  6. Well, that's embarrassing. Scroll all the way to the bottom and you'll see our normal set. I think at the top of the list is your most frequently used emoticons and emojis.
  7. Nope. They're still around. The trophies under your avatar on the forums was causing some issues yesterday, so I turned off the display. But they're still available on your profile. I'm updating some software this week. I'm hoping the update will fix my issues and I"ll turn on the display again.
  8. Go to Lowes or Home Depot and look for select pine stair treads. I think those are 1" thick. I used one for a cabinet top just recently and worked pretty well. See if that works for you.
  9. May is a month for Mom, because she deserves more than just a day. This month's challenge is to make something for Mom. This can be for your mom, wife, or special lady in your life. If none of these apply, how about some May flowers? Post your project below. It'll be fun to see what you come up with.
  10. Took me awhile, but here is my shop tour.
  11. These Easter Bunny Peeps and Carrots are a perfect addition to an Easter Basket or centerpiece. This is a quick and easy project you can knock out in a couple of hours. Enjoy the video! Step 1 I printed out the pattern. Then I cut out the pattern to rough size. I attached it to some 3/4" poplar with some spray adhesive. Step 2 I didn't use a pattern for the carrots. I wanted them to be a little un-uniform. So I roughly drew out each shape onto a 6" board. Don't worry if you can't draw, carrots are basically long triangles. The carrot shape doesn’t have to be perfect. Step 3 I used a #5 scroll reverse blade on the scroll saw to cut out my shapes. Step 4 I sanded with 120 grit to remove the fuzzies and soften the edges. Step 5 Then, with a rotary tool, I add some simple details to the carrots. Just little gouges in the side to indicate the ridges of the carrots. Again, no need to be perfect. Step 6 I used a sanding mop (also called a star sander) on my drill press to soften the edges. Step 7 Paint the bunnies and carrots with bright colored craft paints. These are just cheap paints you can find at a craft store for a dollar or two. Dip the back-end of your paintbrush into black paint and just dab a dot in for the eyes and nose. If you want to order a nice kit, check this one out. Step 8 Cut craft store felt for the carrot leaves. I didn't use a pattern. Just long triangles to make them look like leaves of the carrot. I used two different colors of felt for a bit of variety. Step 9 Tack the felt to the end of the carrots with a brass nail. The brass really makes it sparkle. Final Project
  12. It's OK. Those that like them can enjoy them. Those who don't can ignore them. Besides, the trophy dump is over. In order for the trophy/medal system to be put into place, the backlog had to be filled. From here on out, trophies and medals are only given at the time of earning them. So now your notifications aren't filled with a backlog of trophies.
  13. What a fun thread! I'm loving it! Keep em comin! @MrsN The shop class reminds me very much of the one I was in when I was in Jr High. So much fun! @trackman I used to have that train plaque in my bedroom growing up. Had it for many many years! Boy, that brought back memories.
  14. Either YouTube or Facebook video. For YouTube, you can keep it "Unlisted" and it won't show up for people unless they have the link. For FB, I think you have to have permissions to show the video publicly. I think there's a button next to the date of your post where you can change who can see it. Choose Public before posting the link here. It will only change the privacy for that one post. I thin you might be able to share it on SSV's FB page and maybe link it here. Not sure, though. I haven't tried it. We also support Vimeo.
  15. Howdy All. The calendar tells me it's spring, but the weather doesn't seem to agree. Regardless, it's time to get into the shop! I know I love seeing shop pics. I don't know what it is about them. I just love seeing how other people work. So, this month's challenge is to share pictures of your shop...mess and all. Share a pic of your workshop. Multiple pics are encouraged. Or, if you're so inclined, h'bout a shop tour video!? It doesn't have to be fancy. When you post, tell us a little something about it. What you like or don't like about the shop? What improvements would you like to make? What kind of work do you typically do? Any unique setups that make your work easier? I think this will be a fun challenge. I can't wait to peek inside your world. Have Fun!
  16. On SSV, there is an autosave, but I wouldn't depend on it. But if you click into a new message, at the bottom of the compose screen it will ask if you want to restore your previous content.
  17. Sorry. I didn't mean to pat you on the back so hard.
  18. Here's my submission. Some Easter Peeps and wooden carrots last weekend. I made a fun little promo video for SSV's Facebook page showing the process. Super easy project that can be knocked out in an hour. You can find a free pattern here: http://bit.ly/2pyXzIk
  19. Better late than never. I'm back-filling in Trophies. So this is just the tip of the iceberg for folks who have been around SSV for awhile.
