heppnerguy Posted October 23, 2016 Report Posted October 23, 2016 I am posting this on my IPhone so I hope the photo posts correctly instead of sideways. I took a Charles Deering pattern then made an effort to dress it up with an easy frame and some other simple Halloween icons, along with an orange painted frame in an effort to add some fun to the end product. Did I do that or should I just made a rather plane frame and let the pattern speak for itself. Dick heppnerguy lawson56, Scrolling Steve, Lucky2 and 2 others 5 Quote
dgman Posted October 23, 2016 Report Posted October 23, 2016 Nice cutting Dick! I think the frame is ok, but I don't like the red glittery eyes. Quote
Ron Johnson Posted October 23, 2016 Report Posted October 23, 2016 Photo is posted incorrect... No it's right Dick ... Lol. My preference would be a plain frame. Otherwise I like very much. Well done. Quote

heppnerguy Posted October 23, 2016 Author Report Posted October 23, 2016 Interesting how differences are liked by people. I asked my wife about maybe doing the glittery eyes and she liked that idea,so I made it that way. After I finished it, I ask her if she thought the eyes being black would be better, she liked the glittery eyes. The frame is also a matter of taste. I guess when someone is selling them, they should make variations so there is a choice for different likes, even if it is not your own preference. I guess that is the reason things like cars are painted in so many different colors. What one buys, another dislikes. It's learning process, for me Dick heppnerguy Quote
rjR Posted October 23, 2016 Report Posted October 23, 2016 I like it EXCEPT for the eyes! Very well cut and neat on the icons too! Again; my opinion and a lot of others are not the same. Make a few variations for your sale page! What sells this year may be the better design. Nut, I know that what is appreciated one time may be thought differently about in the future! Kind of like east coast humor and west coast humor are sometimes a lot farther than 3000 miles apart, too. heppnerguy 1 Quote
Fab4 Posted October 23, 2016 Report Posted October 23, 2016 Hi Dick: If the wife likes it, who are we to argue...........lol My thoughts on this for what it's worth The frame by itself is cool A darker orange would make it look better Looks more on the "peachy" color side I would have glittered the whole backer, not just the eyes Not really sure if the cutting (which is well done by the way) goes with this frame. BTW, I drive a Dodge Ram.......rusty grey Fab4 P.S. Someone, somewhere out there will like this very much the way it is heppnerguy 1 Quote
lawson56 Posted October 23, 2016 Report Posted October 23, 2016 Awesome Dick,Red Eye would have been perfect,Just not to keen on the glitter.Love the Frame. The Skull is So Cool. Lucky2 1 Quote
Dave Monk Posted October 23, 2016 Report Posted October 23, 2016 Nice job Dick. I am sure not one to judge. Lots of time what I think is cool doesn't sell and the thing I think is nothing special is sold right away. dave heppnerguy 1 Quote

Lucky2 Posted October 24, 2016 Report Posted October 24, 2016 Dick, it's a good looking cutting, There is a couple of things I would change if it was me. The red eyes are fine, but, I don't like the glitter eyes. I like the orange frame, but, I think it is just a bit to small. Len Quote

I always enjoy seeing your posts because I know I can always see an honest suggestion or comment. Not just the usual,'nice job,'that is to encourage every piece posted. I don't believe anyone wants to be belittled and criticized but honest suggestive citicism should be taken for what it is. That is what I like about you and your critical and suggested comments. wombatie Posted October 24, 2016 Report Posted October 24, 2016 I don't particularly like the orange frame but don't mind the eyes. We are all different. Great cutting though Dick. Marg Quote

Marg Marg, I thought the orange frame was good because it is a Halloween color, it seems. However, I was not happy with the lightness of the paint color but it was all I had. I did get in rather a hurry as i put on the final parts and even though I am trying to take more pride in my finishing of my pieces, I reverted to my old ways that I am trying to change. The frame was from a piece of ply i had laying around and was really too small for the cutting, but because of my rush finish, I decided to use it anyway, So most all of the comments of suggestive criticism is right on line as to what my final thoughts of this piece were also. I was attempting to make it a little more interesting but I know that rushing my project turned it all around for me too Dick heppnerguy Quote

meflick Posted October 25, 2016 Report Posted October 25, 2016 Dick, as you say - its only by trying new things and pushing our personal "envelopes" do we find new and different ways of doing things which leads to creative outlets that might not have been found without doing it. Good to see you are walking the walk. I need to push myself to do more of that. Great looking project overall. As you can see here - what one person likes - another may or may not. Glitter is one of those things over the years that I have learned some people love - others not so much. My daughter was never a "glitz and glam" girl so I quickly learned never to make her anything that glittered. Two nieces are big "glitz and glam" girls and the more it glitters the better they like it. Most men I have found don't like the glitter which I think is shown by the comments here. I like the orange "halloween" theme that you were going for but think it may not look as good with the red glitter and as you and others have concluded, perhaps some of the issue is that the frame may be a little too small. I am not sure if I like the additions onto the edges of the frame or not. To me, they seem to distract some from the actual cutting its self the skull. One idea might be to cut them into the wood frame and then add some black behind them that way. In my eye at least, they would then not "pop" so much off the frame but be an enhancement to the frame. But, as others have noted - what appeals to one - may not to the masses so if I were creating to sell, I would try several different versions and see which one was the better seller. However, again - that can vary depending upon the "audience" where you are - switch venues and that too can change. Thanks for sharing. Quote
