  1. I went and exchanged my saw for a new one. Funny thing is, before I left the store we checked to make sure table was flat. It wasn't! Good thing we checked, they brought out another one and it was fine. Phew!!!! Thank goodness. It was the last one they had. And what a difference a flat table makes (duh! Big smiley face). Looking forward to countless hours of scrolling. Thanks again to all of you for your opinions and help.
  2. In my post I said I was returning it. What I should've said, and what I meant was to exchange it for a new saw. I'll give the store a call today
  3. In addition to getting frustrated by the little fret pieces of waste getting stuck between the dust port, andthe warped table, my new saw has now developed an intermittent rattle. It happens at all speeds and from what i can tell the rattle is located up front in the arm. Looks like I'm returning not only the warped table but the entire saw.
  4. After much consideration, and hemming and hawing, I went out and bought the EX-21 today. I got it all set up and started making dust. At first I didn't like it becase I am used to using the 788. After a few hours of fret work, I have gotten the hang of it and enjoy it. I really Iike the way the arm stays up, the blade tensioner, and the not as aggressive cutting vs the 788. I do have a couple of complaints about it though. The dust collection port they put on these things is not good for fret work. The little pieces wood get hung up and they have no place to go. I would like to take the darn thing off, but it looks like once it's off, it's off for good. (i have a 30 day return opportunity and am afraid that might void it) Also, the table is warped where they screwed the dust port on. You can actually see the warp. Hopefully, I can get them (the store) to replace the table. Wish me luck!
  5. Thank you all very, very much for your help!! I have tried everything that has been suggested and then some and the saw keeps blowing fuses I have to agree that the windings shorted out. dewalt wants 250 for a new motor. No thanks! So I have given up on the saw. However, I did clean up and tune up the Type 1 that I was telling you all about. Holy cow! That saw runs a heck of a lot better than my type 2 ever did! The only bad thing is, I now can't justify a new saw. Dang!!!! (we'll see) I'll let ya all know in my EX-16 or EX-21 post if I do anything. Thanks again, I do appreciate it
  6. I have the go ahead to purchase a new saw. I can purchase an ex-16 for $21.00 more than a Dewalt 788. So that's a no brainer choice. However, I was given the go ahead to buy an EX-21, which is about $350.00 more than then EX-16. The EX-21 comes with stand and foot feed, which I do not need, so why pay that much more? The vase majority of my work is fret work, and Christmas ornaments. I would like to start doing intarsia and inlay. My question is, is it really worth the extra money to get the EX-21? Just because the CFO of our family gave me the go ahead to get the EX-21 is not a legitimate reason. I look forward to your answers.
  7. Here's the latest. I took the saw completely apart. I checked the brushes on the motor, they were good. I then took the motor apart. Quite a bit of carbon dust fell out. I polished the armature and cleaned every thing up. Re-assembled the motor, plugged it in, and turned it on. Fuse blew right away. So I thought it was the computer board. I then replaced that board with one from an old Type 1 that I just received. Fuse still blew. I give up. Time for a new saw, but I will save that for a new post. By the way, the Type1 that I just picked up is an old rattle trap that does run. Maybe I should combine the two and make one good one. This has been a good learning experience for me and a lot of fun. I want to thank you all very much for your help! Thanks again, Gonzo
  8. Thank you to Lucky2, dgman, and DWSUDEKEM for your input. I was able to take saw apart tonight. Rocker arms moved just fine using my hand, but still wouldn't turn on. So I checked fuse again and it was fried. I put in another fuse and that one blew right away. Put ANOTHER fuse in and that blew (definition of insanity, right?) I was able to take brushes out, and a little bit of carbon dust came out also. Brushes look fine. So, as DWSUDEKEM says it could be the motor is shot. I tried to take motor off but couldnt get the nut loose on the inside and I darn near broke the counterweight trying to loosen nut. I'm stuck and in a quandary. Any other suggestions? DeWalt Service Center said $260.00 max to fix. I wouldn't get saw for minimum 4 weeks. Or, get a new 788 for 449.00 at Home Depot. Or.... An EX16 for $599.00. By the way, the saw is 10 years old, a type 2, and it's been used heavily.
  9. Lucky 2, I'm not sure how much use the machine has. I received it used 3 years ago. I probably average 10 hours a week on it. No I have never had it serviced. Up until now never a need to. DGman, Yes I also use a foot switch. And I cover up the on/off switch
  10. The saw is a Type 2. I have no idea how old it is, my guess would be 8-10 years old
  11. I went downstairs this morning and 788 wouldn't run. I checked fuse and power, still nothing. I moved the top blade holder rocker arm and she fired up. Now this evening I was scrolling and the saw siezed up. Rocker arm won't budge at all. (motor is not hot at all). Has this happened to any of you? Is there anyone that can help me?
  12. Thank you to all who gave their opinion on this topic. Especially to Hotshot for pointing out the 4" maximum depth. I am going to check into this tool and also the plunge router. Will let you all know.

Where would a person find the Converse pattern?
  14. Hello to all. I am wondering if any of you have the Dremel Rotary Work Station, 220-01. In theory, this looks like it could be right up our alley for drilling small holes for fret work. If you do have one, what is your opinion of this tool?
  15. I use Johnson paste wax on all my tool surfaces also. My 788TypeII table has what I call a rough machined surface. I am a machinist by trade so am not impressed with the finish at all. But ig I use the paste wax often the wood slides very nicely. I like the idea that CharleyL had about using on the gears and slides etc. I'll have to give that a try.
  16. I also scroll in the basement during the winter. Pretty darned cold here in Minnesota with an unheated garage. I hook my shop vac up to cyclone dust collector and tie the hose up underneath scroll saw near blade. It doesn't seem to get too dusty in the house. I have a model railroad layout about 15 feet from where I scroll and it doesn't look like the layout gets any more dusty than normal. About the only bad thing about scrolling downstairs is that it takes time away from model railroading. Poor 'ol me (Big smiley face).
  17. I have been using the blue painters tape between pattern and wood. It does get a little "scary" when it comes time to removing the tape from the delicate frets. 90% of my fret work is done with Baltic birch plywood. For those of you that use paint thinner, does it affect the ply's on the plywood?
  18. Try using shellac. It has a very glossy finish. And it's super hard once it cures

  20. I have this tool. Works pretty darn well. And it is much, much cheaper than forstner bits However, and its a huge however, you just have to be careful and use a slow rpm and a slow feed rate due to it being a single tooth cutter. You also will need a scrap price of lumber underneath it.
  21. I agree with Orangeman. I have had better luck with the Pegas Modifed Geometry blades.
  22. That is very cool! I love the green backer. Was that from Steves "weekly" e-mail?
  23. . Thank you,Matt
  24. Can I ask what the other forum is? This is the only one I know about/follow when I have time.
