Sycamore67 Posted March 14, 2023 Report Posted March 14, 2023 Well, the teeth are done and preliminary shaping done and time to do shaping and contouring. I spent some time on the mouth and tongue both on shims and contours. I decided that instead of shims, I needed to make the pieces shorter so they appear farther back. I also had to sand the slot in the tongue with the tape backed sandpaper that I mentioned in another post and also some more shaping. Actually, there was a lot more shaping with almost every piece. I attempted to follow the pictures I had of a T Rex and make this project more realistic. After shaping with the Dremel, the pieces were sanding to remove any marks form the Dremel and then a final sanding with a Sanding Mop. I also shortened the piece in front of the eye and contoured it with my Dremel. Now, I I wanted to add some texture to the skin of the T Rex. I went online and found some pictures that showed what the skin looked like based on imprints in the rock next to the fossil. I worked on some scrap pieces to try to simulate the pictures and did the best I could. I tried a number of different bits in my Dremel and different techniques before I found something that I liked. I was finally ready to assemble the Intarsia and I glued the pieces to a piece of 1/8” Baltic Birch. For a frame, I looked at several different backgrounds and finally decided on some blue Pine. I resawed a ¾” board and then glued them together in a book match and made the frame from Poplar. Everything was finished with water base semi-gloss poly. The final picture is posted in the Intarsia sub-forum. I know that many will not want to go to this extent to make Intarsia. But the good thing is that each person makes the choice about how to express their artistic desires. I hope that this has not been too boring and may help someone with Intarsia. meflick, Scrappile, JessL and 3 others 5 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted March 14, 2023 Report Posted March 14, 2023 I was wondering about the texture. That really sets it up a few notches, well done. Quote
meflick Posted March 15, 2023 Report Posted March 15, 2023 You do it pretty much like Judy Gale Roberts teaches how she does it. Since, I started with her classes, pretty much how I do it to. Beautiful work. But to get there, a lot of time and effort is put into the process for sure. You should add links back to these “how to threads” in your final art posting in the Intarsia sub- forum. It would be good for folks who see the final piece to be able to come review how you got there. Quote
Gene Howe Posted March 16, 2023 Report Posted March 16, 2023 Lary, thanks for the mini tutorial. Would love to see more...lots more! Quote
Sycamore67 Posted March 16, 2023 Author Report Posted March 16, 2023 I appreciate the replies. However, based on the few replies and likes for the three tutorials, I doubt I will do any more. There does not seem to be enough interest in the topic to justify the time it takes. Quote
Peter N White Posted March 16, 2023 Report Posted March 16, 2023 Was looking forward to tutorial as L am just starting done 2 so far. Quote

Totally understandable. However, I greatly appreciate the time and expertise you used in putting it together for us. Quote
