Thanks for the kind comments, I purchased the LED's (or Light Emitting Diodes) to give them their correct name from Amazon.

They are very cheap to buy and come in various colours. The ones I used were 5mm but other sizes are available.

The LED has 2 legs, the longer one is the positive and the shorter one is the negative connection.

I soldered the 2 positive legs together and the 2 negative legs together, then simply connected a 3V watch battery to power them.

I have included a picture of some green and white LED's.
