You dug into this farther than I have so I guess I don't have any suggestions for you on taking it apart.. Maybe contact Bushton... I only took it apart enough to get that connecting rod off to change the bearings on each end of it.. Sorry you got took by the dishonest seller.. Hopefully you'll be able to repair this without too much extra $$ .. I absolutely hate dishonest deals like this.. even when it happens to others.. makes my blood boil.. On a more positive note.. I think you'll find you'll love the saw once you get it running right.. Oh... I was going to mention that when you send an email to Bushton.. they don't usually respond very fast.. it's much better to give them a call... They run multi pal small business's and also are Farmers.. so I think they respond to email when they get a chance.. where as a phone call it much quicker.. and sometimes easier to explain something in detail too..

You know... I talked about this on another site ( not a scroll saw site but a online sellers group ) and it just made me sick what many others said.. They said to package it and ship it that way with insurance and then when the customer complains of a broken item claim it on the insurance get paid for that one and another by the insurance claim... Just sad how many dishonest people are out there like that.. You know.. I like getting a bargain as much as anyone else does... but I like mine to be honest deals... Yeah every now and then i like to tell some tall stories etc.. but when it comes right down to dealing and doing business.. honesty is the only way.. at least for me.. Probably why shipping prices are so high.. all the people scamming the shipping companies... A couple years ago I ordered a laptop charge cable on eBay.. the seller sent the wrong one.. after I contacted them they commented that they sent out the correct one right away and when I receive it told me to carefully open the box and switch the cables out and carefully tape the box back up then mark it return to sender... This way nobody has to pay extra for the mistake.. well except the postal company.. that comes out of their profit.. needles to say.. I just packed it up and bought a shipping label... I'm not getting caught up in some other person fraud just to save $5

That's exactly how I always think about things..

First thing this morning packing orders this happens. Guess I should hold onto stuff better .. I have two custom orders I’m working on and two made to order jobs going on. With this breaking puts me a little behind schedule. So I’m out sawing a new one and my phone keeps chirping with alerts of new orders both Etsy and amazon. You know when the phone makes a order sound I’ve just gotta check to see what the purchased item is...several orders came in today and one of the orders is for 53 ornaments. Lucky me I anticipated this and already had 32 made. Probably a record money making day for me. Not uncommon to do a few hundred a day this time of year but well into the four digits is not something that happens for me anyway. So anyway mad about the broken clock first thing in the morning but getting these orders is kinda making a sour day a little bit better. Now.. gotta get to work. If I’m a little scarce around here, just know I’m probably knee deep in sawdust. Or tangled up in bubble wrap and packing tape and stuck to a box.

Hi Dan, First, welcome to the scroll saw village My Hawk is around that same year... While the saw is quite old.. mine was still newly boxed when I purchased it last year... Common bearing problems? I don't know how common.. but after about 4 months of use with my saw it picked up a vibration that turned out to be from the bearings in that connecting rod ( flat steel bar that connects motor to the lower saw arm).. There is a video on the Hawk web site that explains the difference between the ultra and the new BM series.. In that video they mentioned a upgrade to the BM series motor counter weight and motor.. the motors like we have has a bearing in that counter weight as well as right inside the motor casing and something about the two bearings creating heat or something.. I can't remember now without watching the video again.. but anyway.. they did in fact have some issues in that area on the older saws and they claim to have fixed that issue with the newer saws... They do also mention about the set screw working loose and that the motor shaft has a flat spot on it.. and that they have seen that set screw wear the motor shaft clean in half.. I myself cannot phantom how the operator couldn't notice something odd in this scenario but... LOL That bolt that holds that connecting rod to the counter weight.. they are supposed to be tight.. Mine was so tight I ended up having to remove the motor from the saw and I had to rig up some clamping contraption to hold the motor etc so I could loosen that bugger... There is a hole on the end of the motor that you stick a hex ( allen ) wrench to hold the motor from spinning while you loosen that bolt.. ( if I remember correctly ).. but it's not seen until you take the motor out, LOL.. Believe it's on the top side of the motor when it's in the saw maybe? funny how I can remember some things and not others LOL.. Anyway, good luck with it and let us know if you have any other specific questions.. Also let us know what you find out.. maybe something for the rest of us to learn upon or watch out for in purchasing a used saw

A lot of your high end equipment is price by the manufacture.. like you said (Festool.. Another purchase I'm doing before the end of the year).. Stil does the same thing.. I think Fein also.. anyway yeah.. many companies do this price setting.. You can ( I have ) contact the company directly and sometimes do some dickering with them.. not real easy to do.. but have been there done that and won a great deal.. Did it years ago with a Stil chain saw..

