amazingkevin Posted September 7, 2015 Report Posted September 7, 2015 The landlady got connected to the sewer system recently.I'm still smelling ,like car exhaust in the garage converted efficiency. What I'm thinking is either the kitchen sink, bathroom sink or the shower drain does not have a trap in line or all three of them because of the conversion .Would anybody know if theses fumes are harmful to me .I've been smelling it for two years .I never have an open flame in here thank God. I've been complaining for a year anyway. Quote
LarryEA Posted September 7, 2015 Report Posted September 7, 2015 As long as you're still taking in oxygen, yer OK. Quote
Falcon Posted September 7, 2015 Report Posted September 7, 2015 That is probably why you can finish so many great projects! Methane High, lol  MetalScroll 1 Quote
bandaideman Posted September 7, 2015 Report Posted September 7, 2015 I'm not sure but probably will be OK but I would lay off the beans so the Methane level doesn't go up too high. I would think the vent for the system is not working or is in wrong but I am not a plumber. LarryEA 1 Quote

From what i know about the drains here ,you can here noises like water draining a long way away in the shower floor drain and the bathroom sink drain.I've been plagued with palmetto bugs since i moved here .nothing would get rid of them .and i good about not making crumbs for them to live on. Ill bet they were making their way from the septic tank through the dry pipe to my place with no trap???Come to think of it there is no roof vent tube on my side of the house above the kitchen or bathroom. So i think your on to the problem 10 fold! Thanks .    Quote

dgman Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 The Co. I work for provides a service just for that problem. We do electronic leak detection. We find plumbing leaks in concrete slabs. We also find leaks in gas lines, sewer lines and pool and spas. We have a machine that pumps smoke into the sewer system. This will reveal where the sewer gas is coming from. Contact your local Leak Detection Co. amazingkevin 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 (edited) I have a shower that does that once and while. I know it has a trap, because I built the house. I pour a little vinegar and baking soda down the train when it happens ( about twice a year) and it eliminates the odor. Maybe pour a 1/2 cup vinegar and a couple table spoons down the drains and see if it helps. The baking soda will fizz when you pour it in. At least something to try. I don't know if the odor will hurt you but it is very unpleasant at the least. If it continues I would be all over the landlord to fix it like "stink on #$%@" if you know what I mean. In my part of the country a trap is required, no if ands or butts! Edited September 8, 2015 by Scrappile Quote

kywoodmaster Posted September 8, 2015 Report Posted September 8, 2015 Kevin: If this was a garage I would be more inclined to think there was an old floor drain that has a dry trap on it. Look for a low place in the floor sort of like a bowl indention in the carpet and see if that is where the smell is comming from. If it is you can probably split the carpet and put a hose in the drain to refill the trap. The constant breathing of Methane can cause shortness of breath, headaches and dizziesness. It is not deadly but can have a bad effect on someone with health issues. amazingkevin 1 Quote

How cool is that. What will they think of next.I cant open any windows as i have 2" x 4" shelve all around my room with all my treasures i've accumulated since 1986.And i can't leave the door open at all as the bug situation outside is very bad.I don't know if they are fruit fly's or what but my 4 fly strips are loaded to the gills with them hanging from the ceiling. So i can't even air the place out.Always something Quote

Thanks ,the shower is raised off the floor 8''the toliet plumbing is under ground and behind a wall.My room is 8" lower than the rest of the house,That alone makes me wonder how they made the water go up hill to the back yard where the septic tank was that recently got crushed and filled when the sewer was connected.?
