Last month's Scroll Saw Challenge was a lot of fun. Some really cool projects came about. It was so much fun, I'd thought we'd try it again. This one will take a bit of creativity. The theme this month is: Giving Thanks This is completely open to interpretation. It could be a traditional Thanksgiving project. Or maybe a gift of appreciation for someone. A sentiment you want to express. Post your pictures here. It can be a finished project or a pattern you designed. Get the creative juices flowing and have fun! I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Ornaments For Charity Pattern Drive - 2017

We've got 3 so far. We need 7 more designers. The eBook will benefit those in need by donations received from folks who download the eBook and decide to keep it. It's a great way to give a helping hand this Holiday season doing what you love. Here's who committed so far: Travis Montserrat meflick - Received Who else is in? -
I just heard Carter Johnson just passed away. My deepest condolences to his family. He was a super nice guy and always helpful. I've talked to him a number of times and very generous with his time and advice. He did these amazing freehand puzzles. I've always admired his skill and patience. He even sent me one of his signature postage stamp puzzles, which I still have to this day. Here's an article on Carter Johnson that was in SSW&C. http://scrollsawer.com/2009/09/10/puzzlemaster-carter-johnson/ He will be missed.

Since we started this, the goal was to get 10 designers each year. We get soooooo close, but never quite there. Can we do it this year? Will this be the year we get 10 designers? If so, that means we'll have 50 new ornaments to add to our eBook this year. How awesome would that be? I'm designing. Who else is in? -
Halloween is over and Christmas is right around the corner. Scrollers are starting to think about gifts and patterns to cut for loved ones. But since the Holiday season is also about helping others in need, we're continuing our tradition here at Scroll Saw Village as a way to give back. This will be our 8th year of publishing an e-Book full of Christmas ornaments. This popular e-Book was featured in the Holiday 2014 issue of Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts magazine. Our ornaments designs are exclusive to this eBook and designed by SSV members. Anyone are can download the ebook in exchange for a donation to their favorite charity. Our hope is that we'd be able to raise some money for very worthy causes, and provide some cool patterns at the same time. But we need your help! I'll need some volunteers to design some ornaments. Each designer will provide 5 patterns (no more, no less) I ask that the designs are not made available anywhere else (this gives value to the e-book) They have to be designed specifically by you (no posting other people's patterns) Designs must be emailed (or PM) to Travis by Wednesday, November 22rd (info below) A few things to keep in mind: Religious and secular designs are accepted. Other religions/traditions also celebrate this time of year, so lets not forget them. Keep detail and size appropriate for an ornament. Don't submit copyrighted or licensed patterns. The due date will sneak up on you quicker than you think. Get them to me ASAP. What do you get in exchange? Credit for your design. The warm fuzzy feeling that you're helping others in need. Submitting your ornaments: Email the ornaments directly to Travis (travis [at] scrollsawvillage.com) or PM me. Formats accepted are JPG, PNG. Please keep the pattern in black & White only (no gray) . That way I can convert them easier when putting together the ebook. I'll also accept Inkscape files (SVG). This is ideal if you know how to use Inkscape. That way there is no conversion.

Howdy All. I thought it would be fun to start incorporating some Scroll Saw Challenges on SSV. So let's start off with a Halloween challenge! The theme for this challenge is "Halloween." Post your Halloween themed finished project, or a pattern you designed here. The theme is open to interpretation. You can post something spooky, harvest, or fall related project. When you post it, say a little something about it. Maybe a little story related to the project, what inspiration you took, materials or techniques used. It doesn't have to be elaborate. But it's nice to read a little about a project and seeing the picture or pattern. I'll start. I went back to MT recently and my dad got a new DeWalt scroll saw. I've been looking at upgrading mine (an old craftsman 16") and I figured I'd try his out to see how well I like the DeWalt. I picked this pattern from SSWW&C to test it out. It was a fun project. I dabbed craft paint on the surface, leaving the inside cuts raw wood. Then I used antiquing paste wax to distress it a bit. You can find the pattern here: http://scrollsawer.com/2017/08/01/nr-festive-jack-o-lanterns/

Be safe everyone. Please heed any evacuation orders. Irma looks angry and not in a forgiving mood.

Hi All. Thanks to everybody who filled out the SSV survey. I found it very helpful. This helps me identify areas of improvement and other areas which I probably shouldn't mess with. Thanks! You guys are awesome!
-
Yup. You did it correct. Basically the User Gallery is a container that holds all of the personal albums for members. Just look for your username in the User Gallery and that's where your pictures reside. BTW...I really like your dragon design. And that horse is fantastic!

Thanks for the suggestion, Blame. We have the Works in Progress forum which is meant for both progression pictures and formal tutorials. Handi created a nice video on pattern application not too long ago. Hopefully we can get a few more tutorials posted too! So if you got an idea, show us how its done! Wink wink, nudge nudge.

