  1. Mike, that is one delicate welcome sign & very nicely done too. I would be afraid of breaking it. With a backer it would be a little more sturdy. Thanks
  2. Len, I think I would believe what you said is a good possibility. The sap in the wood will get hot & could turn a black color from the heat. Otherwise, I have no clue. Good luck, Jim.
  3. Thanks All . I have done a few other things. Just have to look at all you's guy's work first. Thanks
  4. Just had to renew my email & password so I could get back to the Village. Thanks to Travis for helping me. I have been a little busy, but, did find time to do a little art work on my new truck. It's a Silverado, so I used the movie theme " SILVERADO ". Anyone remember that movie. Anyway, this is what I did to my truck. Hope you recognize it. Thanks for looking.
  5. They really look great ! I love wildlife & anything with the outdoors. Nice job !!!
  6. Thank you all again. Penquin, I was a little nervous about doing the sweater, because of all the detail. I was afraid it would be too much & take away from the actual portrait. But, they were happy with it as it is, & I'm happy too. Thanks again.
  7. You certainly have patience ! You really do love scrolling. I am amazed at the detailed work & your great effort in such a project. It's beautiful ! I am trying to imagine if there are drill bits that small, let alone blades small enough for that kind of detail. Thanks for letting us enjoy your work. You can be proud to display it on any table. Thanks
  8. Larry, you did a fantastic job on that piece. I really like Kerry's patterns. They are realistic & very precise. Many holes to cut, but, worth every minute of time. I can't imagine how slow it must have been, cutting it & how many blades did you have to use? Well worth it though. Thanks for letting us enjoy it. Take Care
  9. Thank you all so much for your kind words. I really enjoy doing these. Yes to you Dan, I always make my own patterns for personal portraits. It is so heartwarming to know that someone is happy with what you do. In particular when we enjoy doing the work so much. I always look forward to the next one. Just a great big thank you to all of you. Take Care
  10. I just finished this portrait for a customer. A friend recommended me to them & I am pleased to do these types of portraits. It is a two person portrait on a 1/4in. BBirch ply & an oak frame. I really enjoy doing portraits, although I love to do wildlife too. I'm an outdoor person. It helps to have a little art talent when doing the things that I do. I even do some painting & wood burning too. Take a look & let me know how you feel about it. Thanks for looking & Take Care.
  11. I DON'T KNOW WHO DREMPT UP THAT SYSTEM, BUT, HE OR THEY SHOULD BE UNEMPLOYED. I WOULD RATHER JUST USE A HOSE IN MY TEETH, HA. GOOD LUCK
  12. Well, good luck all you top feeders, I probably would never hit the hole in the table, let alone clamp it in the bottom clamp. I can blind feed the blade up from the bottom easier, without lifting the work piece very high. Just move from cut over to the next hole. Sounds easy, but, you have to practice. I did anyway. Good Luck
  13. I have always bottom fed my works. Don't know if my arm raises high enough without bending the blade to insert in hole. When I bottom feed, I just lift the work piece up enough to remove blade from cut & insert it in the next hole without looking at the under side. It seems to work OK for me. Once in a while I will get a stubborn drill hole & the blade doesn't want to come through. No big deal. Just lift it & insert it the regular way. Good Luck
  14. David, I like the idea of doing a portrait early in your scrolling, it will give you confidence. My wife told me I could do one of her, but, I had to leave the wrinkles out, HA HA. She laughed & I did one of her when she was younger. Those spirals will be great for cutting a portrait. I do a lot of portraits & really enjoy doing them. I'm doing one right now to sell to a client. Word of mouth is how mine worked. Will be doing one also for a friend of Robert Redford. Hope she likes it. It will be for Christmas. Take Care & have fun.
  15. Hey, I'm with Rob Roy on the spirals. The Flying Dutchman blade is the only one I have ever used. They are great. Just contact Mikesworkshop.com & pick out the blades you want. Mike even has a starter pack, that he will send you. Mike, I hope I'm not out of line saying that, but, you sure have been good to all of your customers. I think you will be happy with the Flying Dutchman spirals if you choose to order them. Good Scrolling to you.
  16. Well, all is good advice. The only reason for the hold-down is to keep the blade from pulling the wood piece up & down. Really hard to follow any line with that happening. I think the saw & the quality of the blade makes all the difference in how easy it cuts, without any jerking of the work piece. Enjoy your new saw & have fun. Take Care
  17. I thank all for your good advice & comments. I think I will go with your ideas & charge more for the other couples portrait, since they are not close friends & I will not charge the same as my friend. Thanks so much & am enjoying doing portraits. I like the way they turn out & it is a challenge for me. Take care & will post the portrait when I complete it. Take Care
  18. Just wondering if someone could give an opinion on a portrait that I'm doing. I have sold one portrait of a two person portrait to a friend & was wondering if I'm charging them a reasonable price for it. It is approx. 12x12 in. on 1/4 in BBirch ply with hand made frame. I charged my friend $100 dollars for theirs & their friend wants me to do one for them. I am planning on asking $25.00 more for theirs. I don't know them, but, my friend suggested me to them, so I didn't want to charge the same. Maybe I should give my friend a reward for getting me a customer. What do you think? I will show the portrait that I am going to do. Just want some input or guidance on doing these portraits. Thanks so much for any response. Take Care I'll try to get the portrait that I finished & add it here also.
  19. Well, since you asked about the color. I have done this before, but, only once. I used a very dry brush with acrylic paint. I thought about stain, but, I can't control it like I can the paint. The one I did before was a personal portrait of a couple. I didn't do any more than the face and arms though. I have done some fish & wildlife with some color too. Thanks for your nice comments.
  20. Well, thank you all. I really like doing this stuff. I meant to add the portrait before I painted it & the one that I made the pattern from. So will do that here. I think I can post it here. Copy write on some photo's I think.
  21. Hello everyone, some time ago I did this portrait of a TV guy, called Longmire. A modern day Wyoming Sheriff. Well, today I was bored, so I added some color to it & this is how it came out. I think it added a nice touch. Take a look. Thanks
  22. Thanks all. I like doing portraits & in particular, the old Western guy's from TV & Movies. I also like doing personal portraits. I like bringing them right out of the wood. So to speak ! Take Care
  23. Would like to thank J. Lawson for his pattern of Cheyenne- Clint Walker. I cut it from 1/2 in. oak ply & colored the rope for a frame. I also cut the name out of brown Acrylic to go with the rope. Thanks again.
  24. Danny & Dick, you are just too kind. I really like doing portraits & hopefully this one will get me some more requests. The picture was a good example of what I need for a clean cutting. I will put the picture used for the pattern & you can judge from that. Normally I don't like to post someones photograph on the forum, but, it will give a good prospective when looking at the cutting. Thanks again everyone.
  25. Thanks Len. I will not charge her as much for this portrait, because she is a good friend. I think I should have included the portrait that I made the pattern from. The couple have a deep tan & that is why I added the color. Even if they were not, I would probably add some color because the ply was so white. Without any other color in the portrait, it pronounces the color more. Thanks again & take care.
