    Wolf Puzzle

Hehe... Somebody already did them. I'll just buy their patterns.

    Wolf Puzzle

Roly, here's the quick tutorial...make pattern, put pattern on wood, cut wood. OK, I had to do that. I first drew a wolf outline on paper, you know, the stuff we used in the olden days. Then I drew simple letters. Next, I drew the letter shapes in the form of a puzzle. I scanned this as a JPEG then copied the JPEG into Inkscape and used the Trace Bitmap menu item. I touched it up as needed. Thanks for all the comments.
  3. Here's a standup wolf puzzle that I just finished. It's made from some poplar (a gorgeous piece of wood). I love making these types of puzzles but I only used harder woods (maple, cherry, oak) in the past. The poplar is much easier to cut and a lot cheaper. I'll be going out this weekend to get some. I will also post the PDF version of my pattern. The JPEG is already in the pattern library. Wolf Puzzle.pdf Thanks for looking. Dan
  4. The blade was at its degrees. I think at the slower speed it was flexing which caused the angled cut. At the faster speed it was probably cutting more material which lowered the resistance to the feed rate. I think that was the secret. At least I have convinced myself of that.
  5. Inspired by Ike, I decided to make another stand up puzzle. I cut it from poplar and the blade speed set at 4 (of 6). The Kerns were not perpendicular so I had to do some sanding. Arg! I changed the speed to 6 and, OMG, the kerfuffle is perfectly perpendicular. After thinking about it it makes sense. I'll have some pictures as soon as the finish cures.
  6. The display and items for sale look great! Congrats on the sales.
  7. If you are interested in fretwork I would also suggest Gary Browning. For intarsia look into some of Judy Robert's books. Check out your local library and browse them.
  8. Nice job and great project. One thing I noticed is the flag behind Grant has more stars than there were states at the end of the war.
  9. Awesome! I guess I'll have to get started on one now.
  10. Good luck! People seem to be buying this year.

Great work! The dark stain is a perfect match.
  12. Kelly, check out the pattern gallery. There are lots of fantastic patterns and ideas.
  13. How cool is that? Thanks for showing.

    Nice cutting! Great variety.
  15. Very nice as usual! I saw the picture before I saw who posted but I knew it was Helmut. Keep them coming.
  16. Another excellent job.
  17. That is fantastic.
  18. As promised, here's my next moonscape from Steve Good. This one is modified to enclose the back and sides to keep the light from shining out. I used a 0.4 watt LED bulb that puts out as much light as a 4 watt incandescent bulb, but with less heat. You can run these bulbs for hours and still touch them as they barely get warm. The first photo shows the top right corner as it is enclosed. The second photo shows the image with the lights out. Now, there is no light reflecting off the wall behind it. I did use cheap 1/4" plywood because I wanted to see if this would work. Next time I'll use the good stuff.
  19. They are all nice. Not sure why but the Santa is my favorite.
  20. Nice looking. I think the colors did it wonders.

    Bear Moonscape

I have one in work with the back enclosed. It will be a few days until I post it because I have to go back to work tomorrow. The only thin left is painting and final assembly.
  22. Great choice of a pattern Jeff. It is perfect for the burl. I like the way the color variation radiates from the subject.

    Bear Moonscape

Thanks guys. These are the same item. The one on the left is with the overhead lights on, the one on the right is with the overhead lights off and the bears backlit. I really like these and have already started making the wolves.
  24. Maybe sand the inside of the sleeve.
  25. As promised, I am posting some photos. This is a Steve Good pattern. I love the options he has for this pattern set. I tried an LED bulb but it cast a shadow that I didn't like. I may modify the design to enclose the bulb as I don't care for the light shining behind the display. Also, the box on the back that holds the bulb is too tall and shows near the bottom. I'll fix that too. I'll be making more of these soon. Thanks for looking.