Hi Blame, That would be great if you could put together some articles. Especially on the basics and machine maintenance. You'd be surprised how difficult it is to find some of the basic information. It would be a great help for those who are just starting in the hobby. The goal of this website is to have information freely available and accessible (and having a little fun in the process). We really want to bring in and encourage new and seasoned scrollers, alike. So the more information we have, the better! With that being said, I'm working on a new feature that I'm really excited about. I probably won't unveil it until late Feb or the beginning of March. But I think everybody will really enjoy it (and you'll certainly get a kick out of it). But mum's the word for now. As far as our other obsessions. I'd certainly be OK with adding a forum discussing other forms of woodworking. Since this is primarily a scroll saw website, I'd probably limit it to a single forum for general woodworking talk. I think most scrollers dabble in other forms of woodworking, whether it be turning, toy making, furniture building, pyrography, tole painting, etc. It would be a fun way to discuss our other hobbies! So if there's enough interest, I can get 'er done.

I've added a tutorial to the Articles section under Using SSV. You can find that here:

OK. It took some doing, but I think I got it figured out so you can buy several months at a time instead of going monthly. First, you'll have to upgrade to a monthly plan and checkout like normal. So this will purchase the first month. The upgrade might even be free because many times there is a credit to your account when you switch to a monthly plan. Here's how to upgrade to a different plan: To upgrade to a different plan, go to your Manage Purchases. Find your active supporter badge and click the Manage button. Right below the product information is the Upgrade/Downgrade link. That will allow you to upgrade/downgrade your plan to another one. Here's how to buy several months at a time: After you upgraded and you want to buy several months in advanced, go to your Manage Purchases. and click the Renew Now button. From here, you can choose how many months you'd like to renew for. (You can also do this same thing for a yearly membership too) It's also worth noting that these new memberships will auto-renew. If at any time you want to cancel the auto-renew, you can go to your Manage Purchases. Click the Manage button. Then below picture, there is a Cancel Renewals button. Click that to cancel your auto-renewals. Don't worry, I'm going to put this tutorial in the Articles section. If at any time you want to manage your SSV Patron account, click the Support SSV tab on the top navigation bar and choose Manage Patron Account, then choose Manage Purchases.

It depends on how it was sent. If you bought a supporter badge, the badge would show up. But I know several folks sent in a donation to help with the server move. If that was the case, shoot me a PM and I'll transfer so it shows up as a supporter badge. It's nice to have the supporter badge. Not only does it give you recognition for supporting our awesome group, but it has a few other pirks like turning off advertisements and a few other bells and whistles.
-
I don't think it's that cut and dry. Let me see if I can figure that out. There's gotta be a solution.

I got a couple questions regarding upgrading. You DON'T have to wait for your current subscription to expire before switching. You can change at any time. Your account will be credited and you'll only be charged difference between the plans. To upgrade to a different plan, go to your Manage Purchases. Find your active supporter badge and click the Manage button. Right below the product information is the Upgrade/Downgrade link. That will allow you to upgrade/downgrade your plan to another one. It's important that you upgrade your plan this way. Adding a plan to your cart and checking out will add the plan IN ADDITION to your previous plan. If anybody runs into any trouble, please let me know. I'm happy to get things sorted out.

You can renew your Patron account here: http://www.scrollsawvillage.com/clients/ It's also located under the Support SSV tab at the top of the screen in case you need to find it again. Howdy all. We've been on our new server for 3 months now. Everything seems to be working well. I've been monitoring our server usage, and we're in the green! So that's great news. Thanks everybody for your patience as I went through these severe growing pains. Naturally, when a little site like SSV begins to grow, things get more complicated and considerably more expensive. @Scrappile suggested a good idea in offering different levels of support for SSV patrons. So I thought I'd give it a try and see how it goes. I have created 3 levels of support for SSV Patrons; Bronze, Silver, and Gold. The 3 levels offer the exact same benefits. The only difference is the supporter title and the color of the supporter badge below your avatar. Bronze is $10/year and is the same one we've always had (still says SSV Patron). Silver is $3/month (cost of a cup of good coffee). Gold is $5/month (cost of a cup of fancy Starbucks coffee). I'm using a new payment processor that can handle recurring payments. So these new subscriptions will auto-pay until you cancel it. So you don't have to worry about trying to remember to resubscribe. None of the credit card information is stored on my server and I don't have visibility into your information. Payments are processed by Stripe which is embedded into SSV. You can upgrade and downgrade your plans at any time. Upgrades will charge the prorated difference between the two plans. Downgrades are also prorated with the difference given as account credit. I'm going to give this a try for awhile. If it becomes more trouble than it's worth, I'll revert back to the old way. But if it does work, it is a nice way to pitch in a few extra bucks to cover the cost of running SSV. If you're interested in becoming an SSV Patron, or you want to upgrade, you can find the new badges here. Thank you everybody for your continued support! I really appreciate it.

I've had good luck with 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. The trick is to spray the back of your paper, then spray the wood you want to attach it to, wait unitl both become tacky like a Post It Note, then apply. Use a credit card to work out the bubbles. I spray it with clear acrylic spray for some added protection. I've used this technique on tray puzzles for kids and it held up pretty well over the years of use and abuse.

Translate: Thanks for the advice! I will learn from your advice!

For those who have the Jet, I think I read that you lose about 1/4" of the depth of cut/stroke because of the way it was designed. Have you noticed if it impacted you at all? I'd imagine it'd affect those who like doing compound cutting.

What browser are you using?

I'm not seeing anything unusual either. What browser are you using? Maybe something got hung up. Have you tried rebooting your computer?
