I think it was Heppner who says "its just one hole, one cut at a time".  Give it a try....bet you'll surprise yourself!

😀I bet I couldn't even find a piece of wood like that, let alone afford to buy it!!  And, what if I screwed up the beautiful piece of wood.  Wish I had gotten serious about scrolling at a younger age.. I may have at least trued to do something like this.

Start with a piece of pine?

Looking at it some more it looks like it is 3D in that there is more than one layer to it which makes for a cool concept. Love the thinking outside the box.

Yes it is layered.

Seriously!,,,, just when I think I am pretty good at scrolling pictures, I run across some thing like this.  WOW, I have a looong ways to go.  When I grow up, I want to be able to make something like this!!

I want to come closer and consider small details for a long time.👍

That is one amazing piece of wood with great cutting. Love the depth of it. I have had some Maple in my shop that was quilted but nothing close to this. Normally they turn this type of figured wood into veneer and wonder if this is the case for this project. Also looks as though some dye was used to high light the quilt. I am just totally amazed at this. And Paul, I'm sure you could cut this, just take your time and be patient.

Is it possible that the wood is textured with a tool then scrolled?  I googled “How to texture wood” and a few different techniques came up.

No that is a highly figured piece of curly maple. It has a clear finish on it and any oil finish will bring the details out. I have some but not as curly as that. I just used a piece of highly birdseye maple for a project that I am going to stain to pop it. It is a nice project and the wood choice was well worth it.
