The texture for the round area in front of the eye was made with a small 1/8" tube chucked in my Dremel.  I cut small teeth in it and plunged vertically into the wood.  It was then sanded with a 220 mop.

The Texture on the jaw and other places was done with a Dremel using a pointed diamond bit. After engraving, the areas were lightly sanded.  The diamond bits work ok but do wear out after awhile.  But they are cheap as this set was about $12 on Amazon.

I actually tried a bunch of different things.  For me, I enjoy doing real Intarsia and trying different things.  I am in no hurry.  I will have to admit that I drove my wife nuts looking at my various trials.
