dgman Posted January 20, 2021 Report Posted January 20, 2021 (edited) Here we are in sunny Southern California. The Santa Anna winds are a howling. So, So. Ca. Edison, the local electric Co. decides to shut off the electricity so their transmission lines don’t start fires. Sitting here in the dark with my wife, mother in-law and the dog. Fortunately, we have a WiFi hot spot so I can still surf the web to see if the country is still together. And I have you guys! P.S. cooking in the dark is so much fun, Beef and Broccoli, yum! spirithorse Posted January 20, 2021 Report Posted January 20, 2021 Aww, how sweet! Sitting in the dark with your wife, the mother-in-law, and the dog! Thanks for reminding us how lucky you are. I hope they get the power back on soon just so you can see what you are cooking. God Bless! Spirithorse Quote
LarryEA Posted January 20, 2021 Report Posted January 20, 2021 Educational about the winds being a problem. Wish you well. What do you do for lights? Quote
dgman Posted January 20, 2021 Author Report Posted January 20, 2021 Lots of candles, battery operated shop lights and my old camping headlight. Cooked dinner with the headlight. wombatie 1 Quote
wombatie Posted January 20, 2021 Report Posted January 20, 2021 Is it just for a few hours, or a few days? Marg Quote
WayneMahler Posted January 20, 2021 Report Posted January 20, 2021 Never thought about wind and power lines and fires. It sort of makes sense but has to be extremely difficult to go through. I hope thing works out good and they don't keep it off too long. I can imagine food in the fridge has to suffer too if off long enough. Quote
amazingkevin Posted January 20, 2021 Report Posted January 20, 2021 There are worse evils, you'll make it!!! Quote
jerry1939 Posted January 20, 2021 Report Posted January 20, 2021 Sorry to hear that. Do like the Amish, watch TV by candle light. kmmcrafts 1 Quote

The winds are still blowing at 10:15 am, and still no power. In high winds and drought conditions, the high power transmission lines have been known to start brush fires. Once a fire breaks out, it is very difficult to contain in these high winds. The winds are supposed to continue throughout the day, and maybe into the night. Might have to cook in the dark again. If you don’t hear from me this evening, you’ll know why. danny and wombatie 1 1 Quote
RabidAlien Posted January 20, 2021 Report Posted January 20, 2021 Ours went down for an hour or so back in the Fall, all the houses around were dark. I fired up a Coleman liquid-fuel lantern and the house was just about as bright as before. LOL No TV? No biggie. Dead-tree books it is! Quote
teachnlearn Posted January 20, 2021 Report Posted January 20, 2021 Not only did they use candles during tv, they also used them while posting on facebook. RJF kmmcrafts and danny 1 1 Quote

kmmcrafts Posted January 21, 2021 Report Posted January 21, 2021 Glad to hear you got the electric back on. When it goes off and after some time with it off you begin to realize how much we rely on that power source.. and the joy of having it come back on is almost like a kid at a amusement park.. Scrappile Posted January 21, 2021 Report Posted January 21, 2021 Why is it that high winds only seem to affect the Cal. grid... we have very high winds sometime but nothing is shut down... Had over 50 mph the other night... not a flicker in the lights... sounded like my roof was coming off... but it was still there next morning... Quote

A lot of the recent major fires where caused by the high transmission wires arcing and causing sparks. Remember, we are in another drought, so everything is as dry as can be. You get a few sparks, you get fire, so Edison is being preemptive and shutting off the power. Quote
