Scrappile Posted July 6, 2018 Report Posted July 6, 2018 I'll tell you, we do not have any good western TV shows to watch, like " Paladin", "Gunsmoke", Wagon Train", "Wanted, Dead or Alive", "Rawhide", "Bonanza", even further back, "Wild Bill Hickok" ('hey Wild Bill, wait for me"--- Jingles said that) "The Lone Ranger", "Roy Roger", "Hopalong Cassidy " (where did they get that name?), was there ever a good western mini-series after "Lonesome Dove"?? I miss westerns... For the most part, the good always won out over the evil..... ChelCass and bobscroll 2 Quote
rjweb Posted July 6, 2018 Report Posted July 6, 2018 I agree Paul, but I am into those mysteries where someone gets killed in the first 2 minutes and then you have an hour to solve it before they solve it for you, RJ WayneMahler and meflick 2 Quote

Phantom Scroller Posted July 6, 2018 Report Posted July 6, 2018 I miss the westerns the health & safety people would have a field day. Roly bobscroll 1 Quote
Fab4 Posted July 6, 2018 Report Posted July 6, 2018 Hi Paul Chuck Connors as the Rifleman - Where is he now? Sad part about this, it doesn't only apply to westerns Fab4 Quote
Sycamore67 Posted July 6, 2018 Report Posted July 6, 2018 One really good mystery/crime show is Murdoch Mysteries. It is about a Toronto detective in 1900. There are 11 seasons of the show. It is also called the Artful Detective on DirecTV. Roberta Moreton 1 Quote
dansnow Posted July 6, 2018 Report Posted July 6, 2018 TV "entertainment" has gotten so bad that NCIS, NCIS NewOrleans and Dr. Who are about the only entertainment shows we watch regularly. Mostly its Science Channel, National Geo, History Channel, Fox News and NetFlix movies. Quote
Dan Posted July 6, 2018 Report Posted July 6, 2018 My wife is always trying to get me to the movies. I always ask if there's a western playing somewhere. Unfortunately I have not been to a movie since the remake of Rooster Cogburn. Quote
JustLarry Posted July 6, 2018 Report Posted July 6, 2018 Some of the TV channels here show most of the shows Paul mentioned. Even watched some of the Three Stoogies on the 4th. The Statler Brothers asked about the changes back in 1973. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h30MPb62eXE Larry Quote
bobscroll Posted July 6, 2018 Report Posted July 6, 2018 (edited) I'm with you Paul! Sadly there are too many stressful soaps and reality programs on the telly...And don't forget PC brigade! There were so many great things on t.v. back then, Bob P.S. Even Dr Who's had a sex change! And the story lines are just utter rubbish! Edited July 6, 2018 by bobscroll Quote

DWSUDEKUM Posted July 6, 2018 Report Posted July 6, 2018 It's all part of the "how much is that doggie in the window" generation which is fading fast never to be seen outside of syndication again unfortunately. Quote
joleet Posted July 7, 2018 Report Posted July 7, 2018 We love the oldies and watch them almost daily. I wonder what they would be like if it wasn't for some of the co-stars, i.e. "Little House on the Prairie" without Mrs. Olson and Nellie; Andy Griffith Show without Barney and Otto; Golden Girls without Rose. The list could go on and on....Ron Quote
RabidAlien Posted July 8, 2018 Report Posted July 8, 2018 Fox cancelled "Firefly". History Channel started running "reality" shows. I quit watching pretty much anything but a couple of Netflix series. Quote
MTCowpoke22 Posted July 18, 2018 Report Posted July 18, 2018 Hell on Wheels started out ok, but got really weird in a hurry. I'm still waiting for someone to make a movie out of "The Last Buckaroo". If you are into good cowboy stories, it's a little more modern, but still a great read. Quote
Bill WIlson Posted July 19, 2018 Report Posted July 19, 2018 I too love the old TV Westerns, Laramie, The Virginian, Cheyenne, Zane Grey Theater, etc. But frankly, I wouldn't want Hollywood to try & produce one today, because it would never be the same. They've done a decent job with western movies in recent years, but I don't think TV could ever live up to our image of the westerns of the 50's & 60's. Part of their charm is that they were made for a different audience, in a different era. I don't think they could ever re-make the Andy Griffith show or I Love Lucy to our satisfaction either. I think our fondness for old westerns is rooted in the nostalgia of where we were when we watched them, both as individuals and as a society. Guys my age and older, grew up with a plethora of westerns on TV. They made a huge impression on us as kids. I doubt there is any way to re-capture that today. I prefer to watch them on the oldies TV channels these days. I just wish my cable provider offered a couple of the channels (GRIT and H&I) that have lots of old Westerns. bobscroll 1 Quote

ChelCass Posted July 21, 2018 Report Posted July 21, 2018 TV Land on Dish and Direct carry a lot of the old westerns. Most of the western stars like Chuck Connors etc have died. It a dying era. I can't stand 99% of the shows on TV. Very few do Oi watch. Quote
Sycamore67 Posted July 21, 2018 Report Posted July 21, 2018 If you like old time western, you should try listening to some of the ones that played on radio. The Gunsmoke ones are very good as well as Have Gun Will Travel. For mysteries, a series called Yours Truly Johnny Dollar is good. One can buy these on eBay on DVD and then download them to a player or phone. I have a zillion on my phone and listen to them while scrolling or working in my shop or play them thru my car radio with Bluetooth. In my shop i use Bluetooth headphones or a Bluetooth speaker that I built. Quote
