The 50th anniversary celebration for the Lunar Landing is next month.  NASA commissioned JGR to create a piece commemorating that event.  one of our local news stations did a report on it and shows the piece in the video that can be found here on their website. I won't list all the detail provided in the article, but Judy said that

"It has over 150 hours in designing -- just making the pattern," Robert said. "And then we figured more than shop 1000 hours -- cutting and selecting the wood. And then the finish, I applied three coats of finish to each piece before it's glued to the backing." There are more than 1300 pieces in this piece of art according to Judy. It will be used at the celebration and then put on permanent display at the Kennedy Space Center.  I never got to see it in person, but having seen Judy's work, i know it is amazing and know it is filled with lots of tiny intricate pieces! I hope to see it one day in person.

There is some interesting information about some of the wood used in the piece, you can find that by watching the video clip, or reading the text below.

Right now,  the only way to "see" the piece is to watch the video clip - it is seen for the first time at about the 1 minute mark.  I have checked Judy's website and at the present time, she does not have any information or photos of the piece on her site.  I assume that is because they are waiting for the presentation and ceremony celebrating the 50th anniversary which is next Month (July, 2019.) Once I find a picture of it, I will update to show it so anyone interested in seeing, but doesn't or can't watch the video can see it.

Hmmm, let me check on my end and see if there seems to be a problem. If not, I wonder if it is because you and Brenda are out of the USA? 🤔 i wouldn’t think they would have any “limitations” like that but who knows? 🤨😔🙃

Not sure what the issue is, when I go there by clicking on the link above, I can then have the video play. Has anyone else been able to watch the video? 🤔 I may check with the tv station tomorrow and see if they can explain. 🤞🏻🙃

in the interim, I did a quick “screen capture” of it from the video. I will share it below. Frank, wasn’t she working on this when you were there for your class?

I have been tied up with other things so haven't had time to check with TV Station.  I had shared the same info. over on the SSWC magazine forum and asked the same question over there - was anyone else able to see it.  I had a couple of replies over there that said they were able to watch the video.  They are both in the USA.  Hmmmm . . .

It could very well be a difference in the broadcast standards. In the US, we employ NTSC. In Europe and most of Asia it is either PAL or SECAM.

I know this after spending 20+ years in consumer electronics retail. One of my guys sold a camcorder to a Greek tourist and nothing he shot was viewable when he got home.

With digital--like photos--there is not as much issue unless you try to view on non-native television and that is not as big a problem these days.

Judy has finally put some information on it up on her website with lots of photos of it all coming together. You can find it on her site here:

After seeing the many detailed build photos on Judy's web site, I am even more impressed by this art.

I wonder if she will put the pattern up for sale and, if she does, how many folks will actually make use of it.

A saw this on Facebook this morning. a truly amazing piece of work.

Where were you when the 1st moonwalk took place. ?
I was in High school and the school hired some Tellys. They packed about 5 classes in a room with one Black and white TV. It was truly quite amazing and very exciting.
There wasn't a TV to be hired anywhere in WA on the day

Frank, it looks like from the information on her website, she will have two “parts” of the entire piece she will be selling the pattern(s) for after it goes on display late July.  Those will be the Astronaut and the flag, and then the Eagle with the banner. You can find that further info. and Provide a email address to get notified when she is accepting orders on her site here looks like:

John - I would have been 6 years old and just have finished 1st grade. I do remember watching it on the news.

Thanks Melanie, I guess that I should have dug around at her site a little more and then I would have been able to answer my own question.

My question about the pattern was just curiosity.  I will not be one of the people attempting to build this.
