  1. This poll is officially closed. Special thanks to Dan for organizing this fun event. Hopefully we can do more challenges in the future.
  2. I want to wish everybody a very Merry Christmas. I hope you are able to spend it with the ones you love. Thanks for making SSV so great. You make scrolling so much fun. I hope the new year brings you good health and prosperity....and lots of sawdust. Happy Holidays, my friends.
  3. In the upper right corner of a post, you see what looks like a sideways "V" next to the post number. If you click that, a popup will show up with the post URL You can copy and paste that into a document or whatever. You might want to add a description next to the URL so you know what it links to.
  4. Yah, I'm selling those for Dale. I think they're neat and a lot of folks seem to like them. It looks like that is an old ad. I need to change that. But here's what I'll do, instead. You can take 20% off whatever you put in the cart. That includes all of Dale's Puzzles and any of my other designs. Use the coupon code: SSV20 at checkout to save 20%. The coupon expires on January 31st, 2017. Thanks for pointing that out. Enjoy the patterns!
  5. Even if you have or don't want the Vases book, enter anyway. You can always donate the book to a fellow scroller if you win. It should be a lot of fun seeing what folks come up with.
  6. This looks like a lot of fun! Thank you Dan for putting this together. I look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.
  7. I'm proud to announce that SSV's Ornaments For Charity - 2016 eBook is now available! This year, we got 8 designers to design 40 additional patterns. The eBook is now 62 pages with 205 Holiday ornament patterns! You can download the eBook for free and check it out. If you decide to keep the eBook, we ask you to donate to your favorite charity (we're on the honor system here). Remember, this isn't about "buying" an ebook of patterns, it's about giving to a worthy cause. So dig deep when donating to your favorite charity. Please spread the word about this wonderful eBook of patterns. Post to your favorite social media, other clubs and organizations. The more people who know about it, the more money we're able to raise for worthy causes. You can find the ebook here. There will be a tab on the navigation menu through Christmas. After Christmas, it will be moved under the More tab in the navigation window. Special thanks to the following for donating patterns to this year's eBook: Birchbark CaseyJ debinoz DonR Fab4 Jesse meflick Travis I hope everybody has a wonderful Holiday Season surrounded by those you love.
  8. Reminder that today is the last day for ornament submissions. Get them in by anytime today and we'll be OK. I'll assemble the final eBook tomorrow. Thanks y'all!
  9. A friendly reminder that this Wed is the deadline for ornament submissions. There's still time if you want to participate.
  10. On a related note, please don't post the patterns on SSV because of copyright reasons. But I'd love to see some cuttings.
  11. Here's a fun site. They show you how to cut paper snow flakes with Star Wars characters. But, it would be easy enough for a scroller to use the pattern and cut some out of BB ply. Here's a link to the site: http://www.anthonyherreradesigns.com/starwarssnowflakes
  12. I did. Sorry for the miss. I'll probably start downloading and assembling the book this weekend. It's certainly not too late. If you want to participate, just have your patterns in by next Wednesday. Our list has been updated below: Travis DonR (submitted) debinoz (submitted) Fab4 (submitted) CaseyJ (submitted) meflick (submitted) helmut (submitted) Jesse (submitted) vykus Birchbark (submitted)
  13. Sorry, I've been away for a few days. It looks like we hit out goal! 50 new patterns will be added to this year's eBook. Can we get another couple designers? Will it be you? Here's where we're at: Travis DonR (submitted) debinoz (submitted) Fab4 (submitted) CaseyJ meflick (submitted) helmut (submitted) Jesse (submitted) vykus Birchbark (submitted) Who else is in?
  14. We're doing awesome! This might be our best year yet! So far we got: Travis DonR (submitted) debinoz Fab4 (submitted) CaseyJ meflick (submitted) helmut (submitted) debinoz Jesse (submitted) Who's going to tip us over into the double digits? Is it you? Who else is in?

  16. Are you trying to make the poll show it shows who voted for what? If so, right next to the Poll Title, there's a checkbox that says Make Public. That will show who voted. Unfortunately, you can't edit that part of the poll once it's been published.
  17. If you go into your gallery, and choose a picture. In the lower left corner of the image panel, you should have an Image Moderation button. Click that and choose Edit Image. That should get you to the place where you can edit Title, Descriptions, Tags, and Pattern Designer. Let me know if you don't have it.
  18. We're off to a great start! I'd love to get 10 designers this year. If we hit that goal, we'd have 50 additional ornaments to add to this year's Ornaments For Charity ebook! That would be awesome. So far we got: Travis DonR debinoz Fab4 (submitted) Who else is in?
  19. We'll need 5 individual ornament patterns and you can email/PM them to me. When I assemble the eBook, I'll group them together so the book flows correctly. Does that answer your question? Or did I misunderstand?
