Popular Post Frank Pellow Posted May 25, 2018 Popular Post Report Posted May 25, 2018 (edited) My wife, Margaret, and I will be leaving this afternoon for a visit to Finland and Norway. In Finland, we will be visiting a (3 generation) family of 7 people that we have known for many years. I designed and made a few bookmarks out of fir veneer to give them as a memento. The books are very thin (1.3 millimetres thick). Edited May 25, 2018 by Frank Pellow Dave Monk, Scrolling Steve, MTCowpoke22 and 10 others 13 Quote

don in brooklin on Posted May 27, 2018 Report Posted May 27, 2018 Look fantastic. Are these laminated or is the cross and maple leaf in laid? Did you buy the veneer or make it yourself? Have a great trip and let me know when you get back. Thanks Don. Quote

They are laminated from very thin (less than 1 millimetre thick) veneer that I purchased. The photos that follow show how I made these things: First I cut out 16 rectangles of the same size using a guillotine of the type that is used to cut paper: Cutting a single thickness of this material proved to be next to impossible, but a bundle of 8 wrapped with masking tape worked out well: Here are the 16 pieces of Fir veneer after the logos have been cut into 8 of them: I used one of the cut pieces as a template when painting the 8 background pieces with acrylic paint: After gluing the 8 foreground pieces to the 8 background pieces, I then bundled them together again with masking tape before rounding the corners with my scroll saw: Some light hand sanding followed by spraying with semi-gloss "rattle can" varnish completed the job. I can confirm that the bookmarks were very well received (and the folks that I gave them to were somewhat mystified as too how I was able to make them). wombatie 1 Quote
