  1. I think the internet is the cause of the demise of many publications. Web sites, you tube and other digital media. Even TV has been a big impact. I used to read Look and Life magazines. I used to have the Britannica encyclopedias and dictionaries. Now, who needs them?
  2. Great response from you guys! Terrific shop photos. I love seeing them.
  3. Hi Jim, The small band saw is a 9" Horrible Fright saw. For the cheap price it serves me well It is the one I use all the time. Size is the limiter. I have made a small sled and use it for cutting pen blanks as well cutting out wood for smaller scrolling projects. If I were to buy it again I would want the steel bed. Mine is aluminum and the demo at HF is steel. The Craftsman is an old 12". Fortunately it is in perfect shape and one of the finer things Craftsman made. I bought it on CL for $100, a real bargain. If I were to have only one and did not mind the size limitation of 10" I would look at the 10" Rikon. I do not have one but it has an excellent reputation. I would certainly consider it over most all the other cheap brands like Ryobi, Wen, and others. I have no problem with others it is just that Rikon has excellent customer service and makes a quality product. My HF has done well so far but I would perhaps not buy another.
  4. Those are amazing projects. I like the first Piranha! Don't want to stick my finger anywhere near.
  5. Very nice butterfly. I love to cut pine. Pine is fine!
  6. Those are all great but have to pick the ship as my favorite. I just like sailing ships.
  7. What cool little fellers. Thanks for showing.
  8. I can see them just fine. A beautiful piecr.
  9. I didn't get it.
  10. I understand but lots of folks do have time.
  11. Hi Kevin. Thank you for the explanation. I sent both the controller and the motor. Whatever it costs is OK with me. I had looked into the controller and saw some amateurish cold solder joints. The previous owner tried fixing it. Bushton said the motor need a bushing they did not have so I am waiting. I am happily cutting with my 216VS so I don't mind the wait. It may well be the controller caused a motor problem. If they send both new I'll be happy as the saw is like new. Again thank you.
  12. Come on guys. There are hundreds of you out there. Join the fun. This something in which everyone can participate in even if it's your saw on the kitchen table. It's all fun and you can get a barrel of ideas. The water is fine, JUMP IN!
  13. Hi Draftin'. Wonderful workshops. Even more important is the wonderful legacy your dad left you.
  14. Hi Jim. I see you are blessed with three scroll saws. Looks like you have all the right equipment to have a classic workshop.
  15. A nice shop and a nifty dust collection system you have.
  16. Is that Kosher?
  17. I started scrolling a couple of years ago. I look at a lot of you tube and sow some videos. I had a Ryobi scroll saw I used to cut off small pieces of wood used for model railroad structures. It did not work out well. A few years ago I purchased a scroll saw from Grizzly to try cutting out brass clock plates. It was fairly robust but was so poorly made I gave it away. After viewing several scrolling videos I purchased a 14" Hawk. I knew nothing about Hawk except it was purported to be good quality. It was made to be used on a ShopSmith. It had no motor of course so I provided a motor with a two step sheave. It worked beautifully. I then saw a 216VS Hawk which I am using now. I also have a 220VS Hawk ultra which is waiting a controller and motor repair from Bushton which I should receive soon. I do not scroll for profit. In fact most of what I cut just stacks up in a corner. I have neither the strength or interest in selling. I enjoy sitting at the saw listening to it, relaxed with not a care in the world. I've also done a lot of pen making but find scrolling much more relaxing. Finding SSV has been the highlight of scrolling. What a fabulous community. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Probably more than you want to know.
  18. Can someone explain the problematic motors to me? What was the problem? On what Hawks were they used?
  19. Nice to see your shop. I love the amount of room you have. Appears you have things well arranged with things on wheels.
  20. Progress may be slow but it seems to be working. Still prayin'.
  21. I have no idea how my photos came out like this. I tried doing thumbnails but could not figure it out. Anyway the shop is 8x14' and is in one corner of the garage. The last three photos are at the rear of the shop where I have my other stuff like 2 belt sanders, table saw, the box I use for spraying patterns and for spray painting, band saw, etc. Last photo is my 12L14 steel is stacked. I don't show the pedestal grinder or metal band saw.
  22. Mayo jars, thanks Dan. I use lots of mayo so I can get all my cholesterol in one shot. I'll save them. I'm thinking I could place wax paper on the top before screwing on the lid. I also like to see through the glass.
  23. Thanks John. I'm presuming they are like paint cans with a pop off lid.
