When you open the programm there is a sheet in the middle of your screen.

When you make something in Inkscape you should place it on that sheet.

You can work anywhere you want but your design should be placed on this sheet befor you canb print it.

I think that is what went wrong.

 

I hope you understand my explanation. When it is not completely clear I'm certain that someone else can help you further.

Rich as the scrolkler said. the "Pallette"  which is the white "paper" you see on opening is the only printable area of the desktop. If your design is not on that pallette when you send it to printer it will not print.
