My wife and I are considering a move to NC to be closer to the kids. I just wondered if anyone has had experience moving what you feel is the a good way to move. I have moved 4-5 times over the years but it was always a military move. Go to transportation they set up the packing and moving day and delivery day. Now this will be my first long move if it happens. I have moved across town and rented a uhaul type trunk. I have looked at Pods and other companies of this type, of course the moving Vans are available but  cost may be a issue.  Anyone with experience or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I tend to like to have ducks in a row before big ventures so all information is good. I had one lady who had a mover and when they should up to deliver the driver wanted another 2-3 hundred dollars or he wouldn't unload if. There are always those who take advantage. Thank you

A friend did the PODS deal since he had to store his stuff for about six weeks between dwellings and my only advise is make double sure they service BOTH zip codes and get it in writing.

Another option that is become more available is the freight companies (like ABF and R&L) will park a pup trailer in your driveway for you to load and then they take it to the new location. Going on your locations, either of those services is available here in Indiana--just have to check about North Carolina.

We moved into a condo several years ago.  Used a POD and had no complaints.  You can rent thick blankets from them and you must buy your own padlock.  Unloaded on a Saturday and a neighbor complained (what's new?) that it took up 3 parking places and they didn't work on Sunday to get the empty.  They were friendly people to work with.

We moved from Mi to Tn several years ago. Decided to move ourselves, rented the largest truck available. This was a couple of months after replacement knee surgery so I couldn't do much. We "hired" helpers on both ends and drove ourselves. It went very smoothly, only thing damaged was a cheap cart that rolled off the end of the truck while we were unloading. Used several blankets, cardboard etc to protect. Biggest issue is packing. If you know how to arrange tight packing it goes well.

If you have made the decision to move, then sell everything you've got that isn't important to you and your family. Why drag it all over the country, when it would be a whole lot easier to replace it later on if you need it. Some people put to much sentimental value on junk, now would be the time to lighten your load. Get rid of everything that you no longer use, surprisingly, there will be a lot of stuff that is just laying around in the basement or attic that you no longer use.

Moving insurance is a must.  The mover companies pay you off at so much per pound for damage.  And pics of the items that are especially important that you would want restored rather than replaced or paid for.

I agree, lighten the load, sell everything you can.  Keep in mind that what you find sentimental, doubtful your kids will when you pass away.

It's no different than the military, other than having to manage it yourself - arrange for the moving companies to come and do an estimate.  Be sure to find out how much they charge per day if the delivery day has to be postponed for some reason.

I've done it both ways since retiring.  Moving company was the easiest, one day to pack it all, next day load the truck, and they unload in a day at the destination.  Self move with uhaul, I pack the boxes - buy the uhaul boxes the standard sizes make packing the truck a lot easier, that alone took more than one day.  I hired day labor to bring things out to the truck and I arranged the packing in the truck.

Alot of moving around going on. Thanks for your comments everyone. Lighten the load is a great idea I am all for it. Now if I can get my wife to think it is a good idea. I have started cleaning out the shop and a lot of things I have moved who knows how many times over the last 30 years from one spot in the shop to another. I am hoping to get tools to NC to friends to store before major move. Thanks Jim for the suggestion the kids won't want it anyway. That may work. My dad just sold his house and stuff in it but the sentimental stuff was sent to us and my kids by a Niece but none of them or us wanted or asked for it. My wife complained she keeps sending it and no one wants it maybe it will help in the discussion.

If you use Pods beware that they are on the bottom of the list for paperwork. They overcharged me a month .I go back and forth with them for months.they took 11 days to deliverer and expect me to pay an extra month because it ran into the next month.scam.were talking hundreds of dollars their rateing is not even 1 star which says it all
