I'm glad it was me rather than my wife that opened the storage closet door behind my shop this morning. When I opened it he nearly fell so he sort of swung down by my face. Rat free closet though. :) This is actually the smaller of the two we see occasionally. Here' a pic of the big brother, mom, whatever. My wife isn't as attached to them as I am. Especially when she takes the dog out to potty at night. :)

What kind is that?

We have Black snakes that big in our area. Not harmful to us, but can be quite scary if you're not used to them

OMG! What the heck kind of snake is that? He looks like a small python. I don't do snakes so if one like that showed up in my shop, I'm not sure I'd go back.

Both are rat snakes. Very good to have around if you live near the woods. Keeps the mouse population down. 🙂

Snakes have been bad in my area this year. I've actually had two come into my shop while I was working, a corn snake and a red belly water snake. I was able to get one out and carry back to the woods. The other got away from me and I lost him under a cabinet. He'll probably surprise me like this one did you. What scares me is the one we found on your back patio beside the steps. A timber rattler about 4-feet long. Usually if you see one timber rattler, there is another nearby. I try my best to relocate them.

The hill I live on was once called Rattle Snake Hill because of all the rattle snakes. I have 25 acres and try to keep the biggest part of the cleared area around the house mowed. (About 8 acres) That makes it easier to spot them. The largest I've seen was a timber rattler on the road in front of my house. He was about 8-feet long. His head was about 4-inches wide. Actually called wildlife management to relocate him. He was bigger than what I wanted to mess with.

i used to live in the mojave desert,  14 miles outside of the city Mojave.

There is a rattle snake called "Mojave Green". It does have a slight green tone.  Like an old faded water hose.  The snake has 2 kinds of poison.  1 attacks nervous system, 1 attack muscles.  When I lived there there was no anti venum.  A story of a big 6.5 ft guy got scratched with poison.   He survived but was in hospital for 10 days.  He had a small 22 pistol with snake shot and got too close.

I have a theory about snakes and it has stood me in good stead for many years. "The only Good Snake is a Dead Snake" 🐍

I understand how people feel that way. They're creepy looking things and truthfully make my hair stand up too. I love having these rat snakes around though as they keep the rodent population in the woods behind the house down. The grandkids love seeing them occasionally too. I found this skin in the tree house once so now they make me go check before they go up there. :)

as a kid I remember finding discarded skins on the farm, but unfortunately we do have to many non poisonous Joe Blakes in West Oz.
I do under stand people letting "Rat snakes" live in peace, but ............................ :)

Well I'm gobsmacked!!  😉😅  From what I read Australia is full of weird, dangerous critters..  Fact my son was over there once and he a some guys were going to take an hike and one of the Australian asked them what gun they were taking.. Said they were crazy if they went hiking out in the wild without a gun for protection against all the deadly critters..  I wrote gobsmacked, because in my very advanced age, I had never come across that term before... I love it!
