  1. That turned out really cool. You did a great job on it. Its such a thrill to see my pattern cut. Thank you for sharing with us. I like the lettering you added. Great touch.
  2. Hi George. Welcome to the Village. Portrait freedom is a wonderful group. Very well run organization with many talented folks who are dedicated bringing honor to the memory of our fallen heroes. Its great you're donating your talents to this wonderful cause. We'd love to see some of your work. You can set up a User Gallery (you can find a [tut]tutorial here.[/tut]) to show off a little. Anyway, we're glad to have you on board. Jump in and have some fun!
  3. We have some really nice entries so far. We still have a little over a week before we close the contest for entries and begin our voting stage! So scrape together your ideas and present them here for consideration. Remember, the winning designer will get a super cool scroll saw t-shirt! You'll be the envy of all of your friends!
  4. I really like that. I love how the road breaks out of the frame. Nicely done!
  5. We've gone through the User Galleries and moved all patterns to the Pattern Library and deleted duplicate files. We're in the process of going through the New Pattern Announcement forum and downloading attached patterns and re-uploading them to the Pattern Library. Normally, patterns stay in the New Patterns album for about 30 days before being categorized. But since the process of cleaning up the gallery system is a daunting task, we found it easier to categorize everything to date so we can look for duplicate files. Once we get everything completely organized once again, we'll revert back to our "30 days in the New Patterns album" system. Thanks for your help, everybody!
  6. Hi Sebastian. Welcome to the Village. We're glad you found us. There are lots of friendly and talented folks here. I think you'll have a good time. Jump on in and have some fun. We're glad to have you onboard.
  7. Hrmmmm...seems to be working fine or me. Are you trying to download the MP4 or the MOV? If you are copying and pasting the file URL, you might have cut off part of the URL. That would cause that kind of error. I'd give it another try and see what happens. Maybe reboot the computer too. Sometimes my computer gives me attitude and I have to reboot.
  8. Hi Rick. Welcome to the Village. I've checked out some of your patterns and cuttings. They look great! We'd love to see how you do your inlay portrait techniques. It's a very unique approach that really adds a cool edge. Anyway, we're glad to have you on board. Jump on in and have some fun!
  9. Hi Dan. Welcome to the Village. I'm glad you found us. There are lots of friendly and talented folks here. I think you'll fit right in. We'd love to see some of your work. You can create your own User Gallery (you can find a [tut]tutorial[/tut] here) and show off a little. Anyway, we're glad to have you on board! Jump in and have some fun!
  10. First off, I'd like to thank all of the wonderful pattern designers out there sharing their talents with the rest of us. It is a wonderful thing where we can all gather and share patterns with each other. I think that's really cool. And best of all, there is never a shortage of something to cut. In the past, I have allowed folks to keep copies of their patterns in their personal User Gallery. Unfortunately, this is starting to get a bit confusing. There are nearly 1200 files to keep track of and that number is growing exponentially. It is too difficult to know if a pattern is a duplicate, if they'd rather keep it in their User Gallery, or if it was accidentally put in the wrong place. So in the spirit of organization and efficiency, patterns will no longer be allowed in the User Gallery. I will be going through the 1200+ pix at the end of this week and moving all patterns to the Pattern Library. This will make patterns much easier to find and will streamline the management considerably. I've also seen a number of really wonderful patterns posted in the New Patterns Announcements forum that should have made it to the Pattern Library. Unless these are moved to the Pattern Library, they'll probably get buried in the forums and never cut, which is much too tragic. Good patterns need to be seen and need to be cut. So in effort to get these patterns the exposure they need, we'll be combing through the New Pattern Announcements forums later this week and next week and uploading patterns that didn't make it to the Pattern Library (only the patterns attached to a post will be added. Patterns from 3rd party hosting services will not be added). We'll be using a generic account for this and the name under the pattern will bare the name of a generic admin account. Credit will be given to the pattern designer in the pattern designer field. However, it is better for the designer to upload them themselves so you can get credit in both places (under the picture and in the pattern designer field). So if you have a pattern in the New Pattern Announcements that didn't make it to the Pattern Library, please lend us a hand and upload your patterns. What patterns should be uploaded Pattern Library? Patterns that have a wide appeal really should be posted in the Pattern Library. Use the BB Code to link to your new patterns in the New Pattern Announcements forum (you can find a tutorial on using BB Code here). Custom patterns with narrow appeal (ie, a pattern of Uncle Joe) should be attached to a post using the forum attach function. What can you do to help? This 'transition' is going to take a ton of work. But the way I see it, it is better to get this project done now, than before it gets too big to manage. There is a few things you can do to help; - When you're uploading a pattern (of wide appeal), please upload it to the Pattern Library first, then use the BB Code to link to it in the forums rather than uploading it as an attachment. That way we automatically know if the pattern has been uploaded to the Pattern Library. - When uploading a pattern (of wide appeal), be sure to put it into the New Patterns folder and not in one of your user albums. - If you have patterns in your User Gallery, please move them to the New Patterns folder by clicking the Edit File Information button and choosing New Patterns. - If you have any patterns that have not made it to the Pattern Library, please move it for us. That way you get credit for the pattern in two places (under the thumbnail picture and in the Pattern Designer field). Plus it saves us from moving it for you. Thanks for your help, everybody! Hopefully we'll make it much easier to find the patterns you are looking for!