Thought some of you might like to see that you don't always need tools to make things You'll think this is interesting.. I was amazed at what he can do with these cans

Same here Ray.. I rarely go on Facebook.. so not sure how i seen them.. just right timing I suppose.. My wife uses my FB more than I do.. she cracked me up as she didn't want her own account because she don't get on computers much.. but man she is addicted to that FB and my Pinterest accounts, LOL I rarely get on either one.. Mostly my online besides working on the selling sites and communicating with customers is here as well.. I get email notifications from my sites and go answer questions customers have then while I'm online I check in here, LOL sometimes answer something here... then I get back to work, LOL

I sort of thought the same thing about the smaller HP motor.. I figure though.. if it's not enough.. I can always put a small block V-8 in its place.. That's why i like the safety features of the Saw Stop saw

You're a member of " All Things Scroll Saw and Bandsaw " ..... There was a video posted 20 hours ago.. that saw has the Ex Pegas clamp on the DeWalt saw.. Another group called " Scroll Saw & Wood Projects " click on the videos section on the left column and scroll down a ways.. there is about a 2 hour video of another couple of people sawing with a dewalt with the Ex Pegas clamp.. There is another one somewhere too.. so there are some using them.. you might go and comment on how they like this clamp on the DeWalt and maybe they'll give you some insight on it....

Well I did build a big shop for this reason.. but I still feel the need for a bigger shop, I'm thinking about this rig right here.. https://www.rockler.com/sawstop-1-75-hp-professional-table-saw-w-30-fence-rails-and-extension-table?sid=V9146?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=&utm_content=pla&utm_campaign=PL&gclid=CjwKCAiAiarfBRASEiwAw1tYvzobG7jpVDe9RZY_TwoELZK_24Ra3YpoUHPCG4Z0b_fgxD0El7e9exoCBgMQAvD_BwE

There is a better way to explain this I think.. but.. I think of the blades with a " / with a 0 behind it as a negative blade size number.. ie blades 0, 1,2,3,4,5,6 and so on are positive or + numbers... then the numbers like shown here 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 etc etc... are what I call negative sized blades.. so anyway.. your thought is true for the positive sized blades.. but with the number 0 behind the number and / sign is opposite.. if there is a /0 behind the number then the higher the number the smaller the blade.. Kind of weird how they do that but.. anyway.. that is how I think of it in my tiny little brain..

There are several people running them on the deWalt Ray.. I've seen quite a lot of post and videos on some of the Facebook groups where people have them on their saws.. Never seen any about how well they like them or anything of that nature.. but I've seen quite a few different people running them.. I also thought that it might make running the DeWalt easier because the Ex and the Hawks have the lever similar to one another rather than spinning the tension lever... Don't use my DeWalt enough to really justify buying the set though..

I see a wide variety of blade sizes and uses just in the few post so far.. I personally cut my portraits out from 3mm BB plywood.. and always stack cut at least 3 at a time... My go to blade is actually a #1 new spiral and sometimes a 0/2 blade.. BUT that said.. again depends upon the saw I'm cutting on too... every saw cuts differently.. and everyone has a different cutting style.. Many people like the Pegas spirals.. I bought some and didn't really care for them all that much on my Hawk saw.. but they are great on my Excalibur.. Love Olsen #1 or maybe it was a #2? cutting on my Hawk.. But they are harden steel blades and tend to be quite brittle.. and I break a lot of them LOL.. compared to the FD blades.. If they have a sample pack of sizes.. I might suggest going that route first to get a feel or what blade YOU like.. as I said... look at all the different go to blade used that has been posted so far... Also remember... the more teeth and smaller blades will give a smoother cut edge too.. why I don't care for anything larger than a #1 for most cuts I do.. and the larger number doesn't always mean a faster cut either.. as they are a wider blade so they have to cut through more material.. I personally found that a #1 generally cuts faster than a #3... See if you can locate a sample pack.. On a side note: Someone mentioned you don't have to spin the wood around.. While that is true.. but... the scroll saw is designed with the intent to cut from the front.. and so they make the blade stroke go in a forward motion on the cut stroke ( down stroke ) so... the spirals cut pretty good on the front and even from the sides .. but trying to cut on the back side of the blade is really slow going... I typically still spin the wood to some extent to keep the cutting going at a more constant rate.. Another thing to mention... Since they cut any direction... you'll find that if there is some soft / hard spots in the wood.. those blades like to take the path of least resistance.. so if you are cutting next to a soft spot.. the blade is going to want to travel right in to that spot.. They are a little tricky to use... especially on solid wood.. plywood not so bad because of the glued layers etc they are typically pretty consistent with soft / hard spots.. so the BB ply is a good wood to learn them on..

