Wait a minute.  how does that help.  You still can get tangled up.  the hose is still out there while you vacuum.  But are you asking about the cord or the hose.  I would think that unless whichever automatically retracts if there is no friction holding it from retracting, you will have the same problem when actually using vac.  Maybe I am confused.

Agree with Paul, Only way I could see a feasible option would be to make vac hose runs from the ceiling to areas you use the vac most.

That being said, if you're like me and don't wind up the vac hose when done and just leave it laying on the floor so it's there.. like I use my vac in different areas pretty much daily or several times a day and it's really not worth the effort to wind up the hose and get it out of the way.. This is where having a small handheld one comes in handy for small clean-up jobs. I have a metro 500 handheld that I started using quite a lot.. has a really long power cord too but still be nicer if it were cordless.

Over on the far side of my shop you can see my shop vac setup. It's kind of big and bulky but it works efficiently. This past week I spent a couple of days deep cleaning my shop because it was a pit. Wheeling my shop vac around the cord was constantly in the way of the wheels. I would  also have to unplug it and plug it into a different outlet to reach around my shop. I have a small air compressor that I have hooked up to a hose reel on the wall which I really like so that is what gave me the idea of a shop vac hose reel. I get your point about dealing with a long hose. I'm just kicking around the idea to make it handier. Kevin's idea of a portable vac is also something to think about.

Okay the cord.  How about something like this.  I had one in my garage and it worked pretty well until the wasps made a nest in it and gummed up the inner works.  You could mount it to the wall or two you roll around shop vac cart.  I do not know which way would work better.  But. Dave it is also time for an new five gallon bucketI

I was looking at cordless. Most of them don't come with a battery and charger. Once you buy those they a pretty pricey. I don't mind paying the price if I love it.

Yeah, I don't know much about the cordless ones.. and how well they work. I know I use mine handheld quite a lot.. in fact the wife comes and gets it to use in the house quite often too.. If you have a set of cordless tools and they have a vac in the same brand so batteries could swap out then it doesn't hurt the pocket quite so bad.

Wife bought a cheap HF leaf blower a few years ago and since we have the batteries for it I've found myself buying the bare tools.. So far they've all been pretty good surprisingly.. I see HF has a cordless one in the Bauer line and that's what my batteries / tools are so maybe I'll have to consider trying that vac..
