience has been very challenging. I don't mind paying a premium price if I'm getting value!
  10. It's a Steve Good free pattern on his website.. It has a male (walt) and female (Dee) figures.
  11. It's sad Dewalt customers have to purchase or make essential items for their products...
  12. Finally got around to making "Walt" to lend his helping hands!
  13. I hear ya about what happens when you go faster. I get on a roll feeding and turning and all is right with the world, until it isn't. Gotta work on my speed and steering a bunch more!
  14. Even though I have good seating and posture, if I sit for more than a few hours my OLD back let's me know that's too long. I worked a few hours on "Missed Opportunities" another Steve Good design yesterday and a few today to finish it. I'm quite sure seasoned scrollers could have knocked it out in half the time but hopefully I will get faster as I keep practicing. At least I haven't ruined anything "yet"
  15. Greetings Darryl I started woodworking a little late in life trying to figure out what area I like the best. I'm starting to get the hang of scrolling and haven't messed anything up yet but I work at a snail's pace until I build more experience. I have proper seating and posture but my old back pays the price if I sit for too long.
  16. Luckily Home Depot and Lowe's are good about taking online orders back at their retail locations. Replaced two table saws, a bench and spindle sander without any hassle. Although I don't like spending big money on tools, I've decided it's not worth the time and agravation trying to work with inferior ones. My last two purchases were Dewalt and super happy with the quality and ease of use. I worked in retail management for "many" years and today's so called customer service is pathetic!
  17. The retail store didn't have very much plywood and what they had was rough looking. I thought ordering through Amazon I wouldn't have any problems doing a return but I just didn't see that fine print about the drawbacks dealing with third party sales. Amazon was no help since they just collect your money. Trying to learn how to use my new scroll saw and things like this are not helping me want to pursue it. Live and learn..
  18. I started to file a dispute with my bank but the procedure and paperwork involved was just too much B S to add more insult to injury. I don't do Facebook but I did write a few reviews. Since it was through Amazon I have a shipping label to print. Basically I could return the wood and (Subject to their approval) they MIGHT issue a refund LESS shipping costs... I'm tempted to save up some trinkets from my 3 dogs and ship THAT in the box with their prepaid label. I'd still be out $50 but a few pounds of turds would make a statement
  19. So I started looking through the 9 pieces of Baltic birch plywood (scroll saw package) I received from Woodcraft and was upset to find warped pieces, some you couldn't tell which was supposed to be the "good" side and a few that had sanding pigtails on the surface. ? $13.99 shipping to get it and they want another $13.99 to ship it back. The retail store wouldn't take it back either. So I'n now the owner of a $50 box of firewood. Should have known better to buy wood online..................................
  20. Band saw...
  21. Being a brand new scroller, I'm slowly learning and wondered if I wasted money buying Woodcraft's 9 pc scroll saw pack? 2 1/8" 2 1/4" 1 3/8" 1 1/2" all 12x12 I've only tried using 1/4" before and wondered what the other sizes could actually be used for... 1/8" seems pretty thin. Sorry for all of the questions but this place seems to be the right place to ask them. Let me know when I'm being a pest!
  22. Had one for about two days, didn't like it. Light weight vibrated too much and hard to install blades. I have a few Wen tools but all have been swapped a few times to finally get one that actually went through quality control. Glad I purchased the Dewalt and now I feel there's hope if learning something. I buy the bargain tools and almost always regret it. Went through 3 brands of table saws and ended up with Dewalt. Buy the best tool you can afford...
  23. I have so much to learn and I'm not getting any younger... Decided to print out that practice pattern with all of the scrolling examples to try but it was boring... So I decided to test out the different blades I have on another SG pattern Even if I screw it up it's still more fun with the pattern. Tested it on 1/4" BB plywood with the pattern spray glued on clear shelf paper and got a feel for the different brands and styles of blades. It still turned out okay as long as you don't look too close.
  24. Since I retired last year I decided to turn my one car garage into a little wood working hobby shop. Been trying many different things to find an area that would be the most and "safest" to learn. The addition of the scroll saw last week is something that I really want to dive into. I'm sure I can gather much useful information here.
  25. Just bought a Dewalt DW788 scroll saw. Been trying to learn woodworking since I retired last year. Was kinda proud of my first attempt.
