very nicely done.. I too am trying to learn pattern making and that is one of the questions I ask myself with every effort. I guess time and practice will help us to figure this thing out

Oh wow, that is awesome.  You really do have the knack of doing the patterns.  When I had a program that I could use to do patterns I was like you, am I taking to much out or am I leaving too much in, just don't get carried away and take too much out, less is more.  Do a pattern of yourself, that is THE hardest pattern of all.
