Popular Post Foxfold Posted August 12, 2019 Popular Post Report Posted August 12, 2019 (edited) My first ever 'Commissioned' Piece. Someone had seen one of my Elephants and asked if I could do a 'Tree of Life' piece for her friends wedding. She gave me a photo of a tree of life that had been done in wrought iron for a garden gate and asked if I could do one the same in wood. Well, this is my attempt. I've done the backer in dark walnut as I thought it looked more subtle than my usual black and I've done it circular rather than 'square'. It's not yet 'glued' together, but please could you tell me if you think it's 'good' enough to put together and give to her. I can see so many flaws that I can't see the 'whole' thing anymore . I am never offended by honest criticism, I'd rather do it again than give a substandard piece to someone who's actually paying for this. It's 12" across. rjR Posted August 12, 2019 Report Posted August 12, 2019 Looks fantastic! The walnut background makes it extraordinary! Foxfold 1 Quote

dgman Posted August 13, 2019 Report Posted August 13, 2019 Brenda, we are our own worst critics. I tell my students that nobody is going to pull out a pattern and compare it to your piece. I saw one area that needs to be trimmed with an Exacto knife, but if not addressed, the average person will never see it. In my opinion, it’s great, ship it! Foxfold Posted August 13, 2019 Author Report Posted August 13, 2019 (edited) Thank you all for your lovely comments. It wasn't a difficult piece to cut, although I've never attempted to 'frame' anything before let alone a circular piece, so that was a learning curve. In the end I just cut a ½" piece off the original cut and stained it the same colour as the backer and put a circular 'shim' between the two. Looking at it today in the 'cold light of day' and after good nights sleep, I see a lot less flaws than I did last night and it certainly looks more presentable. I think I was just a little tense as it is such an important piece for the lady who ordered it and not a little 'petrified' at having agreed to do something for such an important occasion Edited August 13, 2019 by Foxfold spelling Quote

heppnerguy Posted August 13, 2019 Report Posted August 13, 2019 Congratulations on getting your first commissioned piece. It will most likely be not only well received but also cherished throughout the couples lives. After all the rest of their gifts are used and forgotten, yours will probably be handed down to their children and continued to be admired and cherished. Dick heppnerguy Foxfold 1 Quote
