Don you are right.never put a block of wood on the lathe yet, as a mater of fact it is still sitting on a furniture dolly waiting for a stand .I almost have as much money in Acc. as I have in the lathe

A lot of junk out there.Believe me i looked.One I looked at locally has not been plugged in for 10 years and it was rusted to the point that he had to oil it to move anything.I think he wanted what he paid for it

I went and did it .Ended up with a Rikon 70-100.After do a lot of research it came down to this.It 6 speed easy speed change.No bending over.12" swing 16" bed with the option to extend.All of the electronic VS saws seemed to have problems.I could not afford a Lathe with mechanical speed control.I bought a set of 3 Grizzly chisels.A pen starter kit.that should be good enough to get my feet wet The biggest thing with a lathe is keeping the Chisels sharp .Well about 5 years ago i bout a Tormek T7 and have gotten pretty good at sharpening my wood chisels,Plane irons .and all of my knives

I know what everybody is talking about.Down that road before.So far all of the used Lathes i have been looking at was either junk or people want more than they are worth.Because it was made in the USA 40 years ago does not make it worth more than what the original price was.i have been doing my homework.Not in any Hurry.I am leaning towards new.And a China lathe is not out of the question at this point.I have 4 Wen bench tools that I use now as a hobbyist and they perform beyond my expatations. But I also have Festool, Fein,Bosch,and USA made Porter Cable that I used for my business.So I have an open mind when it comes to tools.I will keep you posted and right now all the advice is very helpful.Anybody want to sell a lathe

How many SSV Members are also Wood Turners I am getting really interested in it .I do not know witch way to start.Mini, Midi.or a full size lathe.I have been looking on CL for a used one.i guess the first time a chisel flies out of my hand I will sell it.That is why I am looking used.

I used Inlace. I angle cut the figure and set it in about 3/16 .Glued the figure is place and filled in with the liquid Inlace.Sanded both sides and sealed it with Lacquer.I watched Steve Good use Inlace in one of his Videos.He used it on a key chain.That is where you need to use a real mask with a good filter when sanding that Inlace.

Dan it cut easier than I thought.FDUR7did the trick.Cut slow and steady.That is a Heavy cross

My first Rosewood and also Inlace projects.The figure on the Rosewood Cross is a Cutoff from another cross

I cut the Rosewood and it cut like Butter with very smooth cuts .I have been experimenting with the finish and came down to 2.A natural finish with a fine sanding and Dark Bri-wax or I really like the look of a very thin coat of Shellac with a fine sanding before and after.I used Acid tone wipe before the coat of Shellac It feels natural without being oily as apposed to a wax finish.

Thanks Kevin. It seems Scroll Sawing Ranks up there with With sky diving,Mountain climbing.Crossing a street in Downtown Phila. in rush Hour with a cell phone in your ear.Just watch what you are doing and use common sense.I am 73 YO and still learning.

That was what I was thinking of a coat of good of wax or should I try a harder finish.I do have all dust blowing away from me and a good dust collector

First time using Rosewood.I have a piece 7/8 thick .Plan on cutting a cross with it. I was thinking about using #7 UR for a few inside cuts and a #9 UR for the perimeter.What kind of finish. Treat it like other Hardwoods. This piece of wood is very dense.Think the Hegner will meet it's match.Thanks Tony

Thanks everyone.I made about 30 or 40 of these little Angels so far.I have been giving them away to family and freinds.I have also given quite a few away at the Cancer Treatment center.Like I said before everybody loves angels.Well since I changed the designed my wife decided to take some to work to see if anyone would be interested She sold 3 the first day for $15.00 each.Well that seemed pretty good to me until she hit me with her commission.Guess what.It is cheaper to give them away. Only kidding.i would not have to worry about them breaking now So I do not mind selling them. Steve has 3 sizes on his pattern I keep the other 2 with the original halo They look nicer and a lot stronger because of there size and they will either be hung on a wall or on a stand

I smell a Rat in a wood pile.I wander if Jet and Excalibur are the same company. There are Plenty of Jet saws for sale .Maybe they stopped production on the Excalibur to pump out the Jet.

I have been using 1/2" cut offs. When I get enough pieces i cut a couple at a time.

Made a little modification on Steves small Angels.Most of the ones i gave away were being used for there key chains and the halos were breaking.So with the solid halo and a poly finish they should hold up pretty good.

What is going on with Excalibur.It seems like they sold like Hot Cakes.Nobody has them in stock. Woodcraft site has it back in stock Dec. 2016.That means Jan-.Feb 2017.If somebody is looking for a new saw they might be tempted to go Jet.

Robert that Hegner that Isaw on CL for 175.00 it went down to 100.00 and sold that day.
