Popular Post GrampaJim Posted August 27, 2022 Popular Post Report Posted August 27, 2022 When I first got interested in scroll sawing about 6-7 years ago, I found Steve Good’s site and his videos. Because money was tight, I really liked his “Getting started in the scroll saw hobby cheap” videos and soon bought a new Craftsman saw. It broke after 3 months and was repaired under warranty. It broke again 2 months later, so I gave it away and bought used a Dewalt type 1 for big bucks (at the time). I soon figured out that doing pilot holes for interior cuts with my old hand held electric drill was a bad idea – so I had to by a small drill press. And a foot switch for the saw and a magnifying light. I started buying rough lumber from the nearby lumber mill, so then I needed to buy a planner. Then I needed a chop saw to cut the lumber into smaller pieces. Then a router and router table to finish the edges of my projects. Then I needed more benches. So there I was happily making saw dust, but then the house started filling up with projects I had made. By this time I should have realized that scroll sawing “could” be cheap, but that doesn’t mean it will stay cheap. Hmm now I have a different problem. How to SLOW DOWN my output and still have fun. I know – I’ll start doing Intarsia. It looks difficult, so I need to invest in books and DVD’s. And a slow speed grinder and sanding sleeves. Wow – look at all the dust – my wife will kill me for filling the basement where the shop is full of dust - so now I need a dust collector. And then I needed hoses and gates and connectors. So here I am with a basement full of tools. It may have started as a cheap hobby, but it didn’t say that way. Seriously, I think Steve Good is a huge assent to the scroll saw world. I have followed is blog and his Yourtube channel forever. ChelCass, WayneMahler, Dak0ta52 and 8 others 4 7 Quote
don in brooklin on Posted August 27, 2022 Report Posted August 27, 2022 If you want to go down the rabbit hole in woodworking try woodturning. I bought a reasonable lathe for just less than $1000 and that was just the start. I recently sold all my turning tools and stuff and added it all up before a sold it and it was $5,500. When I started scrolling I listened to Steve closely and I bought the best I could afford - an EX-21 and since then I have only bought blades, wood and sand paper. I did do some Intarsia and a trip to Judy Gale Roberts did add a grinder and flexible sanding for about $150. As you say Steve is a great asset to this community. GrampaJim Posted August 27, 2022 Author Report Posted August 27, 2022 There is an old joke that goes something like this: My biggest fear this that if I die, may wife will sell all my tools for what I told her I paid for them. ChelCass, Hawk, OCtoolguy and 4 others 7 Quote
ChelCass Posted August 27, 2022 Report Posted August 27, 2022 You think scroll sawing is expensive try Stained glass. One piece of good glass can cost over a hundred dollars. A 12x12 reg. piece of glass is 10.00 to 15.00 dollars and up, A glass saw is 400.00 and up, a glass grinder is 200.00, misc tools and cutter added up to another hundred or so. Then you have solder at 20.00 plus a spool, don't forget you need a soldering iron and a holder and a regulator. The list goes on. I do both scroll sawing and stained glass......................Sigh WayneMahler, bobscroll and OCtoolguy 3 Quote
Eplfan2011 Posted August 27, 2022 Report Posted August 27, 2022 Personally half of the fun in woodworking is getting new tools ! I've only just started scrolling but I have a pretty well stocked shop, but now I've got an excuse to expand my sanding options OCtoolguy, Gene Howe and ChelCass 2 1 Quote
OCtoolguy Posted August 27, 2022 Report Posted August 27, 2022 That's the reason I have 3 scroll saws. Who needs 3? I have bought nothing new. I watch for deals on used. I can't help myself. I'm still watching for more used equipment. I'm out of space. I live in a mobile home. I'm considering buying the one next door and turning it into a shop. Help! I need help! What was it? I look only for deals on REAL Excaliburs and Hegners. I've never seen a used Seyco and I don't have room for a Hawk unless it's a small one. I had a very nice 226 Ultra but the footprint was just too big. I had to let it go. But I got enough out of it to buy 2 Hegners. Quote

Yep my 226 ultra is big but being as I'm now an empty nester I've stolen the basement bedroom and took up the carpet up and now it's the scrollsaw workshop OCtoolguy and Gene Howe 1 1 Quote

We are thinking of relocating so I'm hoping for something similar. By the way, your profile pic has 2 handsome guys in it. Which one are you? Quote
