    Chipmunk

I decided to finish the chipmunk instead of doing laundry today. I painted it with watered down acrylic paint. I had this frame that fit so decided to use it. It needed a break between the frame and the piece so I painted a black border. The border cuts into the cutting and I am not thrilled with it, but overall it works.
  4. it's sometimes fun to compare projects to see how we are improving. You did a great job on the cross both times, but the second is fantastic!
  5. What kind of phone are you using?

    Chipmunk

I cut this chipmunk over the last couple of weeks. the pattern is by Mike Willams of http://mikesscrollsawpatterns.com/it is a great pattern and was fun to cut. I hadn't done any detailed spiral cutting in a while and I saw the pattern posted on facebook and decided I wanted to cut it. It is far from perfect, there are so many mistakes, but once the pattern came off it looked great anyway! I think I may add some color when I frame it up, but haven't really decided how I am going to do it yet. I took pictures along the way and created a slideshow, I think this link will work. https://goo.gl/photos/xMY8N5rJtzxP1bfV6 Katie
  10. On most of my projects I use Rust Oleum 2x clear https://www.amazon.com/Oleum-280702-American-Accents-12-Ounce/dp/B00KZ6LYMM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1478291107&sr=8-1&keywords=rustoleum+2x+clear+glossLike that one from Amazon, but I buy it locally from any of the hardware type stores (home depot, lowes, ace, walmart, menards) I also buy different spray polys or lacquers from time to time. The rustoleum is cheaper, and clear for painted projects.
  11. You are correct in your observation. Glue soaks into the wood and seals the pores so the stain can soak in. A longer soak or scrub with mineral spirits may help, or trying to sand down past the glue "damaged" area. It can happen with any type of wood. Pine is also a bit difficult to stain sometimes. The stain absorbs differently in different grain densities and sometimes looks quite blotchy. A sanding sealer or thin coat of finish can help even out the absorption rate of the stain.
  12. I would do something like this. My computer inverted the colors at some point, sorry.
  13. You can make bigger patterns, but you will need to tape pieces together or get a fancy printer. Most wood is narrower than 12" and a lot of baskets are made from single pieces. Also, they are a nice size to work with. I use a flying dutchman ultra reverse #5 and #3 for probably 95% of my cuttings. You will develop a favorite blade and run with it eventually. Most of my baskets are 3/4" stock and cut with a #5 and 5-9" in diameter.
  14. As long as I don't have a dull bit, I don't usually notice burning at the high speeds. Sorry, I'm no help today!
  15. can you be a bit more specific about what you are looking for?
  16. There are a lot of methods that you can use. It depends a bit on the type of pattern you are cutting and your personal preference. I personally, usually, wrap all of the edges in blue painters tape. It is relatively simple and quick. Other methods include: Hot gluing the edges of the boards - I have never personally done this, but some people love it. brad nails in waste areas - great for when boards have a little warp to them, it holds everything nice and tight. Also great if you are cutting ornaments and have lots of waste area
  17. I have painted using acrylic paint, or a wash of paint diluted with water, or a wash of paint with a staining medium. I have dyed projects using food coloring. Mix a fairly strong colored water solution and dip the project in. Others have used RIT Dyes for stronger colors. Spray paint is easy if you just need a single color. Glitter spray paint is great to get some bling on your project.
  18. most of the pieces that use 1/8" are not too heavy, so I just hang them with 3m command strips. If is going someplace I want to hang things often I will use the 3m velcro hangers so I can change out the pieces.
  19. here is a link to his author page on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=dp_byline_sr_book_1?ie=UTF8&text=Marcus+Clemons&search-alias=books&field-author=Marcus+Clemons&sort=relevancerank lots of interesting books.
