breadstick Posted March 19, 2016 Report Posted March 19, 2016 Finished this for a friend a few days ago. Made the frame to go with it. 1/4" birch ply with luan backer. Cut with #3 Olson spirals. Not happy with the luan backer. Stained with ebony and it just made it darker, not black. amazingkevin, lawson56 and Lucky2 3 Quote

penquin Posted March 20, 2016 Report Posted March 20, 2016 Great looking cut, pattern looks like a Charlies Dearing pattern if I am wrong and it is your own design that is great. Frame and background are outstanding. jim penquin Quote
FranMike Harley Posted March 20, 2016 Report Posted March 20, 2016 Awesome job, Nathan. Looks like you got those spirals figured out ! Thanks for sharing. Quote
ike Posted March 20, 2016 Report Posted March 20, 2016 Very good cutting I agree with you on the backer board. Quote
breadstick Posted March 20, 2016 Author Report Posted March 20, 2016 Thank you everyone. I should have said in the beginning but yes, it is a Charles Dearing pattern. His stupid sale right now is draining my pockets. Sometime soon I'll be making the R2D2 pattern I bought from him and, if he's still selling it, buy the C3PO pattern, too. I really don't like Star Wars, but my wife is a lifelong fan. Also, I should have put a second coat of ebony stain on the backer. I like it the way it is, but I think it'd look better darker. On more intricate pieces with larger cutouts like this, I like doing an ebony stain on birch plywood backer. It looks a little more put together than foam board or felt, even though I still like using both. DeenaKay 1 Quote
wombatie Posted March 21, 2016 Report Posted March 21, 2016 That looks amazing. You did a fantastic job cutting it. Now I am off to Charlie's site to see about the R2D2 and CP3O patterns, Bye Marg Quote

Now I know what to do with my tax refund if I get one. jim Quote
