  1. Olive wood would look really pretty. I've seen turned bottle stoppers made of that. Very pretty.
  2. For those who do portrait style cuttings, what project size do you prefer working in? I usually work 8x10" so I can use a pre-constructed frame.
  3. I've heard olive oil may go rancid after awhile. I know a lot of people avoid using it on cutting boards. I don't have experience with it though. Butcher block or salad bowl oil is used a lot in food grade items. A lot of times you can find them at the grocery store. I also find it at the Big Box home improvement stores in with their other oil finishes.
  4. Sure. His site is at http://scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com. He has so many great projects there. Definitely worth checking out.
  5. Well, you shouldn't have to wait long because they're on the truck as we speak. Two books will be on your doorstep by Feb 20. The other book is back-ordered, so it'll take a week or two for that to show up. I hope you enjoy the books. I really like the 1500 Ornamental Designs book.
  6. I wonder if porous woods like red oak would be a problem. Bacteria might get into the pours. But then again, I suppose if you finish it with an oil, it might not be an issue. Hrmmm...
  7. That is really cool. You did an awesome job on that. I like your wood choice too. Nicely done!
  8. I think maple would make a pretty spoon. Especially if you go with a highly figured maple like tiger maple or bird's eye maple. I think Cherry would make an awesome spoon too.
  9. Hi Brian, Welcome aboard. We're glad to have ya. I'm still trying to master scroll sawing too...LOL. I'm not quite sure what paper burning is. Unless it refers to starting a campfire, which I've only had mixed results. I've been to Scotland once for a few days. I spent Thanksgiving there. You wouldn't think it, but Thanksgiving isn't that popular outside of the US...LOL I ended up having pizza instead. Beautiful country, though. I'd like to go back and really explore the countryside. Anyway, welcome to the village. I look forward to seeing some of your work!
  10. Get a few extra saws and maybe they can join you! That sounds really neat, though. I could just imagine having the saw under a shade tree, sipping a lemonade, and making a bit of sawdust. Sounds like the good life to me.
  11. That turned out great! That would be fun to have around Christmas time. I bet it would make a great gift too. I'd like to give segmentation a try this summer. I've seen some use leather dyes to color the wood. The colors are so vibrant, it really is amazing. Did you use just regular craft paint for that, or did you do something else? Very cool, at any rate. Be sure to upload that to your User's Gallery too! I think a lot of people would get a kick out of that!
  12. You're right. In that issue, some of the parts didn't print properly in the insert. You can find the corrections here, though. If you're interested, there are several articles on SSG on wooden gear clocks. Lots of cool designs available out there.
  13. I'm happy to announce that our little contest is officially over and its time to announce the winner. We were giving away a Pattern Designer's Pack. The pack includes 3 clipart books from Dover Publishing (Big Book of Silhouettes, Ready-to-Use Sports Silhouettes, 1500 Decorative Ornaments). It was a fun way to launch the new website and I think it was quite a success. If you remember, entry was as simple as posting in the contest thread. You can get additional entries by posting pictures to your User Gallery or patterns to the Pattern Library. Each person had the chance to get a toatal of 5 entries. So, here's what we ended up with. We had 74 people enter the contest with a total of 156 entries. I used a random number generator to pick our winner. I chose a winner and 2 runner-ups. So if the lucky winner doesn't contact me in 10 days, the prize moves to the second runner up. If they don't contact me, the 3rd, blah blah blah. OK. Can I get a drum roll please.....And the Winner Is.... AirNationalGuardMom justjimmyb is our first runner up tazman4647 is our second runner up Congratulations! Claiming Your Prize: Just shoot me a PM with your mailing address! That's it! Please don't post your mailing address in this thread. We like to keep your private information just that, private. The runner ups should contact me too with their info too, just in case the winner doesn't contact me in 10 days. That way we can get the prize pack mailed out right away.
  14. This Contest is officially closed. I want to thank all those who participated. It was a fun way to kick off the new website!
