don in brooklin on Posted October 15, 2024 Report Posted October 15, 2024 I have downloaded the new version of Inkscape and so far no issues. There are a lot of changes for graphic designers with new palettes, filters etc. See release notes at https://inkscape.org/news/2024/10/13/inkscape-launches-version-14-powerful-new-accessib/ For pattern makers like myself the one big change is with fonts. You now can get a live screen preview of selected text as you move down with the arrow it changes the preview. You have to edit preferences. See below In addition to creating font collections you can select thing like serif only fonts etc. I see very little change except in the typing fonts the spacing is 2 AA and the down arrow. When you type a font it spacing is 5 but I think 0 is the normal. Every font is different. bobscroll, Wichman, Dan and 5 others 3 5 Quote
Wichman Posted October 20, 2024 Report Posted October 20, 2024 I'm about ready to revert to 1.32. Issues: When typing text the return key doesn't create a new line, it starts typing over the previous text. When erasing, inkscape no longer erases it just hides the erased portion and it can come back unexpectedly. Quote
rjweb Posted October 20, 2024 Report Posted October 20, 2024 I have downloaded the new 14.1, trying to teach myself, but not working out. When I use the text tool, it has a weird box when you are typing the letters, don't understand that, RJ Quote
don in brooklin on Posted October 21, 2024 Author Report Posted October 21, 2024 The little box is like a text box. I would suggest you watch a few videos. I would recommend the course by logobynick. Explains all the functions and menu. Quote
rjweb Posted October 21, 2024 Report Posted October 21, 2024 Thx Don, will look into those videos, RJ Quote

Got an answer to the text question on inkscape chat: With the text tool selected a tool bar appears at the top of the canvas. In the center of the toolbar is a tool that appears as two capital "A"'s stacked vertically, to the right of the numerical value is a pull down menu of various measuring systems you can choose from, I used in(ches). My default was 0.00, it needed to be 1.25. All better now . I never knew this function existed before, but it will be handy for word art. Quote
Dave Monk Posted October 25, 2024 Report Posted October 25, 2024 Has it fixed any issues with printing? Quote

No the following are pics I just took of printing attempts just now. The windows version only prints about 2/3's of the image, while the Linux version still shrinks the image from an 11 x 17 down to an 8 1/2 x 11 image, even when forced to print on an 11 x 17 paper. don in brooklin on Posted October 26, 2024 Author Report Posted October 26, 2024 Did you try to save to pdf and then print the pdf. This will give you a preview before printing. Quote

Dave and I both want to be able to print from within Inkscape in the native .SVG. the extra step is just annoying. I can print 11 x 17 in many of the other programs that I use, Libre office, Adobe, Big print, to name a few. It's not the machine or the printer, it's Inkscape. Quote
Wichman Posted October 29, 2024 Report Posted October 29, 2024 Just saw this in a Facebook group and thought I'd share. If your stroke width is scaling and you don't want it to then: Edit > Preferences > Behavior > Transforms > uncheck "Scale stroke width" JJB 1 Quote

don in brooklin on Posted October 30, 2024 Author Report Posted October 30, 2024 In example below. Square A is 3 x 3 with 4 px stroke. With Transform - Stroke with checked and a duplicate square B resized to 4 x 4 the stroke width becomes 5.2 px If Transform - Stroke unchecked the stroke stays at 4. Square C I believe the default when installed is checked. This is handy to unchecked as I like to have a 1 px red stroke when designing patterns Wichman and Fab4 2 Quote
