  1. My son was a career Navy pilot. Flew F-18 Super Hornet. One his jobs once was to schedule and coordinate the fly overs at sporting events. He did several NASCAR races. Instead of flying over the event he scheduled himself to be at the event coordinating. One day when I got home there was a message on my answering machine. There was a roar in the background and then he was yelling into the phone saying "I thought you might want to hear what it is like to be in Jeff Gorden's pit during a race. They are coming around the track now!" Then all I could here was this massive roar and nothing else. He had met Jeff Gorden when he was down in the pit area. Mr. Gorden and all the other drivers went out of their way to acknowledge military personal. Gorden invited him to watch the race from his pit. He met Gorden several times after that and Gorden always remember his name and went out of his way to talk to my son. Gave him one of his pit crew hats signed by him. Guess he was a very nice person.
  2. I was given some mahogany once and I used it to build a model of an Auburn Speedster. I love working with mahogany.
  3. Nice cutting. Your sister needs to find a new driver to support. Gordon retired, didn't he?
  4. Great to have you join us. Like TJR stated some use wood burning to enhance their pictures. I don't because I have worked very little with a wood burner. I know I would screw it up. Most scroll the picture and them but a "backer" on it to make the cutting stand out. I use flat black posterboard mostly, other paint plywood. Any number of ways to do it. There are great western, Native American, horse patterns in the pattern library, all free. Down load some print the our and go at it.
  5. Great to have you join in. Hope you enjoy your stay.
  6. Oh, thanks, Ron. What a great site. I will be spending so time there for sure. I love to watch how they do that kind of woodwork. They always make it look sooooo easy!
  7. I'm a big LED fan and like Dan replacing other light fixtures with LED slowly. The first to go was in my stair well to the basement. Where the light is the ceiling is around 14 ft. up. Always had to get a latter, maneuver it into the stairwell and dangle up there to change the light bulb. Every few months. Last time the bulb went out I replaced the whole fixture with an LED light. I should never has to change it again, in my remaining lifetime. I have replaced my magnifier/fluorescent on my scroll saw with one that has real glass for the magnifier and LED light around it. Big difference for me. Besides "LED" is so much easier to spell than "fluorescent"!!!
  8. So glad to have you join us. Enjoy your stay.
  9. That's a beauty!
  10. Great picture! "Go ahead, make my day" was the first thing that came to my mind...
  11. This is the last small Basswood piece of wood I had, so I have to move on for a while. I do like to cut in this type of wood, so I am going to put a riser block on my band saw and order some thick Basswood slabs to resaw to the thickness I need,,,, that is the plan anyway. I order the riser block kit this morning. This is a Charles Dearing pattern. Been wanting to cut it for a long time. I will do it again one day, only larger scale. I really like the pattern. Thanks for looking.
  12. That is some fine work. I love the models. Great one.

    Looks great!
  15. The more you use it the more you will like it. Congratulations.
  16. I think the hardest part would be finding a place that does it. You would have to ship your table top, both ways if it is not close by, which would really add to the cost. I think it would be a nice finish though, just probably cost prohibitive. You can purchase spray cans of Teflon lubricant that may be good to use instead of wax. I have never tried it. I saw where Amazon wants over $25 for a can of it and most other places I saw it, it was around $13.
  17. Very nice!
  18. GORGEOUS! Don't like like new scroller stuff to me. What size spiral are you using? Stack cutting?
  19. Mighty pretty Dick. I really like the backing that way. Great cutting. She is going to love it. I am working on another one using my last piece of Basswood. I have been using the 2/0 PS straight blade for most of it. Last evening I put in my 3/0 spiral to do some thin lines, and oh my, it was like renewing an acquaintance with an old friend! I use the spiral the rest of the evening. It just make more since to me than swing that piece of wood all over.

Ha, I don't get it, but very nice cutting and framing. Different backgrounds and all, very artsy.
  21. Some super nice pictures Penquin. Great stuff!
  22. Welcome to our great little town! Glad you joined us. 72 is a good year for us scrollers. Look forward to getting to know you.
  23. I mount a round over bit in my router table and run the wood against the bearing on the bit. Watch to keep fingers away from the bit.
  24. Much safer with a table, in my opinion. Does not have to be an expensive fancy table and for what your are talking about you don't need a huge router. I helped a friend build this bench top one years ago when he first started woodworking. He still uses it. http://www.woodstore.net/plans/shop-plans/tool-bases-stands/2428-Benchtop-Router-Table.html
  25. You been busy. They look very nice. I'm thinking they will being you some business.
