John B Posted May 27, 2020 Report Posted May 27, 2020 (edited) Who remembers the News shorts before the show, at the Drive-ins or movies. I always looked forward to the News, a cartoon and the shorts before intermission. Intermission was the best part as I had a shilling or two to spend at the concession. No cool drinks, but ice cream or lollies were OK. Chips had to be eaten before getting back in the car The Drive-in was better, it had 2 movies https://aso.gov.au/titles/newsreels/movietone-special-peace/clip1/ Edited May 28, 2020 by John B RabidAlien 1 Quote
Jim McDonald Posted May 27, 2020 Report Posted May 27, 2020 My mother packed a picnic basket. Brought a water jug and cups for the kids along with sandwiches and homemade popcorn. John B 1 Quote
WoodCutter Posted May 27, 2020 Report Posted May 27, 2020 I remember drive-in times. We lived about a 3 hour drive, in the 40 ford, from the drive-in. It was a all day thing. went to Sears an Robucs got dry goods, then Monkey Wards for other stuff. Then to Big Y for our monthly food supplies. by then it was late in the day and we went to I think Dairy Queen and got supper. Went to Drive-in ate dinner and played in the playground it had. After the movie we went home. I think that dad slept during the movie. we only did this once a month. this was in the early 50s. danny and John B 2 Quote

spirithorse Posted May 28, 2020 Report Posted May 28, 2020 I'm thankful we still have two drive-in theaters within about an hour from my home but, they are both pretty trashy. One even shows a history of the timeline of the drive in on their web page and their very small restroom has not been re-modeled since about 1962! Worse yet, the new owners have people patrolling the area and they are like Gestapo or something just looking for reasons to tell people to move their vehicle or catch people bringing food in. They claim they can only stay in business if people buy from the concession stand and they will induce a $15 fine if you bring food in. God Bless! Spirithorse John B 1 Quote

My Uncle was a Polar Bear (white Overalls), on the gate at the Twin City Drives in Kal. He told the story how after the show, they concession stand had been cleaned and shut and there was still a Mini Minor parked up. He went down to wake the people and tell them to go home and he found a bloke in there with his foot jammed under the dash and his strides around his ankles. His girl friend had left him to it :). It took two fellows to lift and twist the driver so as to get his foot out. MY uncle said they never saw that mini again Quote
