  1. Hi Travis Do you have a pattern for napkin rings, I was thinking about turning some but I would prefer to scroll. I am good a turning the first one but the duplicates are tough. Thanks Don
  2. I use the FD Ultra reverse on most cuttings. I love them when cutting signs etc as you usually don't have to sand at all. I did a detailed plaque recently and used FD UR #1 and I was really happy. Don
  3. Did you check leevalley.com. They have a couple of sets. Not cheap but I am sure are good. Don
  4. Welcome to the scrolling world. As far as a machine is concerned buy the best you can afford. I have an Excalibur 21 and love it. I use a Dewalt at the club and it is okay too. Join as many forums as you can and just browse too see what you like to do best. There are lots of variety in the projects you can tackle from Intarsia, fretwork, compound cuts, toys, puzzles, portraits etc. There a number of videos to teach the basics but you can really gets some good ideas. Check out Steve Good and Shelia Landy's blog. Good luck Don
  5. The pattern is available at http://www.gmbservices.ca/Woodworking%20Plans.htm The plan I made was Pony 103. Don
  6. This is the third one of these I have done. We did a group built at the club and since we have a lot of scrollsaws it was completely cut on the scroll saw. Other times I used a band saw with lots of sanding. With the scrollsaw not too much sanding at all. Lots of fun and I am sure that it will get lots of use.
  7. I have 2 goals. 1. Make some non round bowls. I have have the 2 books by Carole Rothman and most of the tools. I have attempted a couple of test bowls with out much success. I want to give it another go in the new year with a different patterns and material. I would like to get a couple of square or oblong bowls and a couple of wavy done so I can go to "show and tell" at the club and ask the turners it they can do that. There is a friendly rivalry between the scrollers and turners. 2. I want to learn Intarsia too. I have all the tools (I think) and some western red cedar. When I was at Judy Gale Robert's studio in the summer I bought a book and I plan on making all the examples. Judy says it teaches you all the basics. I have built a sanding station that has a wonder wheel and a flexible sanding drum. I was on the todo list but I had too many projects for Christmas. Now just have to finish one more club project and get started next week. Don
  8. Googled and got this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example_(musician) Don
  9. One of my grandson's told his Mom that the best part of Christmas was that Papa made something out of wood for him so I got busy and made a biplane for 2 of my grandson. Pattern by Steve Good.
  10. Actually started with the prototype a couple of month ago. Finally completed today. 4 geneneric sleighs and 16 personalized to be used at Christmas dinner as place tags and to load up up with candies. Now just got to get on with the rest of the list.
  11. Steve Good has a video on Youtube using FIMO clay. Steve also has a video on using Inlace but I can not locte Inlace in Canada I have done this for key fobs and they come out quite attractive but I can't find pictures on these but I have use FIMO clay for inlays on bowls as below .
  12. What PDF reader are you using? The only Option I have with Abobe Reader is PDF, or text. There is a option to convert to Word or xcel but these are online options with Adobe. Don
  13. I am doing little persoanlized sleighs for Christmas dinner. I have cut all the bodies, runners and most of one side. Still have the other side plus the personalization. Doing 20 of these. I have included a copy of the prototype. Changed the runners to no year with a few frets plus I am going to paint the runners gold. Doing a 8 x 10 Jigssaw puzzle for my Mom. (She'll be 98 and still loves puzzles). Cutting a photo of her 5 great grand kids on my side. Running a class at the club to make Rocking Horses. Making one myself but not required for Christmas. Turning a couple Pepper Mills and stitch pullers for gifts. I was on track until I got a really bad cold that has kept me out of the shop for 2 weeks. I am sure it is the dust that sets off the coughing. Going to buy new dust mask today so I can get back at it. I just love Christmas when I can make some gifts myself.
  14. That is a very cool idea and very well done. What kind of wood are you using? I do name plates for the grandkids teachers each year and have to go buy some wood and I really like the look of these. Thanks Don
  15. If you google "cutlist" there are lots of programs and ideas. I used to have an old one for making panel doors but I can not find. Lumberjocks has a tested one use if you design in Sketch up. http://lumberjocks.com/daltxguy/blog/5143 Good luck
  16. Welcome fellow Canuck. Where in Canada? I am just north of Whitby, Ontario. Don
  17. Love the pattern and the colours. I have bought magnets from leevalley in the past but never made a fridge magnet. On the todo list. http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=32065&cat=1,42363,42348
  18. Great saw. Love mine. The stand takes a bit to put together. When I did mine, I put a board in the middle as a shelf and it really firms up the whole thing. It is easy to do as you go. Also, I made the back legs longer than the front to put the table on an angle. I find it easier that way. Also, if you are using a stool make sure the height is comfortable. I originally had it at one height and I got a new padded stool and then had to adject everything as the new stool would not go as low as the old setting. Don
  19. Love the bowl. What size it? Don
  20. Welcome to the village. Where in Ontario. I am in Brooklin (North Whitby) just east to Toronto. Member of the Durham Woodworking Club. Don
  21. I took a card from Grampa and tweeked at bit to match my ability. Thanks Grampa for the idea. Gave it to my Mom and she was thrilled. Stacked cut 4 so for other relatives. Too heavy to mail.
  22. I just did 20 of Steve Goods personalized ornaments in 1/4 BB. Was not happy so ended up painting them. Still not finished as the Boss wants more colour. In future I will only use BB if I intend to paint them or are very light and 1/8 will do. I wished I had used hardwood. Don
  23. Welcome to the Village. If you don't mind, what kind of laser cutter do you have and what is the cost approx. I do wood turning and scrolling a lot and have thought about looking at a laer so that I could enhance my projects what I make but don't know where to start. Thanks Don
  24. I don't do craft shows but go to a lot with LOLML and what annoys her most is items that are not priced or can't be easily seen. She just walks on. I have seen from other sites that mini birdhouses and angels are selling like hot cakes. I would never have guessed that people would pay $10 or 2 for $18 for them but it have been reported a number of times tht this is the going number. A couple of my friends are making lots for their shows and I am not sure what they are going to sell for. Don
  25. Hi. I am a woodturner too. You might want to inquire where you buy your turning wood if they have interest in scrolling wood. On a recent trip to the place where I buy wood for turning and pens, my buddy found some slabs of wood that where about 1/2" thick and still had on the natural bark. He took all of then to do wildlife portraits. The owner said he would cut some more as he just cut them for fun and did really know who would buy them. When looking around I bought some cherry and maple squares for platters and he said he could cut some down to 1/4" or more and sand to 120grit. He said to drop in this week and see what he has. I was there with a couple of other scrollers and he said that this might be a whole new market for him. You never know where you can get supplies. Don I
