Wichman Posted April 22, 2022 Report Posted April 22, 2022 I've started on a requested piece. A name with a rose attached. First picture in the wood blank. Second is where I will put the pattern. I cut (roughly) one section of the pattern out so I could place the pattern so as to miss the knot. I'll post more pictures as I progress. Dak0ta52 1 Quote
Wichman Posted April 23, 2022 Author Report Posted April 23, 2022 I've got the inside of the letters cut out and part of the rose. The piece is too heavy on the letter side, so I'm going to cut some of the outside waste on the letter side (red lines). Loskoppie 1 Quote

Wichman Posted April 24, 2022 Author Report Posted April 24, 2022 (edited) This is the pattern with the waste cut off the letter side, better balance on the saw table. I have the next cuts labeled and marked where I want to remove waste first. Because of the fragile nature of the piece I taped the scrap back on the support the piece and have a place to push on that's not fragile. Edited April 24, 2022 by Wichman add image Quote
Wichman Posted April 24, 2022 Author Report Posted April 24, 2022 First go round with the food dye. Tomorrow I will go over the piece and look for skips and do the underside of the first petals. Customer wants vibrant red. goldfish and meflick 2 Quote
Wichman Posted April 26, 2022 Author Report Posted April 26, 2022 Last picture. This is 4 coats of spray poly, clear gloss. The wood just kept soaking up the poly and I'm not getting the gloss look I was going for, the surface also feels rough. Any thoughts on the finish? meflick, Dak0ta52 and TexasDIY 3 Quote
barb.j.enders Posted April 26, 2022 Report Posted April 26, 2022 Looking good. I have no comments on the finish as I never seem to get as good a finish as I would like. Quote
preprius Posted April 27, 2022 Report Posted April 27, 2022 if the wood is pine it will soak it up. The guy at woodcraft told me 5 coats. And sand between coats. But he was talking about water based finish. Quote

The place that just kept soaking up the finish was the last petals before the stem, the last coat I kept spraying the petal and it kept soaking it up sprayed at least 4 times. Quote
FrankEV Posted April 30, 2022 Report Posted April 30, 2022 (edited) Possibly you are not waiting long enough between coats for the poly to REALLY dry. Don't go by what the can says. A following coat of poly on not really dry previous coat only softens the previous coat allowing it to continue to soak in. It needs to be dry to close the wood pores and remain on the surface. In hindsight, an appropriate wood sealer may have been a wise choice prior to applying the poly. You have committed to Poly so you really can not change finish material now except you can use a wipe on poly. I suggest you wait a few days, sand well with 600 or 1500 grit wet and dry paper. To get a nice smooth finish (if the wood is smmoth) use small amounts of wipe on poly and apply/rub using the 1500 grit paper. You keep rubbing untill the poly kind of disapears and the surface feels almost dry to the touch and none comes off on your fingers. Buff with a clean soft rag and let dry for at least 24 hours. This is how hand made furniture is finished...the difficulty is your project is not a flat surface and iwill be much more difficult to use this tenchnique on.