  20. There has been a lot of confusion around the very popular Excalibur scroll saw. They disappeared for awhile without any word. Then several saws started showing up that looked like the Excalibur, but all under different names. It turns out there was a bunch of movement between brand rights, design rights, and distribution rights that gets a little sticky. Peter Kennedy from King Canada helped shed a little light on how all of this shakes out. Hopefully you'll find it interesting and understand this confusing topic a little bit better. - - - - - - - - - - Hi Travis, thanks for getting back to me. I will try to make this as simple and painless as possible. It is very convoluted so I think point form time lines will tell the story best. My biggest concern is scroll saw enthusiasts, knowing the reputation of the original Excalibur scroll saw, will be unaware it is still available as well as parts and help if required. Please note, my dates may be off by a bit but you will get the idea as to how things have evolved. FYI, King Canada is the largest supplier of wood and metal working machinery in Canada. We are almost 40 years old and are just now entering the US market. 1982 - Somerville Design introduces the Excalibur scroll saws manufactured in Toronto Ontario 2003 – General International acquires the assets of Summerville Design including the Excalibur brand. G.I. sends the 21” scroll saw to Taiwan to be manufactured and adds the 30” version. 2008 + or – G.I. adds the 16” version. 2010 – EX-21 awarded “Editor’s Choice” by Scroll Saw Woodworking and Crafts magazine. 2012 - the EX-21AE 30th anniversary edition is introduced. 1000 units available. Color changed from green to black and dust collection added to the table, stand and foot switch are included. 2012-13 – G.I. goes back to the models EX-16, EX-21 and Ex-30 retaining the black color and other Anniversary options on all saws. No more General green.. 2014 + or – G.I. is sold to DMT holdings of Seattle WA. Including the Excalibur brand but not the manufacturing rights for the scroll saw. They are held by the manufacturer in Taiwan. 2015-16 - JPW (Jet)designs their 22” saw and has it manufactured by the same Taiwan maker as the original Excalibur saws. 2016 + or – The original Taiwanese manufacturer seeks new North American distribution for the original design scroll saws. 2016 – King Canada is granted distribution rights to the original 16”, 21” and 30” saws for the Canadian market. They are branded Excelsior in Canada and King Industrial in the U.S. 2016 - Due to design similarities of the Jet 22”, the manufacturer restricts King’s U.S. distribution to the 16” and the 30” versions. 2016 – Woodcraft commits to national U.S. distribution of the King Industrial 16” and 30” scroll saws. 2017 – Seyco introduces their version of the saw manufactured by the same maker as the Excalibur, Excelsior, King Industrial and the JPW saws. 2017 - The European saws Azxminster, Pegas Etc., are all made by the same Taiwanese maker. These saws were previously supplied to them by G.I. 2018 + or - General International (DMT Holdings) begins to market a Chinese made version of the 21” saw under the Excalibur name and model number. Summary, The only original Excalibur saws are now branded either King Industrial (U.S.) or Excelsior (Canada). At this time, there is no original design 21” available in the U.S. The Seyco and the JPW (Jet)saws are designed after the Excalibur saws with proprietary differences. So, the King Industrial/Excelsior saws are the original design with a different name and the saw branded Excalibur is a different saw with the original name. The many manufacturing nuances and extreme tolerances make these saws virtually impossible to copy and have them function as they were originally designed. Note, when I use the term “original”, I refer to original manufacturer, original design, original components, parts, motors, and specifications. North American Model #’s Original EX-16 is now Excelsior XL-16 in Canada Original EX-16 is now King Industrial KXL-16 in the U.S. Original EX-21 is now Excelsior XL-21 in Canada (not available in the U.S.) Original EX-30 is now Excelsior XL-30 in Canada Original EX-30 is now King Industrial KXL-30 in the U.S. General still uses model #EX-21, “made in China” on the box and 16” or 30’ no longer available. Seyco Model ST-21, 21” no other sizes available to my knowledge Jet Model #727299K, 22” no other sizes available to my knowledge I hope this gives some clarity to the situation.
  21. I haven't noticed any popups, but ads that show up depends on the user. Google tracks history and try to display ads that would be most applicable. But the "Win" something on Amazon sounds a bit sketchy. Amazon doesn't do that. But, if you do go to Amazon, then to another website, they might show an ad of something you were looking at on Amazon as an ad. But nothing like what you're describing. I'm not sure if you're experiencing it on other sites. But you might want to scan your system. There are browser hijackers that do things like that. I never heard of it on a phone, though. SSV does earn revenue from advertising. That's one of the ways we keep our lights on. Basically, we get paid for certain amount of ad impressions. Some ads are pay per click and get a little extra. Google controls those ads, though. SSV doesn't determine the ads. What a great segway. If anybody wants to support SSV and turn off the Google Ads, become a SSV Patron. It has a few other pirks too. You can find more information here.
  22. Here's a little fun science behind communities. It's called the 90, 9, 1 rule. Basically it says: 90% of the people are media consumers (lurkers). They read posts, look at pictures or patterns, but they don't participate. 9% are media participants. They answer threads, comment on pictures, and maybe hit that heart icon. 1% are media creators. They're the ones who will start new threads, upload pictures or patterns, write articles or tutorials, etc. So if we figure that only our 9% group and 1% group are posters on SSV, there is a whole 90% out there that may have the same question, but hasn't spoken up. We want to help them too. I think it's important for someone looking for an answer to do some leg work so they can find the most robust information from different points of view. That way they can make an informed decision on which saw to buy, what wood to use, which technique to implement, etc to get the results they want. But it's also important that they feel OK to ask a question. I've been a member of some forums where people are petrified to ask a question. What a terrible place that was to be. I want to make sure we don't fall into the trap of the default answer to a question is "Use The Search." (I don't think we're anywhere near that, though.) It's true that many of the same questions get asked a lot. But there's only so many subjects that can be discussed without overlapping or repeating. Its also good to recognize that while some of the questions may look similar, they might be asking in a slightly different way or looking at it from a different angle. A search may answer the general question, but not the specific question. I try to answer them the best I can. If I don't have much to offer, I move on to the next thread. If there is a previous thread would answer the answer perfectly, link it to them. That is hugely helpful and may help the next person that has the same question. We've been blessed with an amazingly helpful and friendly community of like minded folks. It warms my heart to know that is what SSV is known for. I love the fact that people can ask questions and get advice from people who've been scrolling for 40 years and from people who started yesterday. That is really cool. Keep asking! Keep helping! Keep scrolling!
  23. @MrsN You should post those to the Pattern Library. We have a section for jewelry patterns. That would make an awesome addition. Here's a few others that are in the Pattern Library: http://www.scrollsawvillage.com/gallery/category/10-jewelry/
