  1. Here is the olson chart. I personally use #3 ultra reverse for fretwork and #7 UR for thicker projects. I know a lot of people like the spirals but I have never gotten them to work for me. I mostly use Olson but I am using #3 Flying Dutchman right now and they work well, although they may cut a little to fast on 1/8 BB.
  2. I've been known to do a lot of relief carving, crosses and such and I bought my old dremel scroll saw off of craigslist with the idea of using it to remove waste wood from carvings. Of course I had to do some research on scroll saws and when I saw what else you could do with it, I had to experiment. I read books, magazines and of course came onto this site a lot. Within 3 months I designed my own portrait pattern, cut it, framed it and gave it to my ex-Brother-in-law for Christmas. That was 4 years ago. I hardly carve anymore, I love scrolling to much and want to do that much more. I continue to learn, and try new things that I think up. I am just getting to the point of receiving commissions and selling pieces I have made and that is a very gratifying feeling. I am still on the same saw and I want to upgrade so badly, my saw shakes really bad, it makes detail cutting difficult. Maybe next year.
  3. What I do is mark the spots that are going to be glued and cover them with painters tape and then spray them. after it dries remove the tape and glue it up. You just have to be sure not to tape a part that will be exposed.
  4. I am curious what people would price this piece at. I spent probably 20 hrs on it. what would you expect to get for it?
  5. Here is my most recent accomplishment. I am starting to really love intarsia. I originally bought my scroll saw to help with my carving by cutting out waste wood before the carving began, but soon found so many other cool things to do with it. This cross is made out of walnut and I think red cedar and finished with shellac. It turned out so well. I posted it on my facebook account last night and it sold within an hour. I was surprised. I put out that I would make more of them if anyone was interested, we will have to wait and find if anyone bites. It is an original design that I made a long time ago based on something else that I saw online and I really wish I still had the photo that inspired it. I hope you all like it.

Len, I can say with about 95% certainty that it came from SSV, I know i have had it printed out for over a year, on my to do list and back then I only came here for patterns. and I know it's not purchased because I have never purchased a pattern.

I honestly don't remember what wood it was. I just grabbed a piece that the pattern fit on.

I finished cutting this about a week ago and have dipped it in Danish Oil twice and it is now dry and ready to use. I'm planning on holding onto it for a fair I do in the fall. I think it really turn out well. I used some #9 ultra Reverse that were sitting around, which is a much larger blade than I usually use but it seemed to work well but I think a #7 might be a better choice, I got some strange marks on the inside of curves that I think a slightly smaller blade might eliminate. Matt
  10. I finished this commission of 40 small wall plaques a few weeks ago but today was the day they were handed out at my church. They turned out wonderfully. 1/4 in cherry finished with danish oil and a few coats of poly. They our course pointed out that I had made them, so I got a round of applause which totally made me self conscious. I'm not one that takes complements well. But as long as they enjoy what I made I'm happy.
  11. I've also seen some great paper cuttings on Pinterest that I thought would make great scrollwork. Great job on these, I like the colors a lot, it would make a great tryptic.
  12. They all look great, you have a talent with pattern design. Any chance you are going to share those wonderful patterns with the rest of us? I think the Ring Wraith would be awesome to cut.
  13. Looks great, those are some tight seems. I can't find a gap at all. Wish I was that accurate.
  14. That is some fine cutting. I wish my stuff was that clean.

    The start

The symbol is for the Unitarian Universalist church. The arch on top I added for hanging. It's a chalice with a flame surrounded by two rings. They will be given to the religious education teachers at the end of the year.

    The start

Nope, it's 1/4 in cherry. I'm doing them one at a time. It has a meditative quality. Trying to make the next one better and more perfect than the one before.
  17. Here are the first 9 of an order of 40. I never done an order this large. It's going well and the weather has been cooperating pretty well lately. I have to have them done by May 1, So I'm not too worried. Thanks for looking
  18. I just started an order of 40 pieces, my largest by far. It's a simple pattern but I worry about just getting so bored. any tips?
  19. It looks like it has burn marks, was it made with a laser?

  21. I hate to disagree with ya'll but my impression of the piece is that it is one piece, no backer piece. I like it the way it is, gives a gothic feel.
  22. Thank you all for your wonderful comments.
  23. I was experimenting with dyes this weekend and used a cake frosting dye and I think it worked out great. It comes in an 8 pack and you can get it at hobby lobby it comes in a gel and it is very strong. I used the gel straight on. as I recall it was not all that expensive either. my samples are on 1/4 baltic birch. the colors are blue, green, pink, red, purple, yellow, orange and brown. The red and pink are pretty similar and the yellow is a little orangey for my taste.
  24. it's 14 inches and will be hung on the wall.
  25. Earlier this summer my brother-in-law showed me a picture of a simple plaque of the 101st Airborne patch, which was his unit in the 1st gulf war. He asked if I could make one like it. I said yeah, we agreed on a price and off I went. Of course I could not just make a simple plaque I had to make it into an intarsia piece. Here are some pictures, the first is of the one he wanted me to copy. I used ebony, yellowheart, bloodwood, holly, walnut and another wood that I don't remember what it is, maybe oak.
