  1. There is always a better way but if you wait for the Germans to do it, you'll be in Paradise first. They never change anything.
  2. Ok Dave, how do you make yours? I love learning new things.
  3. Welcome to the Village Jim. I'm in Huntington Beach, Ca. so we might be neighbors. I too had a full shop at one time but now I'm in a 9 x 13 storage room in our mobile home park. Just big enough for me to get myself in trouble from time to time. As for your manual, there are many manuals available right here on SSV but if not, do a google search for yours online. They are out there in PDF format and so far, I've found every manual I've searched for. Best of luck and be sure to show us your stuff. We all love pics.
  4. Hey glad you're back. I guess. I've been here since 2015 so we must have missed each other. I look forward to your input. As you can see, I'm pretty active on the forum and have gone from a complete newbie to somewhat of a "know-it-all". I learn something new every time I log in. Show us a few pics of your work so we can get a feel for what you like to make. Welcome.
  5. The main reason I hate any changes to our everyday software is that if it's one that my wife uses, I have to go through the learning curve to explain it to her and answer her question of "why are they messing with something that's not broken"? She hates changes of any kind. We've been married for 50 years and she forbid me from changing so I'm still the same "lovable" person she married. LOL! I remember a few years ago when Gmail decided that they just had to make a bunch of changes to their platform, I wrote a nasty letter to their software engineers telling them that they should be ashamed of changing stuff just so they could justify their exorbitant salaries. And Microsoft, oh, don't get me started on their updates that always seem to mess something up that used to work just fine. Their latest update caused a problem with my PC and I'm still fighting that. With all that said, I appreciate all that Travis does to keep SSV running smoothly and if he has to make some changes, so be it. A bit of a "heads-up" would be nice though so we can prepare for something different to pop up on our screens. I use both my PC and my phone for just about everything so I appreciate knowing ahead of time when a change is coming.
  6. I hate change just for the sake of changing.
  7. I'll bet they are throwing all parts into production of new saws. There is no profit in repairs.
  8. The hole where the pin goes will have to be enlarged in order to insert a sleeve or bushing.
  9. Cherokeewoods.com Or look up Cherokee Wood Products. There is a special section for scroll saw wood.
  10. Modularhose.com or Amazon.
  11. I buy from Cherokee and they ship me wood up to 4 feet. I've not checked anything longer. Not sure what UPS restrictions are. Why do you need such long boards? I know that Iggy buys his poplar at Lowe's. I thing he buys 4 ft. lengths.
  12. So that casting is soft. It needs a steel insert for the pin to ride in.
  13. A few years back, I bought a book called "Boxes, Bowls & Baskets". It's out of print now but there are used ones floating around. The pattern is by John Nelson.
  14. Sounds like wet wood to me. Buying pine for the home stores can be a lesson in frustration. It's never dried enough. Especially down where you are. I'd try to order some from one of the suppliers in a drier climate. You've been scrolling long enough now to know the basics and it doesn't sound like you have done anything wrong. As suggested, take a piece of scrap wood that you have had laying around and see how it responds to the same setup you are using on the new wood. I'll bet it works great.
  15. Not sure if you know what my system is. I have pieced it together from a vac on ebay, a cyclone from Amazon and some other odds and ends. I have about $80 in each one so far. I know the one that Seyco sells is pretty pricey and that's why I am doing my own.
  16. Excellent! My system is much smaller and probably doesn't do as good a job as yours. I just wanted something totally portable.
  17. My thoughts also.
  18. Ok, I give.. It never happened. YET!
  19. I have two Ex's and I built stands for both of them. I like to sit at my saw. I made them with 7" wheels at the back end of the stand and rigged up some pvc handles so that I can move the saws around like a wheelbarrow. I now have incorporated small vacs on both of them with cyclones and cpap hoses for dust collection. I'll post pics one of these days.
  20. I recall that Tony fixed the last one but I thought it was the big bushing/bolt the arm pivoted on. This new problem is something else, right? Pics might help.
  21. Brenda, I'm trying to recall, isn't your saw the same as a Hegner? It seems that I remember you having a problem with the bolt/bushing wearing out on your other saw. Am I right or did I dream it?
  22. As Les stated, just about all scroll saws have some front to back motion. I think that is what they refer to as "aggression". It can be adjusted out of some saws quite easily and on others it requires some elongating of screw holes to move the lower blade mechanism one way or another. On the later model Hawks, there is an adjustment for that also. I'm not sure about the H/F saw. Anyway, if you can't adjust it out of the saw, you will just have to get used to it and let it be. The only saw that I think had a perfectly up/down stroke is the Eclipse but it is no longer made. The Excalibur/Excelsior/Pegas saws are the easiest to adjust.
  23. That was going to be my suggestion too. I buy mine from Cherokee Wood Products mostly because of the fact that they cater to scrollers, Chris who runs the online is top-notch and it's less than an hour from me. I try to get a list of what I'm going to be needing and then email my order to Chris. Once he has it cut/milled to what I need, he emails me and I go pick it up. Their pricing is great too. Shipping cost is the killer though.
  24. Very nice work Brenda!
  25. Sounds like you were in the right place at the right time. Congrats on a great deal.
