  1. Wow. That looks great! How wide of poplar did you end up using? Was it just regular 1x6"? I've had my eye on that book too. How do you like it? Good job on the cutting!
  2. Wow, those turned out great! Be sure to put those in your User Gallery too! you did an awesome job on those. I really like how the Elvis portrait turned out. The way the wood grain almost followed the contour of his right cheek is awesome! The wood grain in the sky of the lighthouse scene also looks like clouds. Very nice cuttings! Good job!
  3. Hi Gordie, Welcome to the Village. I'm glad you found a few patterns to add to your collection. In order to print, select the thumbnail picture you want to print. This will take you to a screen that shows a larger picture, along with some details. If you click that medium picture, it will open another window with the full size picture. From there, if you hold down the Ctrl button and hit P (for print), you should be able to print that larger picture. For resizing pictures, some printers have the ability to increase/decrease the size of the printing. Or you can take it to a copy shop and have them resize it. You can also resize a picture in a graphics program. In fact, I'll be posting a video tutorial on Scroll Saw Goodies on how to prepare a pattern for printing using a program called Inkscape. Check back tomorrow and I'll post the video here too. I hope this helps. Let us know if you're still having trouble. BTW-My Dad's name is Gordie too. You don't see that name too often.
  4. I've added several new definitions to the glossary. It looks like some has added a few terms as well! Thanks to all that have contributed. We're still have a ways to go before this project is complete, but it looks like we're off to a good start. Take a look of what we have already! And if you see a term, jump on in! You can find the glossary here: [wiki]Glossary[/wiki]
  5. Those turned out great! I bet the crown/name design was a huge hit. My niece would love something like that. I really like the pink backer too on the birth announcement plaque. Adds a lot of personality to it! You did a great job on it! The police badge is pretty slick too. My buddy is a police officer in Texas. I should do one for him. Is that a gift for someone? I think they'll love it. Nicely done on all 3 projects!
  6. One of the magazines (I'm not sure which one) someone made a rounding jig. Basically, they took a 2x4 and used a forsner bit to drill a hole. Then with the bandsaw or scroll saw, cut the wood in half so you have 2 boards, each with a half circle. Then they glue sandpaper to the half circle. They basically put that jig behind the blade and it makes it easy to round the back of the blade. Pretty neat.
  7. Wow, Tina! You work fast. That turned out awesome! You should create a User's Gallery and put a copy there (you can find a tutorial here). That's certainly something to be proud of. Good job!
  8. It's Wiki Wednesday! Isn't that exciting!? Basically each Wednesday I'll be offering something new for the Scroll Saw Wiki. Right now, I'm doing a video series on Scroll Saw Goodies that will show you some of the basics when it comes to wikis. Hopefully we can dispel some of the wiki intimidation. I'm also going to highlight a wiki article each week that could use some love. So if you can help out, we'll be eternally grateful! So this week's wiki love goes to the [wiki]Glossary[/wiki]! We need more scroll saw terms. Even if you don't know the definition, throw it out there and someone can fill int he information later. Even if the term is silly, if its scroll saw related, we should list it. And now for this weeks video, the Scroll Saw Wiki Tour:

    Hello

Hi Jo! Welcome to the Village. You'll have a great time here. Lots of friendly folks and talented too! I look forward to seeing your collapsable basket. You can find a tutorial on how to create a User Gallery here. I've been meaning to try my hand at those collapsable baskets for awhile now. I think they look pretty cool, but trying to get the angle just right seems kinda tricky. But I guess you don't know until you try... What kind of wood do you use for your baskets? Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying the site. Jump in and have some fun.
  10. Those are really good tips! Sounds like it works pretty well for you. Thanks Mal!
  11. I agree. That bulldog is outstanding! I think my favorite is the Black Lab, though. Those dogs have so much expression in their face. Nicely done!
  12. I got this one in under the wire! This was a Claddagh and Shamrock I designed. You can find the pattern here. I ended up using spacers behind the Claddagh to give it a bit of dimension. Unfortunately, this was the only St. Patty's day decor I got to this year. I guess there's always next year.
  13. Yah, I did the same. Lost my dust collector, but at least I can reach the blade clamp. Great observation! I'm going to take a look at my saw too and see if it'll work better! Thanks Grampedstl!
  14. I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if they're made by the same company. It seems like Craftsman farms out much of their work anymore.
  15. Thanks for the info. Maybe a primer would be the way to go. You think a spray-on primer would work? I'm looking for ways to speed up the process. I'm guessing spray-on primer would go on too thin.
  16. Thanks for the info! That looks like a really great saw. I have a feeling you'll be making sawdust with it for quite awhile! You certainly can't beat the price! I love the fact it comes with a scroll saw stand, too. I wish mine did. For those interested, I've added some info about the CW40 to the wiki. You can find it at: [wiki]Hitachi CW40[/wiki]
  17. That's a nice thought. I need to make something for my neighbor. He's an AMAZING gardener and he's pretty helpful with advice (and sharing his harvest ). I'll have to find something good. He's a salesman, so I'd love to turn a nice pen for him....'course I need a lathe first...LOL.
  18. Great idea! I never thought of that.
  19. Those turned out great! I really like the black one. The pattern has a lot of energy. Plus I like asymmetrical designs. Good job!
  20. I know you've done quite a few of those angels. They look great. Do you sell them? Or do you give them away?
  21. I have a project I think eveybody will be able to help out with. I want to create a glossary of terms related to the scroll saw and scroll sawing. I know when I first started, people used terms I had NO idea what they meant. It would be nice if we had a section that defines these terms. So if you know of a term (you don't even have to know the definition), share it in this thread. Or, if you're adventurous, feel free to add it to the wiki! If you see a term in this thread that hasn't been added, feel free to add it (wink wink, nudge nudge). You can find the wiki page here: [wiki]Glossary[/wiki] Lets try to keep the definition fairly concise. We can expand it with an individual article to flush out more detail. I'll start: BLO - Boiled Linseed Oil BB - Baltic Birch Ply - Plywood Plywood - a lamination of multiple thin wood veneers usually glued at right angles to create a stable wood product.
  22. I've read in several places that people who paint their projects use Sanding Sealer. I'm not sure what this is. Could someone tell me what it is, how to use it, and where to find it? I do a fair amount of painted projects, but haven't had great results. Maybe this is what I need.
  23. Wow. That turned out great! Did you cut that out of a single piece of wood? I really like how the painted pieces turned out. That might be a good way for me to try my hand at intarsia/segmentation without investing into a lot in wood. Hrmmmmm....the wheels are turning. Good job! You should create a User's Gallery and put a copy there (you can find a tutorial here). I'd love to see some more of your work.
  24. Those other cuttings turned out great too! I really like the solid oak. I cut 1/8" oak ply and it does OK. But that solid, thicker oak really looks sharp! Nicely done! I'm glad you liked the Photoshop tutorial. I'll be doing more of those in the future. I'd like to give Elements a try and see how that works. Hopefully I could do a tutorial on that too. Keep up the good work! You really have a knack for portraits.
  25. Boy, that turned out awesome! I love the wood choice. I like how you modified the trailer to hold stuff. Very clever. Someday I'll try one of those patterns from Toys and Joys. They have such great patterns. You did such a nice job on that. Good job!
