You should try the DecoArt Americana paints from Michaels.  You can get a staining medium that you mix the paint into. it keeps it thicker, but lets it act like a stain, and you can set how much paint vs medium you want..  I think you would have some real good coloring, and still leave a nice wood grain pattern under it.

thanks i'm sure i have some but getting to it is the problem