  15. Happy Valentine's Day!
  16. Welcome Rick! I think you'll have a good time here. Lots of great people here. That's the great thing about scrolling, there are so many different things you can do with such a simple tool. So if threading a blade through hundreds of holes isn't your thing, there's so many other options! Since you're into gears, have you tried making a wooden clock? Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts had a great pattern for a wooden gear clock awhile back. Its definitely on my cut list. I was going to attempt it this summer, but it might go on the back burner. Anyway, welcome aboard. We're glad to have ya!
  17. Well, I got one of my goals done this weekend...I framed my squirrel. Last weekend I cut Clayton's Squirrel pattern. Cut from 1/4" BB Ply with a #3 FD spiral. I wanted to use a propane torch to burn off the 'fuzzies', but when I went to Harbor Freight, they didn't have any. So I resorted to a lighter instead. Note to self: don't do that again. There was a lot of carbon residue in the fretwork. Ugg. Other than that, it cut pretty well. I added a highlight to the eye, but everything else was the pattern. Thanks Clayton! It was a lot of fun to cut.
  18. That guy cracks me up. Nicely done. I hope your neighbors aren't shy...LOL. Good job!
  19. Wow. Life isn't boring in your neck of the woods. Sounds like you were pulled in a lot of different directions. I hope your BIL is doing well. Pneumonia is a serious thing. But its certainly a good sign when they think you're well enough to go home. He's lucky to have family so close that they can take care of you when you're down. I've never been through a tornado. They don't happen much up north. I really like watching those Storm Chaser tv shows. Man, those guys are crazy! I think I'm OK with seeing a tornado on TV in the comfort of my living room instead of in real life. Anyway, we're glad to have you back!
  20. Well, we have a 3 day weekend here, and wouldn't you know it, there's a snow storm moving in. I guess its a good excuse to play with the saw a bit. I cut Clayton's squirrel pattern last weekend and hope to frame it up. I also started my Einstein portrait. I'm hoping to get that framed up too. I'm not quite sure what to work on next, though. Kerry's Shatnerportrait seems to be calling my name, but I also have some of Steve Good's projects I'd like to try, too. Hrmmm... Darn my indecision! Anybody else got some scrolling ambitions this weekend?
  21. Hi Don, We're glad to have you on board. I'm glad you like the new digs. I've really enjoyed your album. Scrolling is perfect for scouting. Not only the pinewood derby (which I've placed a few times when I was a scout), but for other woodcrafting too. From roughing out blanks for carved tie slides, to basic woodworking. Plus its about as safe of a power tool you can find. I bet you could even come up with a tie slide pattern exclusively made on a scroll saw. That would be really cool. The kids would really get a kick out of that. I look forward to when my son is old enough for scouts. That would be a lot of fun. Besides, it'll give me one more excuse to buy more tools.
  22. Hi Paul, I'm glad you got the signature to work. There are a lot of cool features in the User Control Panel. I really enjoyed your gallery. I especially like your fantasy pics. The Yoda is awesome. I have the wizard and owl in my cut list, too. I look forward to cutting it, especially after seeing yours. Great job on all your cuttings!

    Hello All

Hiya Twitchy, We're glad to have you on board! What part of NW are you? I'm located in MT. Not Pacific NW, but NW jsut-the-same. I hope you enjoy the site. There are a lot of great people here. I can't wait to see some of your work! Enjoy!
  24. Wow. Those are great. The first picture I saw was the eagle feather one. That turned out awesome. I love the design. Then I saw your Valentine's cutting. I think you definitely have a winner there. Your better half will love it! Nicely done on both projects.
  25. Welcome to the website. I'm glad you enjoy it. I can't wait to see some more of your work. The stuff in your gallery is really nice. I especially like the crosses. Are you selling your stuff currently? Where do you sell your scrollworks? I've always wanted to sell some of my stuff on the side, but life is much to busy right now. Maybe someday, though. I know several people that has had good luck with Etsy.com. If I ever sell, I'll probably start there. That way I don't have to maintain a large inventory. Anyway, welcome to the village. There are lots of great people here and we're glad to have you on board!
