  1. I can't imagine watching tv on an ipad. We have a 55" and at times I wish it was bigger. My niece and her husband have a 70". I love that one but we don't have a wall big enough. Ray
  2. I guess I'm still "old school" when it comes to reading. I love to read. I have a Kindle and use it when it bed but for my upright reading pleasure, I still prefer a book. Paper backs mostly. As for magazines, I still subscribe to a couple. And I read my newspaper every morning. My eyes won't take too much reading on the computer but like someone else said, Youtube is my "go-to" for how to do it stuff. My magazine subs are now limited to both publications of Woodcarving Illustrated and Scrollsawing and Woodshop from Fox Publishing. Even those are stacking up on me though. I can't seem to stop the one from the NRA. I have tried and tried but they just keep on coming. Oh well................... Ray
  3. For anybody who lives anywhere near Southern California, twice a year down in Vista, there is an open house at the Antique Farm Equipment club and they put on quite a show. The last time I was down there, they had an old steam tractor (1915 ish) hooked up with a twisted belt to a saw mill and they were milling logs into planks with it. Very fascinating to watch. There is a tractor parade everyday and lot's of stationary engines running. If you ever get the chance, it's well worth the drive down there. Ray
  4. I love this stuff and spend way too much time on youtube watching it. So, I for one , would love seeing any videos you have. It's fascinating to me. Thanks for these pics.
  5. I think I've seen these at Costco. I'll have to take a closer look. Ray
  6. I know Dick. You are talking about the kind that is thick felt and made for sliding furniture on hardwood floors. My floor in my shop is just plain plywood. Not slick at all. Or am I just misunderstanding you completely? Am I missing something?
  7. Don't ever forget Iggy, it's a HOBBY!
  8. Ok, a new idea. How about laying a couple of 4x4's on the garage floor and laying the saw over sideways onto the 4x's and then fashion some sort of a combination of wood and create a platform to support the saw upside down so you can at least get down on your knees and work on it? Maybe a foam rubber knee pad would be good to kneel on. I'm just spitballing here but if you want to work on it bad enough, there are ways. I have always been able to fashion something in order to get the job done. Just sayin..........
  9. I don't recall mine being THAT heavy but I was 40 years younger then. Oh well, it was an idea. Maybe you can find someone to help you.
  10. I know this may not be too helpful but might it be easier to work on the saw if you were to turn it upside down and place it between two sawhorses? I had a saw similar to yours that I bought new in 1986 so I know what you are working with. It just seems like you should be able to turn it over and get it up where you can work on it. I hope this helps. Ray
  11. Thanks, I also was thinking about a set of lift up casters for a workbench. They only come in a set of four though. I wrote to the company to see if they would sell them to me individually or in a set of 3 but so far, no answer. I just hate to waste anything and the one left over would never get used.
  12. I don't think so Dick. They are meant for a hardwood floor if we are talking about the same thing. I have moved a lot of furniture with them but I don't see them working on my plywood floor. I'm leaning toward 3 of these from Harbor Freight. Or at least two of them and lift the front leg to move it.
  13. Why is it that the "Honey-do's" always win out over "fun" stuff?
  14. Sam where are you in So Cal? I'm in Huntington Beach.

  15. I'm one of those people who has many interests and whenever something new comes to mind, the first thing I do is go looking for a forum of others who have the similar interest. I look not only for information, guidance and knowledge but also I am looking for the comraderie that I find in these forums. This particular one is one of my favorites because I am treated well by those of you who have been here a long time. So far, every silly question I have asked has been answered by many of you. It's a veritable fountain of knowledge. I found the same thing when I went looking for help with woodcarving and found it at the Wood Carving Illustrated forum. Another great bunch of folks there too. I want to thank you all. Ray
  16. Well Dan, I'm also on the West coast and you have already been a big help to me so I guess it works both ways. Thanks. Ray
  17. Thanks for the great pics of your system. I will use them as reference while building mine. While I have a DW788 instead of the Excalibur, most of your ideas will cross over in one way or another. With your permission I'm going to download and save your pics. Ray
  18. Well, I'm the new kid on the block and have no experience so I bought the pattern DVD that is available from Scrollsaw Workshop. It has around a thousand patterns for pretty much all levels of expertise. And then there is the pattern library here too. I suppose most all the other scroll saw websites have a similar offering. Ray
  19. Yes, miter saws are the worst. I won't even use mine inside my small shop. It goes outside when used. It's so darn heavy that I try very hard to find ways around using it. I may sell it and buy a smaller one. I don't need a 12" anymore. As to the vac, I was wondering if my vac could be "customized" to run variable. I know that in some cases, it depends on the type of motor. I don't know if they changed motors in the early to late vacs or not. It would be interesting to know. I'm going to try setting up my saw with 1" pvc if only to possibly cut down on any whistling at the tips. I'll have to get my configuration first and then order some of the Loc-Line pieces as needed. I hope I'm not making a mistake that will make the whole thing too bulky. I'll do some more thinking on that. Also, I'm thinking about incorporating some sort of cyclone separator into the system. Lot's to think about. Thanks for your input. Oh, and to your first question, it was on Craigslist. Ray
  20. This is picture of the stand I built. I wasn't quite finished here. After finishing it up, I found that I liked it better with the single leg in front for me to straddle. I would like to figure out some sort of wheels for it also but I don't want to give up it's solidness. It sets very still and no vibration. I have also acquired an old office chair that is adjustable so it's very comfortable to sit at my saw. I was just reading above that one person put 3/4" ply under all the legs of his saw. That gives me an idea of how I can incorporate some sort of wheels that can be off the floor until needed. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
  21. By my calculations, that's a hundred bucks an hour. Not bad. Especially considering that it appears you are living in Paradise. We really do need an "Envy" symbol. Ray
  22. I guess I should edit this post to explain what I mean. The tiny little blades are so difficult, for me anyway, to keep in the correct position to install in the blade holders. I have a terrible time to keep the cutting edge to the front so I take the blade in one hand, find the flat side with the cutting edge to the front and stick it to my pencil magnet. Then it's easy to put it into the clamps. Maybe you folks don't have a problem but I sure did until I discovered this tip on another forum or youtube. I don't recall where. Ray
  23. I think I'm going to try to set up some kind of cyclone separator and then I'll work on an over/under vac system like you guys have. I like the flex lines (Line Loc?)too. I'll have to get some of that stuff on order once I see what I need. Do you recomment 3/4" or 1" pvc piping? The guy I bought this thing from suggested some sort of a bleeder to lessen the vacuum when not needed. Do you folks have anything like that incorporated? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm all ears. Ray
  24. I drove up to Redondo Beach today and picked up my new addition. I think I got a good deal. $170. It's 8 years old and in mint condition. Ray
  25. No thanks Len. I was just trying to be jocular. Ray
