LarryEA Posted February 7, 2020 Report Posted February 7, 2020 Someone besides me must be having night time leg cramps.... It starts with my big toe turning up and I actually have to push it down and hold it flat for a minute or so. When this happens, my calf aches. Laugh if you want but all this is true. Asked my Doctor about it once and he kinda just ignored my question. Looked it up online and get the "Old age, dehydration" thing...."Drink 6 glasses of water a day..." If I drank that much, I would be doing nothing but drinking and peeing all day. One site said take magnesium...Seems like it is helping ...maybe So, anyone else having this problem? Quote
Rockytime Posted February 7, 2020 Report Posted February 7, 2020 My wife is 75 years old and has had restless feet for several years. Don't know if that's the same thing. Her feet are very painful. She has not had a night's sleep for several years. At most she sleeps two or three hours a night. She is up all night cleaning the house, doing laundry, reading or watching TV. She is always totally fatigued. She sees no one. Depression is often severe. She has pretty much given up hope. Neurologists say she has nerve damage in her feet and there is no known cure for it. I have neuropathy in my hands and feet. My Big toes also turn up. My feet tingle at night and keep me awake quite often. My wife has her feet wrapped tightly to relieve some pain but when it cuts off the circulation in her toes they become very painful and she has to remove the wrap for awhile and then re-wrap the feet again. She only goes out to shop for groceries and take me to doctor visits. I can drive but have very little hearing as to what the doctor says. She takes care of everything in spite of how miserable she feels. It's what we live with as we age. Wish I had some sage advice to give! LarryEA 1 Quote

I believe in prayer and God hears and responds, maybe slowly and maybe not what you expect. May our God bless you and your wife. Give her rest and a good nights sleep. Thanks for the reply. Prayers for you both. PS: Les, I don't remember everyones name, so I probrbly will call you Rocky or Rockytame next time GrampaJim 1 Quote
wombatie Posted February 7, 2020 Report Posted February 7, 2020 Terry takes Magnesium because if he didn't he would get sever cramp every night. So for him it works. Marg LarryEA 1 Quote
Fedido Posted February 7, 2020 Report Posted February 7, 2020 Larry, I don't get cramps in my legs like you, but rather aches and pains everywhere while getting bad to horrible sleep every night. I can understand the frustration. One thing to remember though, don't let it get to you. One of the major reasons I started scrolling is because I can make visual progress, but yet take breaks when needed. Depending on the stage of a project, I have gone into the living room with sandpaper and watch TV so I can relax these high mileage bones while still getting something done, until my hands cramp up, then I am done. Just my two cents worth and feel free to leave any and all change. Hendo LarryEA 1 Quote

Scrappile Posted February 7, 2020 Report Posted February 7, 2020 I have them sometime and the restless legs, also, but have not tried to do much about it. Only have it happen maybe once a week or so. My wife had a lot of trouble with cramps, and she went off her cholesterol medication, after discussing it with her doctor. That helped a lot. It can be a side effect of some cholesterol meds, in some people. LarryEA 1 Quote

bcdennis Posted February 7, 2020 Report Posted February 7, 2020 My wife has restless leg syndrome and her Dr. Prescribed her a pill for it. As long as she takes the pill she can sleep fine. If she forgets she is up all night. Quote
Gordster Posted February 7, 2020 Report Posted February 7, 2020 Hi Larry,I get them from time to time..will bring a tear to your eyes sometime. What I find helps is eating some cheese. When I eat a bit of cheese every day or two,the cramps are not as plentiful. LarryEA 1 Quote
orangeman Posted February 7, 2020 Report Posted February 7, 2020 Doc prescribed quinine pills for my Dad and it worked. I get my quinine with gin and tonic - lol. Actually I have had a cramp or too - hydration works! bb LarryEA 1 Quote
oldhudson Posted February 8, 2020 Report Posted February 8, 2020 I've had leg cramps for years. I often wake with them and have to get up and walk them off. I've tried quinine - waste of money. A few months ago I started using a product called Theraworx. I saw it advertised on the Jeopardy Game Show. It's a topical medicine. I've been using it on one leg, the one with the worst problem, and not the other. It really has helped me. I'm using it on both legs now every other night before bed. It's made in the US. (Full disclosure: Neither I nor any of my family has any association with those the make and market this product.) Quote

Wichman Posted February 8, 2020 Report Posted February 8, 2020 Disclaimer!! I am not a medical professional in any sense. This is my experiences and what I have done to reduce the problems. Do not take mega doses of anything unless you have professional medical assistance. I have had night time leg cramps since I was a small child (5 or 6 years old). I tried many remedies over the years (I am 60 now). Then I made a connection, I was in the National Guard and involved with field exercises every weekend for 4 weeks in a row. The first two weekends were fine, it was cold and so the medics didn't do anything to the water supply (water tanks on trailers), the third weekend the medics added Chlorine to the water (to prevent bacterial growth). We started Friday night, Sun morning I woke up a 2 am with a screaming meemie of a migraine. Had an aha moment...chlorine was causing my headaches. The fourth weekend I took my own water, gal jugs of spring water; no headaches. During our two week training that year I took enough spring water I didn't use any chlorinated water, no headaches and a whole host of other problems disappeared, including leg cramps. Over the years I've found other things that have helped me (although they may not help you). Avoid chlorine like the plague, I have a shower head filter. I've used whole house filters to good effect Check with your Dr. have a blood test to see if your electrolytes are low or subpar, also your D3 make sure you are hydrated, is your urine pale or dark? Yes, if chlorine is part of the problem then drinking lots of chlorinated water will just make it worse. One of the best supplements for me is calcium with magnesium and zinc I take a lot of D3 (7000 iu daily), but the blood tests show me just within the normal range. Again, do not take mega does without medical supervision and blood tests. LarryEA 1 Quote
LarryEA Posted February 8, 2020 Author Report Posted February 8, 2020 I have blood tests often since I have Mylodsplasma Syndrome (Lazy Bones). My bone Marrow does not make blood like it should. I receive a list of my vitals after every blood test, I will check it on my next test which is next week. Thank you all Quote
crupiea Posted February 9, 2020 Report Posted February 9, 2020 Pickle juice works too but you have to drink it so there is that. Water and magnesium should do the trick, srs. LarryEA 1 Quote
LarryEA Posted February 10, 2020 Author Report Posted February 10, 2020 Does anyone know what the dosage of magnesium should be? Quote
Chiloquinruss Posted February 10, 2020 Report Posted February 10, 2020 My wife suffers from leg cramps on a semi regular basis. She has a quick 'remedy' (not a cure). She takes a little yellow mustard and the effect is almost immediate. It sounds hokey but Google yellow mustard leg cramps and read on. The medical profession says it doesn't work, but my wife will argue that point! Russ LarryEA 1 Quote
