  1. Glad to see & hear from you Scott. And, also happy to hear your wife is mended. Sorry to hear that you moved from the beach. I always envied you. Anyway, now let's hope you have more time to get back to scrolling and posting here at the Village.
  2. Kevin, I was looking at those arms and saw that they seem to be of some sort of a tapered piece curling inward. So, I think if you have some forstner bits you could do some concentric circles moving inward and reducing the sizes and it would appear that they were "swirling". I was thinking of how to make the tapered effect also. It's going to be a real head scratcher though. If you do make one, it might almost be a good idea to make extra pieces and parts as you go along so that if you screw up something you have a fall-back on hand. As for all the different types of woods, the one pictured seems to just be painted. That's how I might go about it too and just make it out of whatever you have on hand.
  3. My thoughts exactly. Life in prison takes on a whole new meaning once you hit 80. Being totally taken care of for the rest of my days doesn't sound all that bad and if I'm not mistaken, most of the prisons have workshops. Win-win!
  4. Personally, I think we should do away with most of the laws and let the citizens fight it out amongst themselves. It won't take long.
  5. I don't think any woodburning stove is legal here. I'll have check. If they turn off our gas I may have to burn my precious scraps.
  6. You know Kevin, Your wood stove would be illegal in California.
  7. It really is a nice yard. And the young guy who runs their online store, Chris, is so nice to work with. If I ask him for a special thickness that they don't usually offer, he adds it to the list for the planer shop when they have time. They don't offer anything in 3/8" but one of my patterns calls for 3/8" walnut. So, I ordered a 6 ft x 12" piece from them. Now I have plenty for a long while. Great people to deal with and their prices are so reasonable. They have a special section for scroll saw wood. Cherokeewood.com.
  8. Whenever I take a drive out to Cherokee Wood Products, I always come away with a couple of boxes with cutoffs that they would otherwise put through the shredder. I've got some very nice "scraps" of purple heart and other woods that I can't identify. Great place to buy from.
  9. I have 2 Ex saws and have cut bowls with no problem. I think if you loosen the table hold down bolts and adjust the table so that it doesn't contact the blade at full tilt and then retighten them. You may have to readjust your blade clamps to compensate. Once you get this done you shouldn't have to do it again.
  10. I quit drinking when they invented funnels.
  11. A beautiful job all around. Your scrolling is top-notch!

I have some basswood slabs that I've been saving. Where can I find the pattern? Yours is beautiful and inspirational.
  13. Nothing can ruin a day quicker than a back problem. I have a bad back but nothing that can be fixed. I have one leg 3/8" shorter than the other. I've tried lifts and all the other things that have been suggested but after 80 years of being crooked, it just gets sore quickly. I realize that there is more "crooked" about me than my back. LOL.
  14. Niiiiice! I'm still using my old office chair but it works. No back problems though. Glad you got something comfortable. I have a tall chair like your Craftsman and use it at my Hegner. Your wife did good.
  15. She sounds like a real witch.
  16. Welcome from So Cal. I was in your shoes about 8-9 years ago. It's addicting for sure. There is a ton to learn but the curve is easy. Whatever your first completed project is, sign and date it. Put it away for a year. You'll be able to see how much you've improved in that first year. Practice patterns are boring. Find something fun to cut even if it's above your skill level. Just have fun. Ask questions and post pics. We all love pics. Tell us about your saw, where you live, anything you want to share. The Village truly is the friendliest group around. Glad you found us.
  17. I must have stuttered!
  18. Happy 2023 to all. Lets pray for a better year.
  19. That's sorta what I have in mind. Cut out a wall hanger or plaque and the take the knife to it to shape all the edges and give it more of a 3-D effect. I'm thinking about 3-D cutting chess pieces and then refining them with a knife. There are many things if you let your mind wander out of the box.
  20. Great idea and a good start on carving. Get one good carving knife and a leather strop. Keep it sharp. And get a glove to protect your hand. Safety first.
  21. I enjoyed seeing your work. Please post more of it.
  22. Very nice work. This exactly why I started this topic. I hope more carvers show themselves.
