  1. I plan to set up a permanent dust collection solution for my saw, I just don't know where the saw is going to end up yet. Until I fill my shop up with a few of the big ticket items I want (table saw, band saw, etc.) I don't think anything I have is in its "spot". The shop set up will change a few more times before I am happy with it.
  2. Just a quick post about face masks. I never used a mask nearly as much as I should, mostly because I couldn't find one that didn't fog up my glasses. To me, using a power tool and not being able to see exactly what you are doing is not very safe practice. I didn't want a huge respirator because I could see myself just not wearing it due to the size. I happened to see a guy wearing one of these RZ Industries masks and thought, "wow, that looks goofy". But I researched them and they seemed pretty legit. Well, they are. I am very glad I bought this thing. It is much more comfortable that a normal rubber band mask and I get ZERO fog up to my glasses. It comes with a nice little carrying case so it stays clean when not in use and also an extra set of filters. It also comes in 3 sizes so you can find the perfect fit, I've got a big head and this fits perfectly. You can find on amazon or RZmask.com Just wanted to share in case anyone else was looking for an upgraded mask without feeling like you're wearing a gas mask. Attached a pic of what I'm working on, just because. Have a good day folks.
  3. Rooster! Good Work
  4. Honestly, I'm still just having fun playing with the dust collection. The light hum through the floors scares the heck outta my wife's cats, so I am never stingy about using it.
  5. Here is where I am at in the new shop. Now that I finally have the room, I am starting to grow my tool collection. I haven't been at this very long at all, so my shop feels a little empty compared to some of the others, and everything is still shiny and clean. There will soon be a table saw under my filtration unit so I won't smoke my head on it all the time.
  6. I would love to sit down to a game with you! I'm afraid I wouldn't be much of a challenge, I would be staring at the craftsmanship the whole time. Great work.
  7. Looks great! I really like this piece. Well done.
  8. I will give it a shot as well. I use mostly straight blades but I am pretty efficient with the spiral and use them on some of my fretwork when I can get away with it.
  9. I have a 20" and have only used it's full capacity a couple times. That being said, those couple times made it worth buying the 20" and I highly doubt I would ever buy anything smaller. Unless I planned on having more than one saw, then I might not be opposed to something a little smaller.
  10. Travis here. But Chunk works just as well. I've been answering to it for years now.
  11. Nitrile Gloves for me. I have a box in my shop, staining area, kitchen, and garage. This doesn't mean I always remember to put them on. I usually remember once my fingertips are stained ebony or stuck together.
  12. Great cut. Thanks for pointing out Jerry's idea. I hadn't seen that post and it is an issue I haven't quite figured out yet. I will give it a shot on my next piece.
  13. Ouch!
  14. Here he is framed up.
  15. Well put. Straight to someone on the saw isn't straight to someone standing behind them.
  16. I tend to grab a bigger blade than normal when I am trying to get a straight line. I've gotten pretty consistent with the Olson #9 Precision Cut Reverse blades.
  17. I am going to mix up some blue dye I have and try to get a grayish-blue backer on it. Almost the color of the floor in the picture. Any ideas on a good wood for the frame that would go with the project? I'm kind of thinking about using some old beat up barn wood.
  18. Good idea. I will have to throw one of those together. Thanks for sharing.
  19. Thank you, it is a Charles Dearing pattern.
  20. Finished up this evening. 1/4 curly maple cut with FD UR #1 blades. 12x8
  21. Before buying anything else, try skipping the clear tape. I haven't had this problem since I quit using it. The painters tape underneath is enough.
  22. I started on my saw almost a year ago, with no experience at all. I cut through the same sample patterns that you are and had the same thoughts. If you would have showed me then what I would be able to do by this point, I would not have believed you. But I loved the relaxation I found at the saw, so I kept at it and before I knew it, those tight corners weren't so intimidating anymore. And to touch on what a few others have said, we are always our own biggest skeptic. We know what the pattern looked like as a 2-D, black and white, piece of paper. When that paper comes off, so do the mistakes. My wife and I did a craft show at her church last Friday. It was the first time that most of my cuts have seen the light of day. I had a pile that I wanted to take, just the ones I thought worthy ( and that wasn't many) but while I was at work my wife loaded up everything I had and set it up. I was blown away by what people had to say about things that I was ready to just pitch in the fire. And when people realize that it isn't laser cut, they get REALLY impressed.
  23. I was storing small pieces in an plastic bag that zips up (the kind that blankets sometimes come in) just because it was laying next to me when I decided I needed something to store smaller pieces in. I believe that bag got thrown away in the recent move because I haven't seen it, which is a shame because I had some decent sized pieces for future intarsia projects. I haven't thought about what to do with them in this new shop yet, probably the same thing, I'll grab a convenient box or something and start loading it up. I have been doing nothing but fret work since I moved so I haven't really had any scrap pieces to think about. Thanks for the thread as I could use a couple of better ideas myself.
  24. Definitely going to try this one. Thank Alex
