Last fall I purchased a 4-pack of remanufactured ink cartridges for my printer.  They were about half the price of HPs ink and were guaranteed to work.  I installed one color shortly thereafter and the printer told me that it wasn't a HP cartridge.  After acknowledging that, it allowed the printing to go on.  Yesterday I put in another color that ran out and not only did it tell me that it wasn't a HP cartridge (didn't have a HP chip in it) but it blocked the printer from using it!  After a long chat with the supplier I found out that HP upgraded their firmware to not allow 3rd party ink cartridges to be used in their printers now 🤬.  Does this corporate greed happen with other printer manufacturers?

I have an HP printer, I've never had much trouble printing, but then I always buy HP ink. The idea that if I run out of any color of ink, it will brick the printer (be nonfunctional for any task) is why ( unless changed ) I will never buy another HP product, period.

I like the printer I have, officejet pro 7740, prints and scans at 11 x 17, prints wirelessly from any of my devices. The silly thing even has an e-mail address and I can send docs from my phone to be printed at the house and I have used this feature although not very often. I normally leave the printer shut off so hacking is a low level threat.

When I print, I use the off colors (blue and yellow) to shade the fill of patterns;

1. to keep the inkjets from clogging from not being used

2. utilize all the ink

I print the pattern lines in red (mostly) and the black for the odd text page I need. Just trying to keep the usage balanced.

I tried all the different brands of inkjet printers and inks. I had nothing but disappointment. I finally found a deal on a Brother all in one laser printer. Not a print problem since. Over 3 years of trouble-free printing. Get a laser, leave your troubles behind.

Ray, the majority of my printing is pictures for my puzzles.  I read somewhere (now I’ll have to try to find it) that inkjet printers give you a better print on photo paper than lasers do. As an aside, after today I’m looking to replace my current printer with anything BUT a HP.  The ones with refillable ink tanks instead of cartridges look promising.  Any experience out there?

I used HP printers for many years and even went the route of subscribing to their Instant Ink service.
Was satisfied with both until the HP Envy printer stopped working last year after printing 24,000+ pages.
Looked around and settled on a Cannon GX1020 printer.
I am satisfied with it, and I believe the ink cost is less than HP.

I don't print photos so that was not important to me. I don't think lasers work on photo paper. As for inkjets, I tried the Canon with ink tank and it was a mess. That was an early model so they may have improved. At this point I will probably never have another inkjet printer but if I do it won't be an HP.

I have this same printer and I love it. I am stuck with having to buy the HP ink cartridges. I am going to try using the off colors more often to save black ink.

Many years ago I learned what most printer company’s has a built in function in the Firmware that is set to shut down the printer when it gets to around 25.000 copies, they now most people will buy a new one often the same brand.

I didn’t like that so I looked around and found a reset software what I installed and run and when my printer was set back to Zero copies and I could print another 25.000 and reset it again 😉

I don’t have the same printer now and have not got to the limit yet but when I do I look for it again, but Google is your friend so it will be possible to find the right software for your different printers when needed.

I did the same on my Brother laser and I'm still using the 4 toner cartridges that came with it. I bought a set to have but have not needed them yet.