  20. Halloween is over and Christmas is right around the corner. Scrollers are starting to think about gifts and patterns to cut for loved ones. But since the Holiday season is also about helping others in need, we're continuing our tradition here at Scroll Saw Village as a way to give back. This will be our 7th year of publishing an e-Book full of Christmas ornaments. This popular e-Book was featured in the Holiday 2014 issue of Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts magazine. Our ornaments designs are exclusive to this eBook and designed by SSV members. Anyone are can download the ebook in exchange for a donation to their favorite charity. Our hope is that we'd be able to raise some money for very worthy causes, and provide some cool patterns at the same time. But we need your help! So I'll need some volunteers to design some ornaments. Each designer will provide 5 patterns (no more, no less) I ask that the designs are not made available anywhere else (this gives value to the e-book) They have to be designed specifically by you (no posting other people's patterns) Designs must be emailed (or PM) to Travis by Wednesday, November 23rd (info below) A few things to keep in mind: Religious and secular designs are accepted. Other religions/traditions also celebrate this time of year, so lets not forget them. Keep detail and size appropriate for an ornament. Don't submit copyrighted or licensed patterns. The due date will sneak up on you quicker than you think. Get them to me ASAP. What do you get in exchange? Credit for your design. The warm fuzzy feeling that you're helping others in need. Submitting your ornaments: Email the ornaments directly to Travis (travis [at] scrollsawvillage.com) or PM me. Formats accepted are JPG, PNG. Please keep the pattern in black & White only (no gray) . That way I can convert them easier when putting together the ebook. I'll also accept Inkscape files (SVG). This is ideal if you know how to use Inkscape. That way there is no conversion. If you haven't seen it yet, here's our article in Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts from last year: I'm designing. Are you? So who's in? .
  21. They make bowl making router bits that have a nice round curve at the bottom. I wonder if you can use that. Make a template out of plywood for the guide bushings and just make a shallow cut into your workpiece.
  22. It must be a recent development. I used to get emails too. I think Google changed their algorithm. Gmail must have recently flagged it for spam. SSV is on a shared server, which means many other websites use it too. So I'm guessing someone else spammed, it was flagged, and everybody using that server is getting flagged. Grrr. I'm trying to figure it out. Once I do, I'll let y'all know.
  23. Here’s a fun little project, just in time for Halloween. I used a cedar fence board to make these cute segmented candy corns. It features a rough and rustic look. I show you how to add an aged patina to the project for that vintage folk art look. This project can be easily batched out and finished very quickly to add to your spooky Halloween decor. Step 1 First, sand down some cedar fence boards from the home center ($2-3/board) with 80 grit sandpaper. Don’t sand it completely smooth, just enough to remove the splinters. We want it rough. Step 2 Sketch out the basic candy corn shape. It’s just a triangle with rounded corners. Two curved lines in the middle make up the candy corn color bands. Don't make them all the same, vary the size and shape a bit to keep things interesting. Step 3 Cut the board down to something more manageable. Step 4 Cut them out on the scroll saw. I’m using a #9 scroll-reverse blade. Cut out the perimeter first, then come back and do the bands. Keep each set of pieces together. Step 5 With a rotary tool (like this one) and a small sanding drum, knock off the edges. Be a little rough with them so as to give them an aged and worn look. Step 6 Time to add paint. The bottom is orange, the middle is yellow, and the top is white. Don’t get hung up on getting it perfect. If it's rough, it'll add to the final look. Step 7 With 80 grit sandpaper, sand each piece. Sand away the paint on the edges and high areas revealing some bare wood. Step 8 Glue your pieces together. I’m using wood glue. They don’t need clamps but be sure to clean out any glue squeeze-out. Step 9 Time to add the weathering. I use a medium wood stain and paint it on really thick. With a clean rag, wipe off the excess and set it aside to cure. Step 10 I use furniture wax to soften the feel and protect the wood. (I like Howard Citric Shield.) Glop it on thick and let it sit for 10 minutes. Then with a clean rag, buff off the extra wax. I use a toothbrush to get the wax out of the cracks and crevices. Set aside to cure. Step 11 The wax will build up in the recesses and may give some parts a cloudy look. You can use a heat gun to melt the wax and let it soak back into the wood. Final
  24. When you turn the corner, put pressure on the side of the blade at first. As you turn, slowly transfer pressure from the side to the back of the blade. You can go slowly, it doesn't have to be quick. Once your blade is pointing the right direction, start cutting again, putting pressure on the front of the blade instead of the back. But that should get you your square corners.
  25. I never heard of Scroller Online being unscrupulous. They are a reseller of patterns. They have contracts with a number of prominent designers to sell their patterns on their behalf. So you may see some of your favorite designers from magazines also selling the same patterns through Scroller Online, and perhaps even designer's own website.
