Basswood...Compound Cutting

Basswood: Basswood is an ideal wood for woodcarving.

I saw Rob's post on his compound cut reindeer and read the article about it.

Basswood is also great for 3D cutting,

All this reminded me that I have a 'fallen' Basswood tree in the woods.

I need to go check it out and see if it is worth sawing into lumber.

I want to do some more compound and want to make it as easy as possible.

What wood do you use for compound cutting?

I used everything in the scrap box, if I cannot cut bird houses or Christmas ornaments of the pieces in the scrap box, next place is the wood stove.

I'm with Pete, what ever I have laying around. I have cut mini birdhouses out of Maple, Birch, Cherry, Mahogany, Pine, Walnut, spruce, Red Oak, Alder and even Cocobolo, Redheart, Yellowheart and Puurpleheart, all without burning! The trick is applying clear packing tape to all sides of the blank and using the right blade. For these I use an FD Polar #5 or #7. The Polar blades have a slight set to the teeth that help clear the sawdust from the curf, which helps when cutting thick wood.