That's why I was asking questions here... considering I don't claim to really know a lot about table saws.. so I could easily be talked into something I don't want or need.. LOL...

Mine does something similar to this when it's cold out when i first start it in the morning.. but once it run for 10-15 seconds clears right up... I figured it's probably not to good for it to run that way so i got to where I'd heat it up with a heat lamp for a few minutes before turning it on... Another possibility is the bearings are dried out of grease and dragging the motor down..
-
Yeah, I usually don't have to turn my heat on during the day until mid late November.. but I've been using it on and off since mid Oct.. Oh we've gotten about 1.5 inch of snow over night...

I was pretty set on a SawStop before I even posted here.. but wanted to review what others had to say.. A sales person will tell you the saw they carry is the best you can get.. so I wanted to see what you all might say before I talk to the sales people... I've looked at reviews on a lot of different saws and brands.. The added $700-1000 for safety is most likely cheaper than a ER bill and I'd most likely be able to keep my fingers LOL ... Though that feature isn't what is making the decision.. Part of it is they seem to be the closest dealer to higher end saws. and the reviews have all been good that I've seen..

My One and Only Yearly Craft Show.... :+}
kmmcrafts replied to danny's topic in General Scroll Sawing
Nice set up and great work.. Someday I'm going to do one of those craft shows.. Next year might be my year for it.. I've been investigating the local shows etc.. Have one show I'd really like to try to get into.. but have heard they have a waiting list that could be out as much as a couple years... -
Yeah , sure glad I upgraded.. What saw did you put them on? Id like to see some comments from those using them on the DeWalts..
-
My first snow came a few weeks ago.. but didn't last but an hour or so.. and only about 1/2" .. Then this last Friday we got about 3-4" and it stuck around until mid-late day Sunday.. I use to like the snow more than I do now.. Still like to see it for a short while.. but those winters get long when it stays around for 3 or so months and here in Michigan where I'm at we don't get much sun because of the Lake ( so they say anyway )... I spend a few weeks over Christmas and New Years in Florida ( Daytona Beach ) back around 2009.. and I sort of felt like I missed Christmas that year as there was no snow and I don't know... just didn't feel right that year.. I like my snow white Christmas.. then after that the snow could leave, LOL.. a bonus would be some warmer temps too but just having the snow gone would be helpful.. I say that now.. but.. i really do enjoy the snow.. makes for some exciting driving too...

I go to Johnson's a couple times a month.. my go to store for BBply and other assorted things.. which is the store I mentioned carries the Saw Stop brand.. and well... others too.. but for table saws.. they pretty much only have the saw stop brand on the show room floor... I was at Lowes a while back and they have a really nice looking Delta saw.. not sure what it is since I really don't know much about these saws.. never really knew the difference between a cabinet or contractor saw.. but certainly not the entry level tradesman saw I'm currently using, LOL.. I don't use a table saw a lot... but some of the reason is because I'm limited on what my saw can do too... Looking to do some cutting boards and other types of woodwork besides just scroll sawing... my knowledge of other woodwork is limited.. I doubt I could build a square box and have it really be square, LOL at least with the tools I currently use..

Space isn't a huge problem... I have a two car type floor space for the lower section of my shop.. BUT.. that said I really want to try to keep one bay open for the ease of just being able to pull a car in if it needs repairs.. without having to move my whole shop out of the way to do so, LOL.. right now I am using about a half of the one bay.. and if I sell off a few un-needed scroll saws I'd have a lot more room.. Money isn't going to be a huge problem either.. but I do want to be realistic to.. I'm not looking for a huge saw to take up the rest of my shop space.. Really just wanting a GOOD saw where I can do rip cuts for a nice smooth edge for doing glue ups.. The cheap saw I'm using now has way too much run-out and using a good thin kerf blade gets hot and is burning the edges.. so I only run one board through with my new feud blade and I took the blade off.. not wanting to ruin the blade or anymore wood, LOL...

I'm looking to buy a table saw possibly... and since I really don't have a lot of experience with a table saw was looking for tips on what I should get.. any certain brands to look for or look out for, LOL.. One of the local tool suppliers carries Saw Stop ? or something like that brands... Not looking for a small portable saw like I have.. looking for something with some quality.. Oh.. would rather buy local and not have something shipped.. as semis won't come down my road for freight orders, Found that out the hard way with my Grizzly band saw, LOL Shoulda seen me trying to fit that into my trunk out at the main road..
-
I'm thinking Grizzly will probably be running a sale for either black Friday or cyber Monday..
