JTTHECLOCKMAN Posted August 15, 2018 Report Posted August 15, 2018 I believe this is a good place to put this bit of advise being it has to do with business. Last week I got an email about my Domain names for my business and it said I need to take immediate action to renew one of my Domain names. A t first glance it looked exactly like the ones I normally get when the time comes from the place I purchased them. But it got me thinking because I went from a one year to a 3 year renewal plan and I thought I just did this last year. So last night I scrambled to find the receipt for my transaction and sure enough everything was in order. So I went back to this phony letter and looked closely and sure enough there were enough things to stand out as a scam but on first glance it looked so real I almost fell for it and sent money and that would have set things in motion for an ugly day. Just a heads up if this applies to you and your business. Jim Finn, Falcon and amazingkevin 3 Quote

meflick Posted August 15, 2018 Report Posted August 15, 2018 Thanks John for sharing this information. It is helpful when we let each other know of the latest scam attempts we encounter. I just wish these folks would learn to make an honest living! John B 1 Quote
Larry B Posted August 15, 2018 Report Posted August 15, 2018 (edited) Before retirement I managed an IT department for an electric utility. Talk about trying to not have employees fall for scams kept me up many a night (among many other security issues). Urgent domain name renewal notices were a common problem. Before I retired a new trick was the spoofing an internal email address looking like it came from the CEO or president to an accounting dept employee needing the latest payroll tax report or to electronically pay a bill ASAP. I really feel sorry for the regular computer user that doesn't deal with scams, tricks and security issues and how easily they can be duped into giving up personal information or falling for a scam. Really sucks. Larry Edited August 15, 2018 by Larry B crupiea 1 Quote
kmmcrafts Posted August 15, 2018 Report Posted August 15, 2018 Yeah, I've gotten a couple of those with my domain name.. A year or so ago they was calling your home and saying they are from the IRS and need your tax info as you are being audited.. Sort of thought it was weird.. but I never called back.. my wife was all ballistic about me not calling them back.. I said if they want me they know my address and many other ways of contacting me.. I'm not talking on the phone to someone I don't know.. This was shortly after just starting my business.. wife was mad because I wasn't worried about it.. I thought it was possibly a scam.. and then about 3 weeks later there was a thing on the news about it being a scam.. One time I can brag that I was right and she was wrong.. see ladies.. you are not always right, My wife isn't very computer savvy and there have been scam emails that without me watching or helping her online.. she probably would have been scammed a few times... she is learning a bit from me on these scammers and now she is getting to be quite cautious.. Had a friend years ago that fell for the old eBay scams where they want you to update your account password etc as your account may have been compromised and to do so in the link in the email... well he lost out on about $2000 over that deal.. Never do anything through the link in the email.. Quote
JTTHECLOCKMAN Posted August 15, 2018 Author Report Posted August 15, 2018 (edited) I see that one alot about ebay and just ignore. The one with the Domain is new to me and have to say it looks like the real thing. I probably should have seen and caught a few of the missing details but being something I had not seen it did not register. I stopped getting magazines for all the scamming going on with them and renewals. I refuse to do any banking or paying bills by computer. I worry when I order things by credit card and many places now accept PayPal which I have more confidence in. But for those rare occasions I have a throw away credit card which I will cancel at a moments notice and it has no affect on me. I use that for those times when I have to. If it is in the air it can be picked off. The world we live in. Edited August 15, 2018 by JTTHECLOCKMAN Quote
tgiro Posted August 15, 2018 Report Posted August 15, 2018 I got one a couple of weeks ago from "Microsoft Technical Support". I was able to string them along for about 25 minutes before they finally hung up on me. John B, RabidAlien, amazingkevin and 1 other 2 2 Quote

Next time you get a telemarketer call tell then you are the police investigating a murder at the number they called and ask who they are why they are calling, who they are calling etc etc.. and take their name, number, and say they may be cotacted for further questioning ... That'll give them all something to talk about at the communication center they work at.. maybe they'll lay off the calls for the rest of the day for others. Quote
new2woodwrk Posted August 16, 2018 Report Posted August 16, 2018 The prince of Nigeria just offered my one Million dollars, if I'd kindly send him a thousand right now. These scams are very popular and made to try to get you to move your domains to a new registrar. Be careful of everything you get as an email or snail mail these days - scams are cheaper by the dozen! amazingkevin 1 Quote

I heard a story of one of those getting routed to a true techie from a government agency and while he was on the phone stringing them out, he traced their IP address and locked down their computers in the whole call center. Some go through and leave a message no matter who answers. Sophisticated equipment grows. Edited April 14, 2019 by JTTHECLOCKMAN danny 1 Quote