  11. My brother in law has one that was made years and years ago of his grandfather during the war. I always though they were really neat. I'll have to try my hand at some. Thanks for sharing your website. A great idea with a great niche.
  12. Amazing job on the portrait, Sue! You did a great job on it! I don't always tape in the pieces, but I will put packing tape over the cutouts on top and bottom. That gives pretty good stability too. Love the keychains too. I really like the acrylic. I bet they're less likely to break, too. Nicely done!
  13. You did a wonderful job on that! He'll be thrilled with a new bat and ball, I'd keep that one for yourself! Good job! I think you're going to be quite busy in the near future when everybody sees it. You'll have orders coming out of your ears!
  14. That turned out really cool. I've been eying that pattern too. I have no idea what I'd do with it. But it looks like so much fun to make, I might make it anyway and worry about that later. Nicely done.
  15. Those turned out great! I agree, I love the tear one too. Very cool. Be sure to put copies in your User Gallery too! Nicely done!

That turned out really nice. Great contrast too. Nicely done! Be sure to put a copy in your User Gallery too!
  17. Those turned out wonderful! You did a really nice job on those. Pricing seems to be a tough one. I don't think I can get that kind of money in the market I'm in. But that's where stack cutting comes in. If you cut 3 or 4 of them, you can charge a lot less, and still make decent money for your time. Lower the price, the better chance of moving some product! So if you stack cut 4 of them, and they took you 10 hours, you could sell them for $60 each and still make $24/hr (4x$60=$240/10hrs= $24/hr). Not bad in my book.
  18. It really depends on the project. If it is just a quick cut, I don't use the blower. But for the longer ones, I'll use it. It does an OK job getting rid of the dust, but I still find myself blowing the dust off the old fasioned way. All-in-all, I really like the dust blower. Even though it is sometimes difficult to position it, and if I'm running at lower speeds, doesn't have enough power to get rid of my dust.
  19. Welcome to the Village, Chuck. We're glad you found us. Lots of talented and friendly folks here. I think you'll fit in just fine! I'd love to see some of your work. You can set up a User Gallery (you can find a [tut]tutorial here[/tut]) and show off a little. There are a number of turners here too, so we'd love to see some of your turnings too. Anyway, welcome aboard. Jump on in and have some fun!
  20. Hi Vector01 It is backed with leather, I buy old leather just for my Portraits Ithink it gives a bit more texture than just using a black backer.. Neat idea. I never thought of leather. I use to design props for Theatre/TV/Films and I would often go to 2nd hand shops looking for leather coats to cut up. $5 could get you some really good leather for projects. I'll have to steal....errr....keep that in mind for my next project.
  21. Ahhh....goch-cha. You're right, our Facebook page does need to be much more visible. Right now it is only in my signature. I'll put a link on our front page next week. As far as other links. Well, that's the tricky thing about online communities. Everything is constantly evolving and it would be a fulltime job indexing the links. With that said, we do have a few tools at our disposal. I'll start with the easiest. Bookmarking is something every web browser offers. I bookmark everything (almost to a fault). In Internet Explorer go to Favorites>Add To Favorites. This way if there is a URL that you want to remember, it will always be there for you. Another option is using our Search function in the upper right corner of the forum. That will certainly hone in on what you were looking for. It works pretty well, but sometimes you have to wade through alot of irrelavent stuff to get what you're looking for. One cool feature of this forum, is that you have your own personal bookmarks available. If you're reading a forum, at the bottom of the screen in the tan box, you'll see a Bookmark Topic. If it is a thread you're interested in revisiting in the future, click this button to remember the thread. You can find your bookmarked topics in your User Control Panel (top left of the forum in the tan box). On the first page (Overview tab), you'll see a link that says Manage Bookmarks. This is where all of your bookmarked topics reside. Lastly, we have a Wiki. This takes a bit more effort. This is an information resource for all things scroll saw related. So if you're interested in compound cutting, and you found a cool thread that has a great demonstration of compound cutting, you can add a link to it in the Compound Cutting wiki article. This is what the wiki is designed to do; pull together all of the great info available to scrollers. The wiki can be edited by anybody, so don't feel like an admin has to add it. If you think it belongs, add it. It is only with the help of the entire community that the wiki becomes powerful. With that said, if there's something specific everybody is looking for, I'd be happy to figure out a solution.
  22. Hrmmm....I'm not sure if I'm following. Could you give me an example?
  23. Hi Edward. The SSG videos are in flash, so you'll have to update that. If you'd like to download the QT or MP4, check out this thread. It explains how you can download the videos to your computer. I hope this helps!
  24. I guess a better term would be Character. Here are some terms that I came up with that would make a great wiki page as well: * Bark * Birdseye * Burl * Curly * Figured * Flame * Fleck * Heartwood * Quilted * Rays * Sapwood * Spalted * Tiger Am I missing anything else?
  25. Wow, that is an amazing list, Blame. You're right Chris, that would make an awesome Wiki entry. You can call it Wood defects. If the info has been lifted from the net, we probably should reword the info and/or add to it. Does anybody want to tackle that project? Chris? Blame? Anybody else? Yah, I was looking for common terms that describe desirable 'defects' like burl. Not many woodworkers are looking for cupped wood. But spalted wood is highly saught after. I'm working on a new project I think many of you'll enjoy. I can't say too much right now since I'm still ironing out the bugs. Right now I have Spalted, Curly, Burl. I'm adding Figured, Tiger, and Birdseye. Am I missing anything?
