I sort of agree with you Kevin. My Dewalt type 1 was very smooth too. What I have found from all the saws I've had so far, and I've had one of each of the top 4, at some speed they all have a vibration. So far, I've been lucky enough to find the sweet spot and it seems to turn out that it's my preferred cutting speed. I am not one who wants or needs to run full out. I enjoy cutting at mid range and lower. I'm not in a hurry so saw speed doesn't mean much to me. Also, I found that tuning the motor/agression of the EX type saws does make a big difference in the vibration. I am in the process of buying another Hegner 18 inch saw that has all the latest upgrades already done to it. If,after I get it, it turns out to be better than my last Hegner, I'm going to sell the Hawk. Not for any reason other than it is just too big for my small shop. And, I hate how tall it is. With the Hegner, I negotiated a price without the stand. I'll build a low stand for it just like my EX.

Thanks, I'm going to sit here and drink a beer while I digest all those x's and o's. I used to be pretty good in math but that was over 60 years ago. I forgot every bit of algebra that I ever knew. But thanks for all that anyway.

Is there some formula for deciding the "size" of your ellipse? How do you go about that?

Rolf, I looked around at those switches and found them to be pretty pricey. Do you have a source that might be better? I like your setup and I might just have to rip it off. Ooops! Did I just say that?

Kevin, that's great info but I think the biggest majority of us do it for the run and relaxation. Not a business. I recently made that round jewelry box for a gift but I posted pics of it on FB and a local friend wanted me to make one for her and asked what it would cost. I told her that I had probably 20 hours total in it and even at minimum wage of $15/hr, it would run her $300. She thought that sounded fair. I about fell off my shop stool. I never thought in a million years that anybody would actually pay me to make something and reward me for my time. Restored my faith in humanity. Sort of.

Thanks, I did just that and found that I had saved the pattern but at my age, the gray matter was keeping it from coming forward. I will have to make a couple of them. I do need to buy some BB so I can whip out these quick projects.

Rolf, I have done a couple of compound projects using 1 1/2" stock and really never noticed a problem at that point. I don't recall putting my fingers under those arms but if I did, I had no problems with it. I think it's just what you have gotten used to doing. JMHO!

Bill, I had the original EX clamps and they had a few miles on them when I bought my saw. I managed to cobble a piece of nylon screw to fix the worn out one that was in it. I got it all working fine but it still had a bit of vibration. Not much, just a little. I did the motor/aggression adjustment and got some of it out but it was still there. Anyway, I bought the Pegas clamps and once installed and adjusted I found that almost all of the vibration was gone. At least at the speed that I enjoy cutting. Also, the whole mechanism has been "re-engineered" to eliminate the nylon screw adjuster. It is just a much better piece of equipment. If I still had my Dewalt, I would have installed the Pegas/EX clamps on it. Not the ones designed for the Dewalt. I like the lever over the tension wheel and figured that becoming used to just one would be better in the long run. But, I sold it so it's a moot point now.

Thanks Rolf for the great review. I'm sure many folks will benefit from it. On a separate subject, your stand, I'm curious as to why you or others don't mount the saw with the single leg closest to the operator so you can "straddle" it. I find it much more comfortable that way and there is more room for your foot switch.

Bill, I have to agree completely. I had a Dewalt prior to the EX and I never gave it a thought either. I don't do sign or plaque work and those large size portraits are for others to cut. Me, I just do small stuff and will never feel the need to have a larger table.

Very nice set up. In my shop, I can play solitaire, in yours, you could play tackle football. I SO envy you.

Plus 2 on ash. I made the little round jewelry box out of 3/4" ash and it seemed easy to cut. I used #5 mgt Pegas blades on it.
